Minerva

The phone rang right as I was shoving my notes into my bag, already giving up on internship because no team wanted to hire a low class intern. I almost ignored it but something made me pick up. “Hello?”

“Minerva Brooks? This is Coach Reynolds from the New York Pros. Congratulations. You’ve been selected for the sports medicine internship starting next week.”

I stood there frozen for half a second then let out this squeal that probably scared my neighbors. “Wait are you serious? Me? Like actually me?”

Sophia jumped up from the couch so fast her soda nearly spilled. She grabbed my arms and we started hopping around the tiny living room like idiots. “You did it Min! After all that crap you finally got in with the Pros!”

I was laughing so hard my cheeks hurt. This was my fourth year and the first three had been a total mess because I spent way too much time on the field cheering for Liam when he got nervous before games. I specialized in taking care of athletes and yeah I picked hockey because of him. He always said my support made the difference. Now here I was getting this huge break.

Sophia hugged me tight still bouncing. “Tell me everything. What did they say exactly?”

“They just said my application stood out and they want me there next week. I can’t believe it Soph. I applied to so many teams and most of them turned me down flat because my experience was all tied to one guy. But the Pros actually took me.”

We collapsed onto the couch still giggling. Sophia wiped her eyes. “This calls for a celebration. But wait isn’t today Liam’s birthday? I thought you told him you couldn’t hang out.”

I grinned and felt my face get warm. “Yeah I lied on purpose. I wanted to surprise him big time. I planned on showing up with his favorite takeout and then giving him the time of his life tonight if you know what I mean. It’s been way too long since we did anything like that. I was so busy hunting for a team that would actually take me I barely saw him.”

Sophia burst out laughing and poked my arm. “Girl you are sneaky. He’s gonna lose his mind in the best way. How long has it been anyway? Like a month?”

“More like six weeks and don’t remind me. I feel bad but this internship news makes it perfect timing. I’m gonna head over right now before he makes other plans.”

She gave me this knowing look. “Go get your man. Text me all the details later. Or don’t because I don’t need to picture it.”

I grabbed my keys and the takeout I had already picked up and headed out still buzzing from the call. The whole drive over I kept smiling to myself thinking about his face when I walked in. Liam had been so stressed lately with the season and I wanted to make him forget everything. I pulled up to his place and parked quick. His car was there so good he hadn’t gone out yet.

I let myself in with the spare key he gave me ages ago because he doesn’t live alone and his roommates are always around. The second I stepped inside I heard noises from the back. Moans. Loud ones. My stomach dropped but I told myself it was probably one of his hockey buddies with a girl. Liam wouldn’t do that. I decided to just sit in the parlor and wait it out. No big deal right? The sounds kept going though and they felt way too familiar. That voice. Those little gasps. It sounded almost over and then there was laughing.

I sat there gripping the takeout bag so tight my fingers hurt. The door to the bedroom opened and two people came out fixing their clothes. Liam. And Vivian …. No fucking way… Vi…vian my stepsister. They were laughing together walking toward the front like they owned the place.

“You moan way better than my lame girlfriend does,” Liam said with this stupid chuckle.

Vivian snorted. “Right? Poor Minerva probably sounds like a dying cat compared to me.”

They both spotted me at the same time. Liam’s face went white. “Minerva? What the hell are you doing here?”

He ran over trying to grab my arms but I shrugged him off at first. My heart was pounding so hard I thought I might throw up. I didn’t slap him though. Instead I walked straight toward Vivian because all I could see was red. She stood there with her arms crossed looking smug like she had won something.

“Minerva don’t,” Liam said stepping in front of her and catching my wrist before I could swing. “Just stop okay?”

“Why?” I snapped yanking my hand back but he held on. “Why the hell would you do this Liam? On your birthday of all days? I came here to surprise you and this is what I get?”

He looked panicked talking fast. “You told me you won’t be around. You’ve been so busy with school and everything I barely saw you. But come here, I still want you.”

I laughed but it came out sharp. “Vivian has been busy with school too right? I chose you Liam. I spent three years of med school on the sidelines cheering for your nervous ass every game. I picked hockey because of you. I turned down other opportunities so I could support your career and this is how you repay me?”

Vivian rolled her eyes and flipped her hair. “Oh please Minerva. You were always so obsessed with him it was pathetic. Move on already.”

Liam kept holding me back his grip tight on my shoulders. “Listen to me. We didn’t plan this. It just happened, I’ll never hurt you like that. She just…. You know someone….”

I tried to pull away again my arms shaking. “Someone like my stepsister? The one who made my life hell after my dad left us for her family? Are you kidding me right now? I want to tear her apart Liam let me go.”

He wouldn’t budge just kept talking over me. “Minerva stop. I care about you but let’s be rational.”

“Be rational?” I yelled, interrupting him. I turned and landed a slap across his face.

“MINERVA!!” He screamed, putting his and to his cheek.

“I was at every game supporting you while you got all nervous and now you’re with her? The bully who stole my dad and now wants my boyfriend too?”

Vivian stepped closer frowning. “Why would you hit him? By the way, it's ex-boyfriend. And yeah you should move on because Liam plans on proposing to me.”

