The Moretti mansion was too quiet that morning, not the peaceful kind of silencebut the kind that felt heavy, like something important was missing. The sunlight got in through the large windows but it didn’t warm the house. In the kitchen, Emilia sat at the counter drawing quietly with a pink crayon, her small hands moved slowly and her tongue stuck out the way it always did when she focused but this time, her picture wasn’t of a castle or a princess or her favorite stuffed cat.It was of a house broken down the middle one side had two people holding hands the other side had only one.Vivianna stood by the stovestirring a pot of oatmeal even though she knew Emilia probably wouldn’t eat it , she watched her daughter from the corner of her eye, her chest tightened“Sweetheart” she said gently “do you want anything with your oatmeal?”Emilia shook her head, no.“When is Papa coming home?” she asked not looking up from her drawing.Vivianna hesitated. “Soon” she said forcing a smile.

She stared at the name flashing across the screen; Sant'Elena Private Hospital and felt the air still around her.She answered on the third ring, already holding her breath"Hello?"The voice on the other end was polite, too distant to carry bad news softlyMoretti Enterprises had officially withdrawn funding, there was no appeal, no reconsideration. Her mother would be allowed to continue treatment for one more month, no more. After that, unless full payment was made, she would be discharged.Rosalie didn’t cry, she didn’t shout. Walked past me and sat down on the edge of the bed like it was his“Do you even realize what you did?” I asked, heart pounding. His eyes met mine bloodshot but something raw inside them“You don’t understand" he muttered “I didn’t mean to-”“Mean to what? The silence inside his suite was not peaceful, it was heavyThicker than the smoke from the half lit cigar he’d abandoned in the ashtray.Thicker than the burn in his throat from the brandy he poured too quickly And it only grew heavier each minute. The room was dim, lit only by a single lamp. Alessandro sat slouched in the leather chair, sleeves rolled up, collar open, a drink cradled in one hand, his phone in the otherBut he wasn’t reading anything. He was staring at her name; Rosalie Biancostill sitting in his inbox next to the email she hadn’t sent yet. He knew it. He could feel it. If she hadn’t resigned already, she was about to.He looked away. The vision of her face how it crumbled under the weight of his voice hadn’t left him since the moment the words escaped his mouth."You should go, you clearly don’t belong here."He flinched just thinking about itThat hadn’t been about the glass. Not really. That had been about Paolo. About the way the man smiled at her

I stood by the window, the city of Rome sprawled out beneath me like a glittering secretI could still feel his eyes on me, even hours laterAt the dinner, Alessandro hadn’t said much.not with words at least. But his gaze lingered, burned even, every time I laughed too long at someone else’s joke, every time my hand brushed a champagne glass or I tilted my head in conversationHe never touched me, not once, but it felt like he was always watching, always calculating I slipped off my heels and walked barefoot across the plush carpet. My dress lay crumpled on the armchair where I’d tossed it earlier. I stared at it for a long time, it wasn’t just fabric, It was a symbol now of the person I was pretending to be. I crawled under the blanket and pulled it up to my chin, trying to will myself to sleep but the silence kept humming back memories. The way Alessandro had barely said a word on the ride back to the hote
