Shirley POV

After the intense game on Saturday night, Brad had cornered me again near the parking lot. His ego was bruised from the loss, but his confidence clearly wasn’t. He’d asked me, more like demanded, to come with him to the after-party.

“No,” I’d said flatly, meeting his eyes without flinching. I wasn’t someone easy to get. Not anymore.

The flash of irritation and surprise on his face had given me way more satisfaction than it probably should have. He wasn’t used to hearing “no,” especially from girls. Good. Let him choke on it.

Now it was Monday morning, my first real Monday at Hawthorne High, and I’d decided to show up looking like I owned the place. I wore my cutest outfit: a flowy pastel dress that hugged in all the right places, paired with light makeup and my favorite sneakers for that effortless-cute vibe. The school was already buzzing when I arrived. The hallways were crowded with students laughing, slamming lockers, and complaining about hangovers from the weekend parties.

The party had apparently been a blast. I’d checked Stacey’s I*******m stories out of morbid curiosity the night before, lots of dancing, drinks, and chaos, but no sign of Brad. Interesting. He hadn’t posted anything either. My conclusion? He’d been sulking somewhere after the loss. Or maybe licking his wounds in private.

Kayla spotted me and walked over with her usual bright energy. I smiled in greeting, but her expression quickly turned serious.

“Did you do anything wrong?” she asked, lowering her voice.

My heart skipped a beat. What do you mean, did I do anything wrong? I didn’t. I didn’t. My mind immediately went into overdrive, replaying every interaction from the past week.

“No, I didn’t,” I replied, maybe a little too quickly. “Why?”

Kayla shrugged. “Okay, good. Because the principal is looking for you. Like, first thing this morning.”

I blinked in shock. “What did you say?”

“Principal Hargrove is looking for you. He said it’s important and that you should go straight to his office when you get in.”

Oh shoot. I was in big trouble. And I had no idea why. My stomach twisted into knots. I covered my face with my hands for a second, groaning internally. What could I have possibly done already? It was only my second week here.

I smacked my lips, forced a bright smile, and straightened my shoulders. “On my way, then.”

I walked down the hallway toward the principal’s office, trying to look more confident than I felt. My heart hammered the entire way. When I reached the door, I took a deep breath and knocked three times.

“Come in,” a familiar voice called from inside.

I opened the door and stepped in.

Sitting across from Principal Hargrove was a ridiculously hot guy with dark, slightly tousled hair and striking dark green eyes. I recognized him instantly. Sebastian Hale. Westfield’s captain. The one who had dismantled Hawthorne’s offense on Friday night and smiled at me afterward like he actually saw me.

He looked back at me, and for a moment, his captivating eyes locked onto mine. They were mesmerizing, like a wormhole sucking me in, pulling at something deep in my chest. My mouth went dry. I swallowed hard and mentally slapped myself out of the trance. Get it together, Shirley. This is so fucking embarrassing.

Principal Hargrove must have noticed the spark between us because he clapped his hands once, sharp and loud, snapping both of us back to reality.

“Ms. Patterson, perfect timing,” he said warmly. “This is Mr. Hale. He’ll be our new transfer student starting today.

I recovered quickly and offered a polite smile.

“Hi, I’m Shirley,” I said, introducing myself.

He gave me a brief, cold nod in response. Narcissist much? I muttered in my head. Just because you’re hot and talented doesn’t mean you have to act like the king of the school almost reminds me of Brad.

I turned quickly to Principal Hargrove, my nerves getting the best of me. “Mr. Principal… you called me here. I didn’t do anything wrong, right? I’m innocent! I didn’t get into any fights. I didn’t participate in any underage drinking. I definitely did not shag anyone in the toilets. Anything that could offend the great name of Hawthorne. So… why am I here, sir?”

The words tumbled out in a nervous rush. I could feel my cheeks burning.

Principal Hargrove raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. Sebastian, to his credit, looked like he was fighting back a small smile. The principal leaned back in his chair and chuckled.

“Calm down, girl. You’re not here because of any offense,” he said, waving a hand. “Quite the opposite, actually. I want you to help our new champ over here.”

He pointed toward Sebastian, who shifted slightly in his seat.

I blinked. “Me?”

“Yes, you.” Principal Hargrove nodded. “You transferred here recently yourself, but I looked at your previous academic records. They’re on par with our top students. And since you haven’t joined any clubs or extracurricular activities yet, you have the time, the brains, and the perfect availability for this. I want you to tutor Mr. Sebastian Hale.”

Tutor him?

I glanced at Sebastian again. He was watching me now with those intense green eyes, his expression more neutral than cold this time. The idea of spending one-on-one time with Brad’s rival, sent a strange mix of anxiety and excitement through me.

“Tutoring?” I repeated, trying to process it. “As in… regular sessions? Homework, tests, the whole thing?”

