Chapter 4

مؤلف: Verdant Summer
Keane never came home that night.

He walked through the door at dawn, carrying the faint scent of a woman's fruity floral perfume.

He saw me on the couch, his expression cold. "Have you calmed down yet?"

I was booking a ride on my phone without looking up.

He scoffed. "Maeve, I'm honestly curious. I have plenty of female fans. Are you planning to get jealous of every single one of them?"

I finally looked at him. "Keane, you still don't get it. Mia being your fan was never the problem."

"Then what is?" he snapped. "Do you have any idea how hard she cried last night because of what you said? She's just a fan who likes me, Maeve, not your imaginary rival. Come with me and apologize."

"I did nothing wrong. Why would I apologize?"

He raked a hand through his hair and dropped onto the sofa. "I've got a magazine cover shoot today, but I'm off next week. Haven't you always wanted me to teach you hockey? If you apologize to Mia, I'll teach you. Sound fair?"

I froze.

Teach me hockey?

Back when we first started dating, I'd wrapped myself around his arm and begged him to teach me.

He'd smiled, ruffled my hair, and promised, "When I get some time off, I'll take you to the rink. You can use my spare stick. I'll teach you myself."

That promise had been sitting there for five years.

Now he was using it as a bargaining chip to make me apologize to another woman.

"What, not good enough? Mia's asked me to teach her too, and I turned her down."

I looked at him steadily. "Then teach Mia. I'll pass."

He shot to his feet. "Maeve, this is your one and only chance. Walk away now, and don't come begging me later."

"I won't."

He glared at me before disappearing into the bathroom. A moment later, the shower roared to life.

I picked up my bag and left alone for my follow-up appointment at the hospital.

After collecting my test results, I headed toward the consulting room. Then I caught sight of two figures at the end of the corridor. The sight made my eyes sting.

Keane was supporting Mia as they slowly made their way toward Orthopaedics.

The man who'd claimed he had a magazine cover shoot was spending the morning escorting another woman around the hospital instead.

I slowed my steps and followed from a distance. Mia's voice drifted back, soft and sweet. "Keane, you canceled your photoshoot just to come with me today. Are you sure that's okay?"

"It's fine," he said gently. "There'll be other cover shoots. Your foot is more important."

I'd never heard him speak so softly.

I walked into the restroom, face blank.

I'd barely turned on the tap when Mia hobbled in on her crutch.

"So," she said smugly, "do you see it now? Keane cares more about me."

She tilted her head, gloating. "You know I only pretended to pass out last night? He stayed and looked after me all night.

"The front-row family seat you've wanted for years? He gave it to me twice without even thinking about it. And there'll be plenty more."

She held out her phone. A message from Keane had just come through. "Are you okay? What's taking so long? Want me to find a woman to go in and help you?"

She smiled triumphantly. "See how much he cares about me? I've been in here three minutes, and he's already this worried."

I let out a fake smile. "Congratulations. I hope the two of you are very happy together."

I shook the water off my hands and walked out. Keane was waiting outside.

He saw me, and his face changed. "Maeve, what are you doing here?"

I didn't answer. I tried to walk past him, but he caught my wrist. For the first time since we'd met, I heard genuine panic in his voice. "Maeve, listen to me. It isn't what you think."

I yanked my hand free. Behind us, Mia called softly, "Keane."

He leaned close and murmured, "Go home. I'll explain everything when I get back."

I said nothing. I turned and walked away. I never looked back. I never slowed down.

When I got home, I grabbed my suitcase and headed straight for the airport.

Just before boarding, I sent Keane one final message. "We're done. The friends-and-family seat is yours. Give it to whoever you want."

The instant the message went through, I blocked his number.

The plane rolled down the runway, gathered speed, and rose into the clouds.

I watched the endless sea of white outside my window and let out a long, quiet breath.

Five years spent hiding in the corner of the stands, chasing him through the viewfinder, had finally come to an end.

From now on, my camera would belong to mountains, oceans, and every road waiting to be explored. Never again would I waste another frame capturing someone else's glory.

