Azalea's Pov
I woke up with a bright smile spreading across my face, but it diminished immediately when I noticed that I was alone in bed. I can't deny that last night was memorable; I don't think he'd already be awake and in regret for his behaviour last night, left when he woke up.
He didn't have to run; this was his room, and he could have simply woken me up and sent me on my way. The thought bugged me as I left the room and closed it quietly before anyone saw me. This was my husband's room and it wouldn't be bad if anyone saw me coming out from his room, but I don't know for sure what they'd say and think in this house.
I wasn't so lucky because Danielle chose that moment to come up to his room for his morning medication, but when she saw me lingering by Dante's door, she rolled her eyes and went downstairs again. I do wonder why she doesn't want to have a face-to-face encounter with me. She avoids me by all means, and I do wish her boyfriend would do the same instead of always trying to confront me with a threat to back away.
A few minutes later, I was ready to leave the house and, turning down Emma's invitation to breakfast, I left for work.
The first step I took to ensure that Morris lost his grip on Dante's Empire was to sack every staff that he had employed. Those are his people, and they don't hide their hostility when they look at me, so everyone he interviewed and hired by himself has to go. With that vacancy, I created job opportunities for new recruits who would be interviewed and accepted by myself.
That is why I wasn't surprised when he barged into my office immediately when he came to work to shout at me. Totally unabashed, I picked up a file on my desk to rejoin a cordial meeting I put together to get to know the staff more. If anything, I'd need their cooperation and hard work to survive the next 24 days.
“You don't walk out on me when I am talking to you!” He grabbed my hand as I crossed him to the door.
“What would you do if I did? Push me against the wall? Strangle me?” I jerked my hand free and stared down my nose at him. “Maybe something new? I am not blind to all your treacherous intent on a family that loves and trusts you with their life! So don't you ever grab my hand like that or I'd make sure Dante has your head on a platter!” I walked out before he processed my words.
Did I just threaten Morris with a man who had abandoned me in bed after being so sweet last night? Does everyone know that he detests me? Well, his girlfriend had seen me come out of Dante's room this morning; he would have to believe my husband now favours me that much after a blissful night since she must've told him.
We were at the climax of the meeting when the peace in the company was interrupted by a sudden crash and scream. Everyone hurried out of the room, rushing to the entrance of the building where a man stood outside the main entrance with a bucket filled with stones of different sizes beside him. Real big rocks.
“You killed my son! Shut down this place! They killed my only son!” The man shouted, throwing a huge rock on the ad screen, and it came shattering above him.
I flinched, tightening my grasp on a document I held. I started to back away slowly as gory images of the past flipped through my mind.
He subconsciously moved back and watched the damage he was causing with satisfaction when the colourful lights hung loose over the entrance. It wasn't safe for him to be there, and I don't know what happened to make him so angry, but he had to move before it collapsed on him. The man seemed to be prepared for anything before he made the decision to attack the company.
“Step back!” A security guard barked at his team to not close in on the man and scare him into doing more harm to himself than just the building. “Listen to me, you need to stop doing that. It won't bring back your son.” He addressed the man in a kind voice.
“What do you know about my son to say such a thing? He was such a sweet boy and had not done anything to deserve death! He wasn't involved in anything bad, he had a simple life and only wanted to live it with his new wife! With me. Why?” The man said, picking up another rock from the bucket.
“All of you deserve to die!” He threw the stone and it penetrated the swinging glass doors.
“This belongs to my daughter! Just die!” She rose the silver award savagely and cut my neck.
A memory flashed into my mind, making me step back again as my hands wound protectively around my neck.
“Calm down, okay? Will you?” The head of security, David Macaulay, tried again.
Police cars arrived a few minutes later. The officers pushed through the now crowded scene to see what was happening by themselves. Some of the security men went over to explain the situation to them.
“If you come any closer to me, I will fucking spill your brains to the floor! Don't play such tricks on me!” The man replied when David started toward him.
