DANTE'S POV

“Let me go!”

I thought I heard those words as my eyes fluttered open. My eyes did a quick scan of my room before my mind started working to remember what had led to this moment. The reason why Azalea was in my room, her head bent over an armchair, her mouth slightly opened so that she snored softly, drooling.

There's nothing attractive about this woman, but she still looks beautiful and smart in her sleep. I would never admit that out loud because it'd sound so ridiculous coming from me. But she's…

“No, Mama! No!” She suddenly jerked upward, then started kicking and throwing punches to the air as she continued screaming. “Let me go! Please!”

It was her. It was her cries that had woken me up. I pushed myself up from my bed and pinned her down to the chair. I dodged a blow twice before my hands caught hers and pulled her to me. She fought for a while before she woke up, panting and pushing herself against me as if she were trying to escape from a monster.

If only she knew what I had done. If only she had any idea who I truly am, that I am worse than a monster, she'd be running away from me and go hide behind the monster for safety.

“It's okay, you're safe now,” I whispered to her, wondering why I suddenly cared if she was safe or not.

As if my voice reminded her of who she was leaning into, she pushed herself backwards in the chair and stood up. I sank back into my bed and watched her shuddering features.

“I…I shouldn't be here. Sorry. I'll ta–ke… I'm leaving!” She turned quickly to hurry out of the room.

“Wait!” A word from me was all it took to make her freeze. “Stay,” I grumbled, surprising myself as well as her.

“It is already late in the night, I don't want you to disturb anyone with your clumsiness.” I cleared my throat and moved to the side of the bed to give her room. She's my wife, after all; sharing my bed wouldn't kill me, although it'd bruise my ego.

I didn't look to know if she was going to stay or leave, I was battling with my thoughts, pondering about a good reason why I told her to stay now when I almost scared her out when she was assisting me earlier. I feel better after sleeping soundly for the first time since I came out of a coma without being haunted by gruelling nightmares. But I woke up to see that I wasn't the only one who had trouble sleeping at night.

When I heard light footsteps, I waited to hear the door open and close before I laid down properly in bed, so I was caught totally off guard when her weight took over the empty side of the bed. She lay so stiff and gripped the duvet when I glanced at her, I did wonder if she was breathing at all.

“Relax. I don't have fangs.” I broke into a wry smile.

“I'm so–sorry.” She stammered, her voice hitching up as her exhales came out puffed and short.

“Take a deep breath.” I sat up and placed a hand on her forehead. She shivered, then obeyed. “Exhale. Close your eyes and think of happy moments, with friends, family, colleagues or a childhood memory.” I tried a trick that Preacher, my father's old guard, had used to help me when I was younger. He died many years ago before I hired Gerald as my driver-slash-assistant.

“I don't have such a memory.” She sprang up, pushing the duvet aside as she started inhaling and exhaling quickly.

She tried to stand as she clutched her chest. It was obvious that it was difficult for her to breathe, and she was about to run away from me so that I wouldn't see another of her weaknesses. Seeing all of that in one night made me feel guilty for all the times I had been so harsh on her. How hurt she must've felt knowing that I was using her horrific experience against her. I had no idea she was going through all that pain, worse than I have been.

Panic attack? Claustrophobia? Whatever it was that gripped her after such long hours of restless sleep, I can't make her talk about any of that now. Hatred. Distrust. Anger. Those are feelings we have in common toward each other. She didn't have to say it; her fright and attempted flight had exposed it all.

“Let me give you a good memory then.” I caught her arm before she could leave my bed and pulled her into my lap, then let her digest the notion as I stared into her eyes.

“What…” she inhaled, swallowing hard, “are you…” she exhaled sharply and her eyes widened in realization.

I placed my lips on hers, then waited for her to give in and surrender before probing her lips until they parted for my tongue to glide in. Slowly, she began to respond and kiss back as if she had been hungry for it. The irritating sound her nose made while she tried to breathe properly, was gone. Soon, her arms went around my neck and she leaned closer until her soft breasts pressed against my rocky chest.