Keane didn't show up again for the next two weeks. Then, one evening, as I stepped out of my studio, I saw him waiting beneath a tree. The wind ruffled his coat. He was clutching a manila envelope. The moment he saw me, he hurried over.I kept walking without looking at him."Maeve."He stepped in front of me. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and stubble covered his jaw. He looked exhausted, as though life had been drained out of him. "Give me three minutes," he said. "Just three minutes."I stopped and folded my arms. He took that as permission. His fingers trembled as he handed me the envelope. "My retirement papers."I raised an eyebrow."I've already submitted it to the team. I stepped down as captain too."His eyes held a desperate, almost humiliating plea. "I've given up everything back home to come here with you. You can keep being a photographer. I'll be your assistant. Your driver. I'll carry your equipment. I'll do anything... as long as I can stay by your side."He took a vel

Warm light filled the gallery. Every photograph hanging on the walls was mine.I'd put together a solo exhibition. The theme was Rebirth."Ms. Callahan, your mountains seem almost alive.""That's rare," the French artist said with a smile. "Very few photographers can breathe life into a landscape the way you do.""Thank you." My voice was even. "I suppose five years of photographing people taught me how to find life in everything else."As I spoke, I felt a burning gaze lock onto me.I looked over. Keane stood a short distance away. He'd lost a frightening amount of weight. His cheeks were hollow, his cheekbones sharp, and there was a lifelessness about him that made him seem like a shadow of the man he'd once been.A bouquet of white orchids rested in his arms. The moment our eyes met, his own lit up. He immediately started toward me.I looked away, excused myself from the artist, and walked toward another section of the gallery. He stopped where he was. Holding the flowers, he looked

Keane shut himself inside the apartment. He skipped team meetings, rehab sessions, anything and everything that had to do with hockey.Empty beer bottles were scattered across the living room floor. The curtains stayed tightly shut, leaving the apartment as dark as night. He'd always hated alcohol. It slowed his reflexes and interfered with training. Now he drank one bottle after another, hoping the alcohol would numb the hollow ache inside him.It didn't work. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw my calm face and that note covered in numbers. When the doorbell rang, he didn't move.It kept ringing. Then Mia called through the door, "Keane? Are you home? I brought you some soup."His brow creased. He didn't answer. She rang the bell for nearly fifteen minutes before switching to her phone. His phone buzzed beside him on the floor. Every call was from Mia.Finally, unable to take it anymore, he staggered to the door. The moment he opened it, Mia beamed. Leaning on her crutch, she start

The moment the plane landed, unknown numbers started flooding my phone.I didn't need to guess who it was. Keane had started calling from different numbers. I declined every call and blocked each new number as it came in.At last, I had peace and quiet.Dragging my suitcase behind me, I checked into the hotel. I'd barely finished when my boss called. "Made it to the hotel?""Yeah. Just got here."After a brief pause, she said, "Keane's been looking everywhere for you. He tried asking your friends where you'd gone, but they all blocked him. When that didn't work, he came to the office looking for me. He waited outside until I showed up. He looked awful."I could picture it.The hockey captain everyone admired, the man who'd always been the center of attention, had finally lowered himself to chasing down anyone who might know where I was. He must have looked miserable. My boss continued, "He actually cried while begging me to tell him where you were. He kept saying he knows he was wrong

Keane accompanied Mia through her follow-up appointment, but his mind was somewhere else.He couldn't stop replaying the look in my eyes as I walked away, or the medical report I'd been holding. An inexplicable sense of dread settled heavily in his chest. He pulled out his phone and opened our chat. "Are you home? Are you sick? Why were you at the hospital?"The message disappeared into silence.Keane stared at the motionless chat, pacing the corridor restlessly. His phone buzzed. His brow relaxed, and he opened the chat, only to find my final message to break up with him.He hurriedly typed back. "No, Maeve. I don't agree to this. We're not breaking up!"Message failed to send.A glaring red exclamation mark appeared beside it, cold and sharp: "Not Delivered."His fingers froze. He stared at the symbol for three long seconds before stubbornly typing another message. "Maeve, don't do this. I'm coming home right now. Let me explain, okay!"This message didn't go through either. His legs
