Chapter 3

Author: Verdant Summer
Over the next few days, I left early and came home late, doing everything I could to avoid running into Keane.

Then, on Saturday morning, I walked into the kitchen as usual and found a steaming cup of coffee waiting for me.

It was the first cup of coffee he'd ever made for me in five years.

When he saw me freeze, he untied his apron and held the mug out to me. "There's a victory party tonight. Come with me."

"What for?"

"You've always wanted to meet my teammates, haven't you? They'll all be there tonight. It's a good chance to get to know everyone."

My hand tightened around the cup.

I'd asked countless times to be part of his world.

His answer had always been the same. "All we ever talk about is hockey. You won't understand any of it, and you'll just be bored."

Now he was offering. And suddenly, I didn't care anymore.

"Mia said there's been a misunderstanding between you two. She wants to apologize to you."

Whatever warmth I still felt disappeared completely. I nodded. "Okay."

That evening, I took a cab to the hotel alone.

By the time I reached the private dining room, everyone had already arrived.

Mia was sitting beside Keane, draped in his team jersey, her crutch resting against the table.

The moment Keane saw me, he casually pointed toward the empty seat by the door. "Sit over there. No room on this side."

Mia looked up with a bright smile. "Maeve, you're here. Keane, why don't I give her my seat? I don't mind sitting somewhere else."

She offered, but she didn't move an inch.

Keane immediately stopped her. "Your ankle hasn't healed yet. Don't move around. Maeve can sit anywhere."

Without a word, I walked over and took the seat by the door.

As soon as I sat down, Mia poured herself a glass of wine, then raised it toward me. "Maeve, Keane said you misunderstood our relationship, so I asked him to bring you tonight. I wanted to apologize in person. I hope you can forgive him."

"Forgive him for what? For giving you the friends-and-family ticket or spending the night in your hotel room?"

"Maeve!" Keane's shout cut through the room. He looked at me, his expression hard. "Apologize."

I didn't answer. I simply looked at him.

Someone beside us hurried to smooth things over. "Mia's just a fan. Keane accidentally injured her, so of course he's looked after her a little more."

I looked around the table. No one seemed to think anything was out of the ordinary. I let out a quiet laugh. "So this is perfectly normal to all of you? Just an athlete and his fan?"

The room fell silent.

Keane set his knife and fork down with a sharp clatter. His face darkened. "Are you done, Maeve? It was one thing to argue with me at home. Everyone's here celebrating tonight. Did you really have to spoil it for everyone?"

I picked up my phone and stood. "Since I'm ruining everyone's mood, I'll leave."

"Maeve! If you walk out that door today, don't even think about coming back!" His shout echoed behind me.

I never looked back. I pushed the door open and walked out.

A gust of warm air hit my face in the hallway. I took a slow, deep breath.

For the first time in five years, I refused to give in just to save him the embarrassment.

When I got home, I pulled my packed suitcase into the living room.

Tomorrow, I'd be gone.

Keane didn't show up again for the next two weeks. Then, one evening, as I stepped out of my studio, I saw him waiting beneath a tree. The wind ruffled his coat. He was clutching a manila envelope. The moment he saw me, he hurried over.I kept walking without looking at him."Maeve."He stepped in front of me. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and stubble covered his jaw. He looked exhausted, as though life had been drained out of him. "Give me three minutes," he said. "Just three minutes."I stopped and folded my arms. He took that as permission. His fingers trembled as he handed me the envelope. "My retirement papers."I raised an eyebrow."I've already submitted it to the team. I stepped down as captain too."His eyes held a desperate, almost humiliating plea. "I've given up everything back home to come here with you. You can keep being a photographer. I'll be your assistant. Your driver. I'll carry your equipment. I'll do anything... as long as I can stay by your side."He took a vel