“Exactly,” the principal confirmed. “Sebastian’s transfer was sudden, and we want to make sure he integrates smoothly, academically and otherwise. You’ll be compensated through the student mentor program, of course. Think of it as a leadership opportunity.” I didn’t know what to say, I couldn’t say no, so I feigned a smile instead and turned to him, "Hehe, it seems I'm your tutor then"

  • The Captain that was never mine   I'm sorry

Sebastian POVI stood there in the dimly lit parking lot, watching the red taillights of Shirley’s taxi disappear into the night. My chest felt tight, a strange mix of anger and regret swirling inside me. The mark from her slap still burned on my cheek. What the hell am I doing?Frustration boiled over. I turned and kicked the tire of my car hard, the impact sending a jolt up my leg. “Sebastian…”That voice again. it was that weird girl from before. She was walking toward me with that same obsessive look in her eyes.“You should stop hurting yourself over a third party like her,” she said softly, reaching out like she wanted to comfort me. “She’s not worth it.”The word “third party” hit like a slap. I pushed her hand away angrily, stepping back.“Don’t call her that,” I snapped. “And stop following me. Stop stalking me. I don’t want anything to do with you.”She looked hurt, but I didn’t care. I got into my car and drove off, leaving her standing there.I needed to get out of my hea

One moment I was kissing Brad and the next Stacey was screaming, trying to attack me, the entire room was staring. To be honest, I was carried away by the alcohol but I held insurance for myself so I wasn't scared, I guess it's time I do Stacey a favor and expose this scumbag, but then Sebastian intervened. He shoved Stacey away so hard she hit the floor. The crowd gasped at his action and I stood there, stunned, my heart hammering against my ribs. He defended me. Sebastian Hale, had just publicly stood up for me, what the fuck was he trying to do?! But before I could process it, his hand wrapped around my arm in a firm grip. “Come on,” he muttered in a low voice dragging me like some knight in shining armor. I tried to pull away. “Sebastian, what are you—” He didn’t listen. He started dragging me through the crowd toward the exit. His grip was strong but not painful, yet the force of it made my skin crawl with discomfort. People stared as we passed whispering softly. Oh gr

  • The Captain that was never mine   Chapter 15

Sebastian POV I was sitting at my desk, surrounded by notes and textbooks, working through the history review questions Shirley had drafted for me. Surprisingly, the session earlier had been productive. She was a good tutor when she wasn’t mad at me. My phone buzzed repeatedly. I ignored it at first, but the notifications kept coming. When I finally checked, I realized I’d been added to some group chat, probably by Stacey. Pictures from the party flooded the screen. The party looked fire. People dancing, lights flashing, drinks flowing. The mansion was packed. I scrolled through a few more photos and saw the address Stacey had sent me earlier. I leaned back in my chair, staring at the screen. I used to be a party guy back at Westfield, attending almost every event thrown. Maybe going tonight wouldn’t be the worst idea. It could be a good way to blow off some steam and actually try to make connections at Hawthorne instead of hiding in my room. Besides, I thought, and if i had no

Shirley POV The evening of Stacey’s birthday party finally arrived, and I was standing in front of my massive walk-in closet feeling slightly overwhelmed. Kayla had come over to help me get ready, and the moment she stepped inside my closet, her jaw dropped. “Girl… your closet looks like an entire mall!” she exclaimed, running her hands along the racks of clothes. “This is insane.” I shrugged with a small laugh. “We’re rich, I guess. Dad has a lot of connections and brings in good money. Most of these clothes just sit here though. I don’t really have many occasions to wear them.” Kayla grinned mischievously as she started browsing through the dresses. “Well, tonight is the perfect occasion.” After rejecting several options, she pulled out a sexy, short black gown with a deep V-neckline and delicate lace detailing along the sides. It was form-fitting, ending mid-thigh, with thin straps and a subtle shimmer that caught the light beautifully. “This one,” she declared. “You’

Sebastian POV I caught myself staring at Shirley again during the session. She really was different from what I’d expected. At first, I thought she might be genuine and felt guilty for lashing out her before, that was rude of me, but she looked like someone who didn’t fall for Brad’s charm. But when Kayla mentioned Stacey’s party on the phone earlier, I saw the way Shirley’s face lit up. I didn't expect her to be the socialite type, I mean she looks like a lowkey nerd. "I thought you weren't friends with Stacey, I mean both of you argued in the hallway," She looked at me raising an eyebrow, "She invited the whole school, and I have my reasons." Reasons? Yeah right, the only reason I could think of was Brad. Why the hell was I even thinking about Brad right now? I shook my head, readjusting my mindset. I wasn’t here to get involved in their drama. I was here to improve my grades, get back on the ice, and survive this forced transfer. We finished the rest of the session in rel

  • The Captain that was never mine   Can you stop looking at me like that

Shirley POV Stacey’s smile sharpened. “Good. It’ll be fun. Lots of people. Lots of… surprises.” She and her clique walked away, leaving me standing there, no matter how suspicious it looked, I still wanted to go. Remember Shirley, you came here with one goal, don't let some shitty social anxiety scare you off. I adjusted my mood and walked to my class. During lunch, I found Kayla at our usual spot and immediately dropped down beside her. “So… Stacey cornered me this morning,” I said, unwrapping my sandwich. Kayla’s eyes widened. “Again? What did she want this time?” “She invited me to her birthday party this Saturday,” I replied, watching Kayla’s reaction. “Said it was ‘just harmless talking’ and that the whole school is basically invited.” Kayla snorted. “Yeah, right. Stacey is not up to any good. That girl doesn’t do anything without an agenda. She probably wants to humiliate you in front of everyone or something.” “I know,” I said, taking a bite of my sandwich. But then I s
