Achievement

Achievement: A thing done successfully with effort, skill and courage.

Amara’s POV

“With deep regrets and sad heart, I solemnly announce the departure of my chance at ever getting a job at the Salvatore enterprises. I’m doomed Miykal” I cried out to my best friend, holding her tight, pretending there were real tears in my eyes.

“What happened, Mara?” Miykal asked

I had called her immediately after the interview to meet up and she told me to meet her at the school campus.

“A lot happened. But still, I think I’ve failed woefully” I cried out once more.

“Explain to me better, how did it happen?” She asked worriedly.

Miykal knew just how much I’d put into coming all the way from New York to California to pursue this job. I’d left everything behind to make things better for myself but she also didn’t know the biggest reason why I made such a huge move was to see him one more time.

Though I don’t regret my decision of seeing him again but I do regret my fucking decision of bringing that fucked up car of mine at that ridiculous amount of money.

“Talk to me, girl”

We were currently sitting in their school cafeteria with two bottles of soda and a plate of hamburger sitting pretty on the table. I looked around to see a massive number of student trolling in and out of the cafeteria. I wish I was able to go to college too and experience what is like to be a student but for now, I need to focus on how to make enough cash so as not to die from hunger.

Okay breathe Amara!, you’ve got this.

I felt Miykal hand on mine, holding it tight, urging me to speak.

“Was the interviewer evil?” She asked.

“No, I’m the dumb one. Maybe not finishing school really did a number

on me” I lamented.

“Don’t you ever say something that stupid, Amara. You have a degree girl. Something I can’t even attain in months

to come. I know you’ll be fine”

“Well! Fuck the job. I’ll start looking for some places to start working tonight” I said in good faith.

“Like where and where? I can call some of my friends to see if anyone can help with anything” She picked up her phone, maybe to make a call or send messages to some of her rich friends.

“Ask if there’s any vacancy in a strip club. I heard their pays are usually high especially if I’m placed behind a pole” Miykal dropped her phone loudly on the table and huffed.

“I don’t know how you always manage to make a joke out of every situation but this ain’t funny, Mara”

“I’m not joking. You think if I have the chance to work in a strip club right now that I won’t. Impossible baby. I’m fucking penniless, the next beggar you see down the street is fucking richer than me right now. I have to pay for the food, we’re still splitting some of the bills, and lots more. All I need is just something that pays better” I dropped the bottle of soda on the table and placed my hand under my chin.

“I won’t let you go to that extent. Let’s have a good faith concerning the interview, it might turn out good. If it doesn’t work out, I can lend you some cash” She suggested

“No, Miykal. Thanks but no. I’ll fix things myself”

She was about to say something when a lanky guy walked up to us with a huge smile on his face, staring at my direction.

Okay brother, hold your horses.

“Hey Mikky,” He said, waving at Miykal.

Mikky! Where is this guy from? The 18th century?. That’s a total turn off, sweetie.

I looked at Miykal to see that she was blushing. Oh no! This guy might look good and handsome but I thought Miykal’s taste in men exceeded country side bumpkins.

“Hey Benjamin. I didn’t know you had a class today” He walked towards us and hugged Miykal.

“I just had to come in to submit an assignment. This is your friend, Amara, right?”

No, this is Sophia the first!

“Hi, I’m Benjamin, we met at the club the other night, you remember me, right?” He asked.

“Ahh, not really. I’m not that good with faces because I don’t remember people that well. It’s nice seeing you again Benjamin. But I have to go now which means I’ll see you later” I stood up and gathered all of my stuff that I’d placed on the table.

“I’ll see you at home later, Miykal”

“Take care girl” She still hadn’t stopped blushing and I promised myself to grill her ass till she’s smooth once she gets back home tonight.

*******************************************************

The loud thunder that followed the lightning bolt made me scramble up to my feet. Scared, I walked out of my room with my blanket to go sit in the living room and wait for Miykal to get back.

I couldn’t afford staying in the house without her or anyone to keep me in check. My PTSD might kick in and I’ll be too scared to even open my eyes as I don’t want to recollect the memories of that night.

Picking up my phone, I dialed Miykal, only for her not to pick up but later sent me a text that she was stuck in traffic and might get home late.

The second loud thunder sent me up my feet and before I could do anything, the lights went off.

Suddenly, I was back on Trenton’s street, alone and drenched in the rain. I heard footsteps behind me. I was running but the footsteps kept on getting closer, so I screamed, screamed for my life. Few minutes after I had stopped screaming and being scared, I had to force myself to get back to my senses and I hid in a corner of the room.

I kept telling myself to breathe. The psychologist had told me it would help if I kept on reminding myself that it was just a memory, that I’m fine right now and that nothing was wrong anymore.

Tears streamed down my face as I recollected the memory of how I lost my family till I started dozing off unknowingly.

Light streamed in through the curtains of the room and I opened my eyes at the intrusion. I realized I was still in the same corner I had subjected myself too and that it was a brand new day. I looked around searching for my ringing phone and once I saw it, a message was waiting for me.

Congratulations, Amara Collins. You passed the interview and the company would like to offer you a job as a personal assistant to our CEO, all the necessary details would be sent to your email. We hope you’re able to resume to work on Monday, best of luck”

This time, I couldn’t scream, tears were rolling down my face as I was speechless.

I guess I didn’t waste the money I used to bring down that car after all.