Warm light filled the gallery. Every photograph hanging on the walls was mine.I'd put together a solo exhibition. The theme was Rebirth."Ms. Callahan, your mountains seem almost alive.""That's rare," the French artist said with a smile. "Very few photographers can breathe life into a landscape the way you do.""Thank you." My voice was even. "I suppose five years of photographing people taught me how to find life in everything else."As I spoke, I felt a burning gaze lock onto me.I looked over. Keane stood a short distance away. He'd lost a frightening amount of weight. His cheeks were hollow, his cheekbones sharp, and there was a lifelessness about him that made him seem like a shadow of the man he'd once been.A bouquet of white orchids rested in his arms. The moment our eyes met, his own lit up. He immediately started toward me.I looked away, excused myself from the artist, and walked toward another section of the gallery. He stopped where he was. Holding the flowers, he looked

Keane shut himself inside the apartment. He skipped team meetings, rehab sessions, anything and everything that had to do with hockey.Empty beer bottles were scattered across the living room floor. The curtains stayed tightly shut, leaving the apartment as dark as night. He'd always hated alcohol. It slowed his reflexes and interfered with training. Now he drank one bottle after another, hoping the alcohol would numb the hollow ache inside him.It didn't work. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw my calm face and that note covered in numbers. When the doorbell rang, he didn't move.It kept ringing. Then Mia called through the door, "Keane? Are you home? I brought you some soup."His brow creased. He didn't answer. She rang the bell for nearly fifteen minutes before switching to her phone. His phone buzzed beside him on the floor. Every call was from Mia.Finally, unable to take it anymore, he staggered to the door. The moment he opened it, Mia beamed. Leaning on her crutch, she start

The moment the plane landed, unknown numbers started flooding my phone.I didn't need to guess who it was. Keane had started calling from different numbers. I declined every call and blocked each new number as it came in.At last, I had peace and quiet.Dragging my suitcase behind me, I checked into the hotel. I'd barely finished when my boss called. "Made it to the hotel?""Yeah. Just got here."After a brief pause, she said, "Keane's been looking everywhere for you. He tried asking your friends where you'd gone, but they all blocked him. When that didn't work, he came to the office looking for me. He waited outside until I showed up. He looked awful."I could picture it.The hockey captain everyone admired, the man who'd always been the center of attention, had finally lowered himself to chasing down anyone who might know where I was. He must have looked miserable. My boss continued, "He actually cried while begging me to tell him where you were. He kept saying he knows he was wrong

Keane accompanied Mia through her follow-up appointment, but his mind was somewhere else.He couldn't stop replaying the look in my eyes as I walked away, or the medical report I'd been holding. An inexplicable sense of dread settled heavily in his chest. He pulled out his phone and opened our chat. "Are you home? Are you sick? Why were you at the hospital?"The message disappeared into silence.Keane stared at the motionless chat, pacing the corridor restlessly. His phone buzzed. His brow relaxed, and he opened the chat, only to find my final message to break up with him.He hurriedly typed back. "No, Maeve. I don't agree to this. We're not breaking up!"Message failed to send.A glaring red exclamation mark appeared beside it, cold and sharp: "Not Delivered."His fingers froze. He stared at the symbol for three long seconds before stubbornly typing another message. "Maeve, don't do this. I'm coming home right now. Let me explain, okay!"This message didn't go through either. His legs

Keane never came home that night. He walked through the door at dawn, carrying the faint scent of a woman's fruity floral perfume. He saw me on the couch, his expression cold. "Have you calmed down yet?"I was booking a ride on my phone without looking up.He scoffed. "Maeve, I'm honestly curious. I have plenty of female fans. Are you planning to get jealous of every single one of them?"I finally looked at him. "Keane, you still don't get it. Mia being your fan was never the problem.""Then what is?" he snapped. "Do you have any idea how hard she cried last night because of what you said? She's just a fan who likes me, Maeve, not your imaginary rival. Come with me and apologize.""I did nothing wrong. Why would I apologize?"He raked a hand through his hair and dropped onto the sofa. "I've got a magazine cover shoot today, but I'm off next week. Haven't you always wanted me to teach you hockey? If you apologize to Mia, I'll teach you. Sound fair?"I froze.Teach me hockey?Back when w