“If you tell anyone about this, I will paint the wall red with your blood. Try me.”
Another memory was brought in by the scene, but a voice snapped me back to reality. Gina was talking to me about calling Morris to help out and calm the man down.
“Mr Mason, this is the police and we are your friends.” One of the police officers stepped forward, too, with a hand microphone so that the man would hear him amidst the chaos.
Now how does someone as inexperienced as myself handle such a situation? A chaotic one at that, which is obviously beyond the company's security chief and the cops. I can't bring Morris into this; for all I know, he might've plotted it to scare me away, and I wasn't about to give him the satisfaction.
“Where were you when my son was gunned down, my friends!” He said in a humourless tone. “Bring me back, my son, and the world will have peace, or I'll wreak havoc beyond the city and burn down this place! Nobody can stop me!”
I think it was time that someone put an end to this before it escalated beyond fixing. I started walking towards the door, just where the last stone he cast had landed. When he noticed this, he picked up a rock and started threatening to throw it at me if I didn't stop.
“Have you stopped to think what your son would have wanted you to do to handle this situation?” I lifted my hands to show that I was harmless as I continued walking forward.
“They say that boys learn from their fathers to become men. Is this something that your son would have wanted to learn from you, Mr Mason?”
Azalea's Pov “People say boys learn how to be men from their fathers. Would your son have wanted to learn from you, Mr. Mason?" I asked, my voice a bit louder than before. I was surprised by how easily the words came out despite my tension“Don't come closer! Don't talk about my son! You've no fuckin’ idea what you're saying!” He yelled, blindly throwing the huge rock he held. Anger surged through him like a wounded cat.Initially, I thought the rock was headed straight for me, but it struck the remnants of the ad screen hanging above the entrance. The impact caused the screen to crack even further, its supporting wire straining dangerously as it tilted unsteadily just inches from where he stood.Panicked, he turned to run, but his legs clipped together, sending him tumbling to the ground. The advertisement screen came crashing down beside him, arousing a collective gasp from the crowd. Reporters rushed toward the scene, their cameras flashing and shutters clicking furiously from eve

DANTE'S POV “Let me go!” I thought I heard those words as my eyes fluttered open. My eyes did a quick scan of my room before my mind started working to remember what had led to this moment. The reason why Azalea was in my room, her head bent over an armchair, her mouth slightly opened so that she snored softly, drooling. There's nothing attractive about this woman, but she still looks beautiful and smart in her sleep. I would never admit that out loud because it'd sound so ridiculous coming from me. But she's…“No, Mama! No!” She suddenly jerked upward, then started kicking and throwing punches to the air as she continued screaming. “Let me go! Please!”It was her. It was her cries that had woken me up. I pushed myself up from my bed and pinned her down to the chair. I dodged a blow twice before my hands caught hers and pulled her to me. She fought for a while before she woke up, panting and pushing herself against me as if she were trying to escape from a monster. If only she knew
Azalea’s Pov What was I expecting from Dante? Maybe a big hug and kisses on my cheeks when the whole family barely knows me. They are all already blinded by Morris’s facade that they would never find fault in anything he did. Now I know better than to disclose everything I know to any member of the family, they might tell him about my suspicions and aid him in his plans to ruin me along with them. He's that evil and I will make them see him for who he is.Common sense told me to run far away from men like Dante, but the more I tried, the deeper thoughts of him registered in my mind. Was I expecting some kindness from such a man? Which man wakes up to find himself already married to some strange woman? If I should throw blame, it would be at my father who signed me off without second thoughts. And Leo, who is having the time of his life with Zara.I had no time to think about all of those as they swam through my head and made me drift from the task at hand many times, but I spent late
