Chapter 30

Rory's POV

"Mom?"

Kian's voice cracked straight down the middle on that one word, and he pressed the handset against his mouth with both hands as if he could keep anything else from falling out of him.

The crying on the other end stopped. For a long moment there was nothing but static and the soft hiss of the channel, and I watched his whole body lean toward that little black radio on my father's table, waiting.

Then a woman's voice came back, low and shaking. "Kian."

That was all sh

Chapter 36Rory's POV"Pregnant," I repeated, because my brain had stopped working and that was the only word left in it."Seven weeks," Camille said. "I found out on Tuesday. I was going to tell him at dinner on Thursday, I had it all planned, I even bought this stupid little card with a duck on it. And then he sat across from me and told me he was still in love with you, and I just put the card back in my purse.""Camille, I'm so sorry.""Don't be. It's not your fault he never got over you." She laughed a little, and it came out wet. "Honestly, I think I knew. I just didn't want to know. You don't spend eight months with a man and not notice when he goes quiet every time somebody says your name."I slid down the wall until I was sitting on the hallway floor in Kian's shirt. "Why are you telling me and not him?""Because I know him. If I tell him now, he'll come back. He'll show up at my door with flowers and a ring and that serious face he makes when he's doing the right thing, and

You were doing great." He shut my door and walked around to his side, and when he got in he turned the heater all the way up and the vents blasted warm air straight at my frozen hands. His truck smelled like old coffee and engine oil and a pine tree air freshener that had given up years ago.He pulled out onto the coast road, the same road Harper's bike had just disappeared up, and turned the radio on low to some station playing a country song about a man whose dog was the only one who never left him."Really?" I said."It's a good song.""It's a sad song about a dog.""All the good ones are." He hummed along a little, one wrist hanging over the top of the steering wheel, and didn't ask me a single thing, and I sa

Chapter 33Rory's POV"Not here," I said. "Not now, Damian."I said it loud enough for everyone on the dock to hear, because I wanted everyone on the dock to hear it, and because if I said it any quieter, he would have taken it as a door left open. I knew him. Ten years apart hadn't changed that.Damian didn't move. He stood on the pier below me with his hands in the pockets of that dark coat, his face pale in the orange light, looking up at me the way he used to look at me across a crowded room when he wanted me to come over and save him from some boring investor. I hated that I remembered that look. I hated even more that it still did something to me.Behind him, Kian finally took hold of Harper's arms and gently pulled them from around his neck. She let go, but she didn't step back. She stayed right there beside him, close enough that their shoulders touched, and she looked from Kian to Damian to me with a small frown, trying to work out what she'd just walked into.Kian wasn't loo

Chapter 32 Rory He laughed against my neck, breathless, and lifted me with him as he stood up, and I wrapped my legs around his waist and he carried me the four steps to my father's bed, and the world narrowed down to that, to his weight and his heat and his mouth, to his name in my throat and mine in his, to the two of us claiming every inch of that last hour as if we could hold onto it by force. We were tangled together and gasping, my cheek on his chest and his heart going wild under it, when three heavy knocks hit the cabin door."Tide's turning," Nate called through it. "We leave in twenty minutes. And I'd appreciate it if one of you put a shirt on before Kian's mother comes back up the hill."Kian buried his face in my hair and laughed so hard the bed shook, and I laughed too, helplessly, the kind of laughing you can't stop once it starts, and for a minute we just lay there wrecked and laughing like two idiots while my brother walked away down the porch steps grumbling. The tr

Chapter 31Rory's POV"Do you hear that?" Kian said.I did. Out in the fog, somewhere past the rocks at the end of the little beach, came the slow knock and drag of oars against wood, then a splash, then the knock again. It was so quiet that morning I could hear the water dripping off the blades between strokes. The three of us had been standing on the stones since before the sky turned gray. Nate had brought the flare gun and was pretending he hadn't. Kian hadn't said a word in twenty minutes. He was standing at the very edge of the water with his hands shoved in the pockets of his jacket, and every few seconds he took a half step forward as if his feet had decided something without asking him.The sound came closer. Then a shape came out of the fog, low and dark, a small wooden rowboat with one person at the oars, her back to us, a hood pulled up against the damp.Kian walked into the sea.He didn't wait for the boat to reach the beach. He just walked straight into the cold water in