“Is that a good enough memory?” I whispered, breaking the kiss and pressing my forehead to hers just to resist the urge to go beyond kissing and explore the rest of her body.

She sat still, but with a single sigh, her breath returned to normal and relaxed even more in my arms. She only looked shaken up by surprise at my attitude, and the only fear I could feel when she avoided meeting my gaze was the change that would come in the morning when my sanity would return.

I tucked her in bed and lay quietly beside her when she fell asleep in my arms. I woke up the next morning and left her still soundly sleeping. I quickly changed into my running shorts, polo and shoes after slipping out of bed, then sneaked out of the house so that nobody would see me leave except the two security guards on duty that morning.

That's why I was surprised when I noticed someone following me while I jogged across the street. It was still very early, but it wasn't dark, so I caught sight of a man in black clothes and red shoes, blue rubber gloves and a hooded jacket which hid his face as he ducked behind a store.

I didn't leave the house with anything, not even my phone, except for the pill box that Dani had prescribed for me.

I picked up pace…

Azalea's Pov “People say boys learn how to be men from their fathers. Would your son have wanted to learn from you, Mr. Mason?" I asked, my voice a bit louder than before. I was surprised by how easily the words came out despite my tension“Don't come closer! Don't talk about my son! You've no fuckin’ idea what you're saying!” He yelled, blindly throwing the huge rock he held. Anger surged through him like a wounded cat.Initially, I thought the rock was headed straight for me, but it struck the remnants of the ad screen hanging above the entrance. The impact caused the screen to crack even further, its supporting wire straining dangerously as it tilted unsteadily just inches from where he stood.Panicked, he turned to run, but his legs clipped together, sending him tumbling to the ground. The advertisement screen came crashing down beside him, arousing a collective gasp from the crowd. Reporters rushed toward the scene, their cameras flashing and shutters clicking furiously from eve

Azalea's Pov I woke up with a bright smile spreading across my face, but it diminished immediately when I noticed that I was alone in bed. I can't deny that last night was memorable; I don't think he'd already be awake and in regret for his behaviour last night, left when he woke up.He didn't have to run; this was his room, and he could have simply woken me up and sent me on my way. The thought bugged me as I left the room and closed it quietly before anyone saw me. This was my husband's room and it wouldn't be bad if anyone saw me coming out from his room, but I don't know for sure what they'd say and think in this house.I wasn't so lucky because Danielle chose that moment to come up to his room for his morning medication, but when she saw me lingering by Dante's door, she rolled her eyes and went downstairs again. I do wonder why she doesn't want to have a face-to-face encounter with me. She avoids me by all means, and I do wish her boyfriend would do the same instead of always t

Azalea’s Pov What was I expecting from Dante? Maybe a big hug and kisses on my cheeks when the whole family barely knows me. They are all already blinded by Morris’s facade that they would never find fault in anything he did. Now I know better than to disclose everything I know to any member of the family, they might tell him about my suspicions and aid him in his plans to ruin me along with them. He's that evil and I will make them see him for who he is.Common sense told me to run far away from men like Dante, but the more I tried, the deeper thoughts of him registered in my mind. Was I expecting some kindness from such a man? Which man wakes up to find himself already married to some strange woman? If I should throw blame, it would be at my father who signed me off without second thoughts. And Leo, who is having the time of his life with Zara.I had no time to think about all of those as they swam through my head and made me drift from the task at hand many times, but I spent late