Chapter 12 Minerva Kendrick switched to the other side without answering, sucking deeper, tongue working in slow circles that made my thighs press together. Every pull of his mouth sent heat straight between my legs. He was good at this. Too good. The kind of good that made my thoughts scatter. When he finally lifted his head both nipples were wet and tight and aching. His hands slid down my stomach and hooked into my underwear. He dragged them off and tossed them somewhere behind him. Then he pushed my knees apart and looked down at me like he was deciding where to start. I didn’t give him time. I sat up, reached for his belt, and got it open. His pants and boxers came down together. His cock sprang free, thick and veiny, the head already shiny, and right through the tip was a silver piercing that caught the low light.I stared. “That’s… cute.”He actually laughed. “Cute is not the word most people use.”I wrapped my hand around him and felt the metal against my palm. It was warm

Chapter 11 Minerva I could barely remember the drive back to the hotel. My mind was still stuck on what happened. My lips still felt sore from the kiss, and my skin still felt hot where Kendrick’s hands had touched me.The moment the hotel suite door closed behind us, I turned around and faced him.“You have a fiancée,” I said. My voice was full of anger. “You kissed me like that, but you have a whole fiancée downstairs. A woman in a red dress who calls you darling in front of cameras.”Kendrick threw his key card onto the table. It slid across the surface before stopping.“Minerva…”“No. Don’t say my name like that.” I stepped closer. “You pulled me away from everyone. You kissed me. And while you were doing that, Elena was downstairs smiling for the whole world like she owned you. What is wrong with you?”He rubbed his face and ran his hands through his hair. It became messy as he looked away.“It’s not what you think.”“Then explain it.” I crossed my arms. “Because right now, it

Chapter 10Minerva She laughed. “That’s one word for it. Most of us try a little harder when the cameras are out. But I guess when you’re just the help you don’t need to bother.”Liam shifted uncomfortably. “Viv, ease up.”She ignored him. “No really. Look at her. Standing there like she wandered in from the training room. Some of us have standards.”I opened my mouth but never got the chance. Kendrick appeared at my side so fast I almost jumped. Elena was still across the room talking to someone, but he had left her there. He looked at Vivian like she was something stuck to his shoe. Then he turned to me and held out his arm.“Minerva. Come with me. Press wants a quick word about the medical staff.”I stared at his arm. He waited. I took it. His sleeve was warm under my fingers. He led me a few steps toward a cluster of cameras and reporters. Vivian’s face had gone tight. Liam looked like he wanted to disappear.Kendrick stopped in front of the lenses and spoke clear enough for ever

  • The Captain And His Psycho Intern    Chapter 9

Chapter 9MinervaI spent the whole night fighting the same memory. Every time I closed my eyes, it came back. His hands holding my wrists. His gaze fixed on my lips. The way he almost kissed me before pulling away like I was something dangerous.I barely slept. The almost-kiss kept replaying in my head every time I closed my eyes. His hands on my wrists. The way he looked at my mouth. Then the way he jerked back like he had burned himself. Every time I thought I was finally falling asleep, that moment came back again. I kept wondering what would have happened if neither of us had pulled away. Would he have kissed me? Would I have stopped him? I hated that I did not know the answer. By the time my alarm went off, my head felt heavy and my eyes burned from being awake most of the night.By morning the suite felt smaller than it had the night before. Kendrick was already dressed when I came out of the bathroom. His tie was straight, his jacket was on, and his hair looked perfect like

Chapter 8 Minerva “Everything okay?” I asked even though it clearly was not.He rolled his shoulder and winced hard. “Just my dad being himself. Always trying to drag me into his crap. Sponsors who want special favors. Corrupt bullshit. I said no and now my shoulder feels like someone stabbed it.”He tried to rotate it again and sucked in a sharp breath. Sweat broke out on his forehead. This was bad. Worse than the usual tightness.I got up and moved closer. “Sit down. Let me look at it. We can do a quick session now before it gets any worse.”Kendrick hesitated but dropped onto the edge of the bed. “Fine. But make it quick. I do not need you fussing over me all night.”I grabbed my massage oil from my bag and told him to lose the shirt. He pulled it off and tossed it aside. His back was a mess of old scars and tight muscles. Years of playing hard had done a number on him. I warmed the oil between my hands and started working on his shoulders standing behind him.“Right there,” he m

  • The Captain And His Psycho Intern    Chapter 7

Chapter 7 Minerva We landed in Chicago and I thought the worst part was over. My panic attack on the plane had left me drained but at least Kendrick had backed off after I caught my breath. No more hand holding or deep stares. We grabbed our bags and climbed into the team van with a couple other players who looked half dead from the early flight. I’m just glad I couldn’t site Liam or Vivian anywhere, maybe she wanted to take her dads private jet. I kept my headphones in and stared out the window the whole ride to the hotel. Kendrick sat across from me scrolling on his phone like nothing had happened. Fine by me. I needed the space. The hotel lobby was packed with people checking in for some conference but the team had everything handled. Or so I thought. Coach waved us over to the front desk and handed out key cards. Most of the guys got their rooms quick. Then the lady behind the counter frowned at her screen and looked up at Kendrick and me.“There seems to be a mix up with you
