“Who’s there?”

The sharp voice cut through the stillness of dawn.

Marcelline froze in the dimly lit corridor, her hand resting on the brass doorknob of the study. She hadn’t expected anyone to be awake this early, not even the servants. Her heart thudded once, but her expression never faltered.

“It’s me,” she said calmly, stepping into the light.

The butler, startled, bowed quickly. “Madam… forgive me. I thought...”

“That I was a shadow?” Her lips curved faintly, though her eyes remained unreadable. “Perhaps I am.”

The old man lowered his head, uneasy, and hurried past. Marcelline lingered for a moment, her gaze sliding to the half-open door of the study. Inside, the glow of a desk lamp revealed neat stacks of documents, pens aligned with military precision, Rowan’s habits, untouched since last night. She closed the door quietly and moved on.

The Adair mansion was stirring awake. Light crept through tall windows draped in velvet, gilding marble floors and silver banisters. Servants moved briskly through the halls, their voices hushed but sharp enough to carry.

“…pitiful, isn’t she?”

“Clinging on for nine years when everyone knows Mr. Adair’s real love is Miss Selene…”

“Does she not see? Or does she enjoy the humiliation?”

Marcelline’s steps didn’t falter. She moved with the same grace she always did, head high, expression serene. But in her palm, the faintest crinkle of paper betrayed her secret, the envelope she carried tucked inside her sleeve.

By the time she entered the kitchen, the whispers had already shifted into silence.

She ignored them. Tying her apron neatly, she rolled up the sleeves of her pale blue house dress and began preparing breakfast. The servants exchanged wary glances. Most mistresses of the house commanded meals to be served; Marcelline cooked them herself.

Eggs, toast, coffee, every detail precisely as Rowan liked it. Every gesture practiced over nine years of habit. Her hands were steady. Her movements, precise. To an onlooker, she was a woman devoted to her husband’s comfort.

But today, her silence was not submission.

Today, it was calculation.

The sound of polished leather against marble echoed before she even looked up.

Rowan Adair appeared in the kitchen doorway, tall and commanding, his tailored black suit sharp against the soft light of morning. His storm-blue eyes were unreadable, cold as steel, and his expression carried the quiet authority of a man used to being obeyed without question.

He paused when he saw her at the counter, then moved past as though she were another servant.

“Coffee,” he said. Not a greeting, not a request.

Marcelline poured it wordlessly, setting the cup in front of him at the breakfast table. He never glanced at her, already buried in the morning’s financial reports spread across his tablet.

To him, she wasn’t wife, companion, or partner. She was a fixture. A shadow.

He lifted the cup, sipped once, and set it down again. “Too sweet.”

Her lips curved faintly. “I followed the usual measure.”

“Then change it.” His eyes never left the screen.

Marcelline inclined her head, turning back to the counter. Behind them, the servants exchanged furtive glances. To them, this scene was ordinary. To them, Mrs. Adair was pitiable, forever chasing the crumbs of her husband’s attention.

One maid leaned toward another, whispering, “He won’t even look at her. Not when Miss Selene...”

The sentence died as Marcelline glanced over her shoulder. Not a word was spoken, but the sharpness in her gray eyes silenced the room.

She turned back to the counter, stirring a fresh cup of coffee, sliding it across the table without a sound. Rowan finally glanced at her then, only briefly, before returning to his tablet.

“Selene called,” he said absently. “We'll be attending a gala in fews days time. You don’t need to attend.”

A familiar ache pressed at Marcelline’s chest, but outwardly she only smoothed her apron. “As you wish.”

It was always like this. He paraded Selene before the world as though she were the one by his side, while his legal wife remained in the shadows of the mansion. Nine years of this humiliation, endured without protest.

Nine years, because of a promise.

Nine years, because she had a plan.

Rowan’s phone buzzed. He glanced at it, lips curving faintly in a smile he never gave his wife. Without a word, he rose, slipping his jacket on.

“Breakfast is ready,” Marcelline said softly.

“I have no time.” His tone was final. He strode past her, leaving the smell of his cologne in the air, leaving the chair at the table empty, leaving her exactly as he always did, alone in the silence of a house that was never her home.

The servants scattered once he was gone, their whispers resuming as soon as they thought she couldn’t hear.

“She still smiles, even when he treats her like air…”

“How can she endure it? If it were me...”

“She has nowhere else to go. Miss Selene will take her place soon enough.”

Marcelline untied her apron, folding it neatly on the counter. Her movements were calm, deliberate, but her fingers tightened around the envelope hidden in her sleeve.

She turned her gaze toward the wide windows of the dining room, where sunlight spilled across the polished table Rowan had abandoned.

Nine years.

Her lips curved again, faint and cool, as she whispered into the empty room, “It ends today.”

She slipped the envelope into her pocket.