Dante's Pov I was sleeping and yet awake in my mind. I was being thrown into a pool full of water and strong hands were pushing my head deep into the water so that no matter how I fought to the surface, I sank deeper and choked on a large amount of water whenever I tried to scream. I was stronger than that, and I was struggling, but I still felt so weak and destabilized, maybe drugged so that my body felt limbless. Suddenly, the hand slipped, and I seized the opportunity to swiftly jerk off and surface before those merciless hands captured me again. I coughed and sprang up with a start to see two pairs of green eyes staring at me, almost popping out of their sockets from fear. Phyna, Larissa’s thirteen-year-old daughter, stood beside my bed, hugging her favourite teddy bear to her chest. Both hands protectively wrapped around it as if she was protecting it from a ghost she saw.One of my haunting nightmares since I woke up or sleep paralysis, whatever that was, felt surreal.“Hey,
Azalea’s Pov I stared at the tall building that is Dante's Empire and the advert playing out before my eyes in front of the building. When the driver opened the door, I took deep breaths before stepping down from the car and taking cautious steps forward.“Welcome to Dante's Empire ma'am. I am Gina Taylor, your personal assistant.” A lady about the same age as myself greeted me as I walked into the swinging glass doors. Our eyes met briefly and she smiled genuinely at me.“Thank you, Gina.” I returned her smile coolly and let her take my handbag while I finally found the courage to look up as she led me to the receptionist’s desk first.“I have your schedule ready and it's going to be a long day, but I can assure you that everyone here is very cooperative and friendly. You just have to trust the process and be yourself, especially when you have your first meeting with the board members by 10.” She went on explaining everything and introducing some of the employees to me. It wasn't a
Azalea’s Pov“Who the hell are you?” His forehead folded in angry frustration. While he moved towards me, my eyes weighed the options between making it to the door before he reached me or screaming. Unfortunately for him, his hand, which was still entangled with the IV wires, dragged the infusion pole forward and knocked the wheels off the floor. He wasn't fast enough as he tried to catch it, so it landed on the man's face and his eyes shot open.“Mrs Dante?” Gerald's voice called from the entrance of the door before he walked in. At the same time, the man rose from the bed and fixated his intimidating eyes on me.His orbs were a greenish shade of brown, but there was something very unusual about them that made me forget the situation I was in for a moment to focus solely on them even when they darkened and his forehead wrinkled.“Mr Dante! Holy moly!” Gerald's voice echoed in my head as he rushed to the bed to assist the man up.“Uncle Dan!” I whipped my head around in time to see a
AZALEA’S POVI wanted to scream! But then, I could only lift doubtful and sad eyes to my father, hoping that I still had time to spare, but he disappointed me with a disapproving frown.“You heard right. Go with him, Azea. Be a good wife.” My father proved to me that I was no longer needed.Hot tears formed in my eyes as visions of the past flipped through them. I remembered Leo's infidelity with my step-sister and made a quick decision to do exactly what I was told because there was no place for me in my father's house.I'm alone in this cruel world and the only person I have who can't betray me is myself. The earlier I understood that the better for me.With that one point, I made up my mind. I sniffed my tears back, dabbed my face with the back of my palm, slanted one last disdainful glance at Morgan Peyton, then turned to meet the grey-suit-man’s gaze with a quizzical frown. As if he could read my mind, his eyes lit up in understanding. He told me that I need not worry about anyth
AZALEA’S POV “You will marry him.” Helen’s sharp voice cut through my heart like a double-edged sword.I looked up at my father who was sitting beside her, eating as if his wife didn't just drop a bomb. The fact that he was sitting at ease, not bothered by Helen's declaration wasn't even a surprise, but it made my heart ache. Why can't she marry off her own daughter if she was desperately in need of money? After all, it was her obsession with money and her extravagant way of spending that has rendered my father's business useless and now the company is at the brink of bankruptcy. I had a lot to say and a lot of questions to ask, but all of them rested on the tip of my tongue until I washed them down with a glass of juice. “That man has been bedridden for three years. Nobody knows if he'd wake up. If Azalea marries him, she's as good as a widow!” Lionel, my stepbrother, interceded. For a brief moment, the clank of cutleries against plates ceased, and an agonizing silence issued befo
