Gabriel's POV

My heart broke at the sight.

"Joey," I called out again, and this time she reacted.

Her head snapped up. For a second, relief broke across her face before anything else could cover it.

I crossed the small bathroom in two steps, reached in, and shut off the water. I grabbed the towel off the rack and wrapped it around her shoulders. She grabbed my shirt with both hands and pulled me closer, needing something strong to hold onto more than she needed to explain what was wrong.

  • The Captain Wants Me Back!   82 - Something Easy

Joey's POVI woke tangled in dry clothes I barely remembered changing into, sunlight already poking through the curtains.I lay there a while, letting myself fully wake up. Gabriel ended up on the couch, as Winona had firmly told us, still laughing as she said it, that he wouldn't be staying in my room, with Cassian just down the hall.I replayed the night slowly, remembering every part. The fear I felt in that upstairs room already seemed far away compared to everything that came after: the kiss, Winona's happy face in the doorway, and Cassian pulling Gabriel away to question him about football like it was the most important thing in the world.I lay there thinking about it all, still half expecting to wake up and realize some of it had been a dream. That Gabriel had left the moment things became real, just like before.I went to the living room to make sure Gabriel was still there. He was asleep until Cassian came in. Bursting into the living room around eight, pausing at the sight

  • The Captain Wants Me Back!   81 - There Was Just Him

Joey's POVI froze the second Gabriel's mouth met mine, shock rippling through me. My hand pushed on instinct, trying to put some distance between us before I let myself fall any further into something I wasn't ready for yet.But he didn't let me.He pulled me closer instead, one hand splayed warmly against my back, and I gave up the fight. My fingers then curled into his shirt instead of pushing, and slid up, up, until my arms wrapped around his neck and I was kissing him back, opening up to him completely. It was like the four years of walls built were collapsing in a single breath. His hands found my waist and held on firmly.Mine combed through his hair, and for a long moment there was nothing else in the world except this: his mouth on mine, his heartbeat thudding hard enough that I could feel it against my own chest, both of us soaked and breathless and completely lost in each other.I forgot about the argument. The four years of silence. Roland. And everything that had ever st

Gabriel's POVMy heart broke at the sight."Joey," I called out again, and this time she reacted. Her head snapped up. For a second, relief broke across her face before anything else could cover it.I crossed the small bathroom in two steps, reached in, and shut off the water. I grabbed the towel off the rack and wrapped it around her shoulders. She grabbed my shirt with both hands and pulled me closer, needing something strong to hold onto more than she needed to explain what was wrong."You came," she said, voice wrecked."I looked everywhere for you," I said, pulling her up out of the tub, soaked shirt and all, not caring. "I didn't know where you'd gone.""I couldn't stay there." Her arms wrapped around my middle, gripping tight, like she needed proof I was actually solid. "Thank you. For coming, for finding me.""Of course I came," I said, and meant every word,I held onto her a moment before the rest of it started climbing up my throat, impossible to swallow back down any longer

  • The Captain Wants Me Back!   79 - I Needed To See Her

Gabriel's POVI stepped out of that upstairs hallway with my pulse still slamming against my ribs, Roland's face still burning in my memory.I scanned the crowd for Joey. She wasn't in the hallway, and she wasn't on the stairs either.I pushed past three people I didn't recognize, ignored what they said, and made it down to the main floor where the party was still vibrant, as if nothing had just happened upstairs. Someone had turned the music up. A group near the kitchen was doing shots off the counter, laughing too loud, and for a second, I hated every single person in that house for still having fun.I checked the porch first. It was empty except for two freshmen making out against the railing who scattered the second they saw my face."You seen a girl come through here?" I asked one of them, anyway, grabbing his arm before he could fully escape. "Dark dress. Brown hair.""Sorry, man," he said, already pulling free. "Didn't notice."I checked the driveway next, walking the full len

Joey's POVI froze. For a second, I forgot how to breathe.Gabriel. He was here.My heart nearly burst. Relief crashed over me, and my eyes went wet.I didn't know how he'd found me. I didn't care. He was here, and that alone loosened a knot I hadn't even realized had tangled so tight.I looked at his face, trying to understand what he was thinking. I couldn't. His expression was hard and unreadable, his jaw locked so tight I could see the muscle working beneath his skin."Gabriel," Roland said.I swallowed. My fingers, still frozen on the second button of my dress, trembled uselessly against the fabric.Gabriel didn't answer him right away. His eyes swept the room instead, moving from Roland to me, then to the phone in Devin's hand, the recording light still blinking, still watching, still capturing every second of my humiliation for someone else's amusement.Gabriel crossed the room and took the phone from Devin's hand."Hey!""Sit down."His voice came out cold, so cold I barely re

  • The Captain Wants Me Back!   77 - How Could He Be So Heartless?

Joey's POVI lay on my bed staring at the ceiling, stomach twisting into a knot that had nothing to do with hunger and everything to do with exhaustion.Between classes and everything else piling up, my whole body felt like it belonged to someone else, and a headache was building steadily behind my eyes.I didn't think I could make it to the club tonight. I reached for my phone on the nightstand and dialed Juan before I could talk myself out of it. He answered on the second ring."What?" he picked up, no greeting at all."I'm not feeling well. I don't think I can come in tonight."Silence stretched on his end long enough that I almost thought the call had dropped."Does this have anything to do with your schedule lately?" he said finally.I frowned, confused. "What do you mean?""Don't play stupid with me, Joey." His voice had gone flat, cold in a way that made my skin prickle. "I know you've been running around campus with one of my VIP clients."My stomach dropped. "What?""Roland G