It was Lucien. Considering the way she was dragging his clothes, he couldn't risk going back naked so he had to follow her inside.Once in, she closed the door flashing him a creepy smile. He had planned to annoy the hell out of her but that planned seemed as if he was digging his grave.“I don't want to know why you're here, but you're here at the right time. Come with me. Breakfast is served.” Marcelline said leading him to the dinning.“Sit tight. I'll be right back.” She said and dashed inside the kitchen, reappearing minutes later with a plate of what seemed like a burnt offering.“Eat.” she encouraged. He stared at the plate before him, they were giving “This was once a Cookie ” vibe. Marcelline woke to morning light streaming through her expensive curtains, the kind that filtered sunlight into a soft golden glow that interior designers charged fortunes to achieve. Her eyes snapped open, and panic flooded her system. She was late. Her internal clock screamed at her that she should have been up an hour ago. She threw off the covers and swung her legs out of bed, already mentally running through her morning routine, calculating how long it would take to shower, dress, review the morning reports—Then it clicked.Saturday.It was Saturday. A weekend. No office. No meetings. No quarterly reports demanding her attention or board members questioning her decisions or Damien plotting her downfall.Just... nothing.Marcelline sank back onto the bed, the adrenaline draining away and leaving confusion in its wake. What was she supposed to do with a Saturday? Her life had been so consumed by work—first as Rowan's wife managing his household and social calendar, then as CEO man

Her father watched her closely. “Then prove it,” he said. The dinner had begun. And Marcelline realized something with startling clarity— This table wasn’t testing her.It was remembering her.And tonight, she would remind it exactly who she had become. For exactly three bites, they maintained the illusion of a normal dinner. Then the first strike came—not from Alexander, but from one of the board members."Miss Odette," Gerald Hutchinson began, clearing his throat in that particular way people did when they were about to say something unpleasant, "there have been... concerns."Marcelline didn't look surprised. She dabbed her lips calmly with her napkin, set it back in her lap with deliberate care. "Concerns are expected in any leadership transition. Go on."Gerald glanced at Alexander before continuing, seeking permission or perhaps reassurance. "The company has faced public scrutiny recently. Leadership optics, investor confidence, market perception—"Damien cut in smoothly, his voi

  • The CEO's ex-wife is Untouchable    Chapter 51: The Family Dinner

Marcelline stood in her penthouse at 8:30 PM, staring at her reflection with the kind of dread usually reserved for executions. She'd spent the entire afternoon contemplating not going. Had drafted a dozen different text messages to Lucien explaining why she couldn't make it, why a family dinner after thirteen years of silence was too much, too soon, too complicated.Had deleted every single one.Because the truth was simple and infuriating: if she didn't show up tonight, she'd spend every moment wondering what had been said in her absence. What decisions had been made about her future. Whether her position as CEO had been quietly dismantled while she hid in her penthouse like a coward. The Odettes didn't forgive absence. They remembered it. Used it. Weaponized it.So she'd go. She'd sit through whatever performance her father had orchestrated. And she'd face her family with the same composure she brought to boardrooms full of hostile investors.Even if it killed her.The dress she'd

"Marcelline," Lucien said again, taking a step further into her office like he had every right to be there. "It's been a while."The understatement of the century.A thousand questions crashed through her mind at once, each one fighting for dominance. Why now? Why after nine years of silence? Where were you when I got divorced? Where were you during those nine years of marriage when I was completely alone? But what came out was something else entirely. "What are you doing here?"His mouth curved, not quite a smile. “I was hoping to surprise you.”That did it.The word surprise echoed somewhere deep in her memory, attached to a time she didn’t like to revisit. A time when she’d been smaller, quieter, less certain of her footing.“Oh. I'm surprised.” She said sarcasm dripping in her voice. “Get. Out.”Lucien's lips curved into something that might have been a smile on someone less guarded. "Is that any way to greet your brother?""Brother," she repeated, the word tasting bitter. "You lo

  • The CEO's ex-wife is Untouchable    Chapter 49: The Brothers Return

Marcelline woke before her alarm rung, her body still tense from yesterday's grocery store incident. The black sedan. The deliberate following. The creeping certainty that someone was watching her. She'd barely slept, jumping at every sound, checking the locks three times before finally collapsing into bed around 2 AM. Her dreams had been fragmented, anxious—Rowan's face, Selene's venom, that car trailing her through the city streets. But morning brought clarity, or at least the illusion of it.Work. That's what she needed. Structure. Purpose. Something to focus on that wasn't the catastrophic mess her personal life had become. She pushed herself out of bed. The shower was brisk. Efficient.Marcelline stood in her closet, selecting her armor for the day—a tailored navy suit that screamed CEO, paired with heels sharp enough to be weapons. She pulled her hair back into a sleek bun leaving a few chosen strands loose to fall over her eyes, softening her gaze and giving her look a quiet, i