Dante's Pov I was sleeping and yet awake in my mind. I was being thrown into a pool full of water and strong hands were pushing my head deep into the water so that no matter how I fought to the surface, I sank deeper and choked on a large amount of water whenever I tried to scream. I was stronger than that, and I was struggling, but I still felt so weak and destabilized, maybe drugged so that my body felt limbless. Suddenly, the hand slipped, and I seized the opportunity to swiftly jerk off and surface before those merciless hands captured me again. I coughed and sprang up with a start to see two pairs of green eyes staring at me, almost popping out of their sockets from fear. Phyna, Larissa’s thirteen-year-old daughter, stood beside my bed, hugging her favourite teddy bear to her chest. Both hands protectively wrapped around it as if she was protecting it from a ghost she saw.One of my haunting nightmares since I woke up or sleep paralysis, whatever that was, felt surreal.“Hey,

  • The CEO's Unwanted Obsession    Chapter 4: Drowning Empire

Azalea’s Pov I stared at the tall building that is Dante's Empire and the advert playing out before my eyes in front of the building. When the driver opened the door, I took deep breaths before stepping down from the car and taking cautious steps forward.“Welcome to Dante's Empire ma'am. I am Gina Taylor, your personal assistant.” A lady about the same age as myself greeted me as I walked into the swinging glass doors. Our eyes met briefly and she smiled genuinely at me.“Thank you, Gina.” I returned her smile coolly and let her take my handbag while I finally found the courage to look up as she led me to the receptionist’s desk first.“I have your schedule ready and it's going to be a long day, but I can assure you that everyone here is very cooperative and friendly. You just have to trust the process and be yourself, especially when you have your first meeting with the board members by 10.” She went on explaining everything and introducing some of the employees to me. It wasn't a

Azalea’s Pov“Who the hell are you?” His forehead folded in angry frustration. While he moved towards me, my eyes weighed the options between making it to the door before he reached me or screaming. Unfortunately for him, his hand, which was still entangled with the IV wires, dragged the infusion pole forward and knocked the wheels off the floor. He wasn't fast enough as he tried to catch it, so it landed on the man's face and his eyes shot open.“Mrs Dante?” Gerald's voice called from the entrance of the door before he walked in. At the same time, the man rose from the bed and fixated his intimidating eyes on me.His orbs were a greenish shade of brown, but there was something very unusual about them that made me forget the situation I was in for a moment to focus solely on them even when they darkened and his forehead wrinkled.“Mr Dante! Holy moly!” Gerald's voice echoed in my head as he rushed to the bed to assist the man up.“Uncle Dan!” I whipped my head around in time to see a

AZALEA’S POVI wanted to scream! But then, I could only lift doubtful and sad eyes to my father, hoping that I still had time to spare, but he disappointed me with a disapproving frown.“You heard right. Go with him, Azea. Be a good wife.” My father proved to me that I was no longer needed.Hot tears formed in my eyes as visions of the past flipped through them. I remembered Leo's infidelity with my step-sister and made a quick decision to do exactly what I was told because there was no place for me in my father's house.I'm alone in this cruel world and the only person I have who can't betray me is myself. The earlier I understood that the better for me.With that one point, I made up my mind. I sniffed my tears back, dabbed my face with the back of my palm, slanted one last disdainful glance at Morgan Peyton, then turned to meet the grey-suit-man’s gaze with a quizzical frown. As if he could read my mind, his eyes lit up in understanding. He told me that I need not worry about anyth

AZALEA’S POV “You will marry him.” Helen’s sharp voice cut through my heart like a double-edged sword.I looked up at my father who was sitting beside her, eating as if his wife didn't just drop a bomb. The fact that he was sitting at ease, not bothered by Helen's declaration wasn't even a surprise, but it made my heart ache. Why can't she marry off her own daughter if she was desperately in need of money? After all, it was her obsession with money and her extravagant way of spending that has rendered my father's business useless and now the company is at the brink of bankruptcy. I had a lot to say and a lot of questions to ask, but all of them rested on the tip of my tongue until I washed them down with a glass of juice. “That man has been bedridden for three years. Nobody knows if he'd wake up. If Azalea marries him, she's as good as a widow!” Lionel, my stepbrother, interceded. For a brief moment, the clank of cutleries against plates ceased, and an agonizing silence issued befo
