Chapter 3

Author: Carnival Kid
In the end, Grayson didn't let me sleep on the living room rug.

With a look of disgust, he grabbed me by the collar and dragged me like a soggy sack to the storage room at the end of the second floor.

"This is your room. Don't start any more trouble. Scarlett isn't well right now. She can't handle being frightened, so you'd better behave yourself."

I looked around the tiny room filled with old newspapers and dust and felt strangely at ease.

The corners seemed perfect for building a nest. A little seaweed would make it even better.

I slowly crawled onto the narrow bed and found an abandoned stuffed animal beside the pillow. I balanced it on top of my head, enjoying the feeling of keeping my center of gravity steady, then peacefully fell asleep.

Early the next morning, a shrill cry woke me.

Scarlett stood in the dining room with the shattered remains of a blue-and-white porcelain vase at her feet. It was Victor's favorite antique and was supposedly worth as much as a house.

"Daphne, how could you smash Dad's favorite vase just because you're jealous of me?" She sobbed as she pointed at me while I slowly walked into the dining room.

Yes. After getting some sleep, I seemed to have figured out how to walk like a human.

Victor came out of his study, his hands shaking with rage. Even the finger he pointed at the broken pieces was trembling. "Daphne, what do you have to say for yourself?"

I stopped and stared down at the fragments for about five seconds. Then I looked up at Victor and calmly said, "Oh. It's broken. So it's broken. Maybe it wanted to rest too. Standing there every day must've been exhausting."

The dining room fell silent for a full thirty seconds.

Victor's face went from red to purple and finally turned livid, making him look like an overripe eggplant. "What kind of nonsense is that? That antique was worth five million dollars!"

The number didn't frighten me.

At the bottom of the ocean, even the prettiest pearls were just things to step on. No one cared much about possessions.

"Money is just a number. A vase is just clay. We should learn to accept that it's gone. There's no need to get so worked up."

I pulled out a chair, sat down, and slowly began peeling an orange.

Scarlett's sobbing abruptly stopped. She probably hadn't expected me to react this way.

Normally, Daphne would have been screaming that she was innocent and accusing Scarlett of breaking the vase herself.

But I was a capybara. The word "argue" didn't exist in my world. It used up too much energy.

Grayson stormed over and snatched the freshly peeled orange from my hand. "You're still thinking about food? Apologize to Scarlett! Get down on your knees and apologize to Dad!"

I stared at my empty palm, then at his furious face. "The orange is innocent. Give it back first."

Grayson threw the orange onto the floor and stomped on it. Juice splattered everywhere. "Daphne, did you fry your brain while you were gone?"

I looked at the puddle of orange juice on the floor and sighed softly, a trace of compassion in my eyes. "The orange is broken too. It wanted to rest."

Adeline clutched her chest and leaned against her chair, gasping as though she could barely breathe. "What a disgrace. How did I give birth to a freak like this?"

I ignored their hysteria and picked the roundest orange from the fruit bowl. This time, I didn't peel it. Instead, I carefully balanced it on top of my head.

Then I closed my eyes, rested my hands on my knees, and began my morning meditation.

Scarlett stared at me, an orange balanced on my head as I sat there expressionlessly, her eyes filled with fear. She probably thought I'd turned into some kind of indescribable horror.

Scarlett was arrested soon afterward because I provided some crucial evidence.Like the voice recorder she'd hidden inside a stuffed animal. It had been Daphne's final attempt to save herself. On it was a recording of Scarlett screaming as she pushed her into the ocean, "Daphne, die! Once you're dead, Asher will finally be mine!"The day the police came for Scarlett, her hair was wild as she desperately tried to lunge at me and claw my face."Daphne! You lunatic! You're not Daphne at all!"I stood on the steps with a bright orange balanced steadily on my head. "Oh. You're right. I'm really not her. I'm just a passing messenger of justice who stopped by to collect a debt."As Scarlett was shoved into the police car, Asher stood in the shadows nearby. He watched me with a calculating look, his expression dark with the certainty that he'd eventually have me.He walked over and tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear. "Daphne, now that we've gotten rid of that annoying woman, ar

While both families were busy preparing for the wedding, I was busy digging holes in the garden.I dug one after another, then pulled out Adeline's expensive flowers and planted sweet potatoes and lettuce instead. When Adeline discovered what I'd done, she was so furious she fainted twice. I kept doing it anyway."Daphne, what exactly are you trying to do?" Grayson stood at the edge of the garden, looking at the dirt covering me, a hint of exasperation in his voice.I stopped digging and wiped the sweat from my forehead. "I'm preparing a backup plan. If the Fox family goes bankrupt, I can still survive on this lettuce."Grayson scoffed. "The Fox family, bankrupt? You really have lost your mind."I smiled without explaining.I went right back to spending my days lying in the sun and staring into space.Adeline began coming into my storage room more and more often. She replaced my bedding with the softest sheets and filled the room with fresh lilies."Daphne, these were your fav

The dining room instantly fell so silent that you could hear a pin drop. Scarlett's face went deathly pale, tiny beads of sweat appearing on her forehead.Victor frowned. "What are you talking about? What do you mean someone pushed you?"I looked away and went back to chewing my lettuce. "Oh. Maybe I remembered it wrong. Maybe it was a giant crab. It was jealous of my beauty."Scarlett shot to her feet, her voice slightly shrill. "I... I don't feel well. I'm going back to my room."I smiled as I watched her flee.'Scarlett, you're scared. Because you've realized that not only did the dead come back, she's even harder to deal with than a ghost.'For the next few days, I became practically invisible to the Bradford family. Victor and Adeline were busy discussing wedding details with Foxes. The day the two families officially settled on a wedding date, Scarlett finally snapped. She stormed into my room and smashed all my skincare products."Daphne! What gives you the right to ma

When I saw there was no food on the table, I sat there staring into space.Mr. and Mrs. Fox looked grim and told Asher to take me home.In the car, he suddenly grabbed my hand. "Daphne, I didn't like what you said back there. I don't like greedy women. I liked the old you, when all you cared about was me."He squeezed my knuckles hard, the pain sharp and unmistakable.I didn't struggle. I simply turned my head and looked at him quietly. "Mr. Fox, do you know why capybaras get along so well with every other animal?"Asher frowned. "Why?""Because to a capybara, whether it's a lion or a rabbit, eventually it'll become nutrients for the earth. So I don't care whether you're happy or not, because as far as I'm concerned, you're already well on your way to becoming fertilizer."Asher's expression instantly turned ugly. He slammed on the brakes. The car skidded to a stop at the side of the road, leaving a long black mark behind it."Daphne, you have a death wish!" He grabbed me by t

A violent wave of nausea surged through this body.It was trauma buried deep in its very soul, a physical reaction that couldn't be erased even though someone else now occupied it.I gripped the door handle so tightly that my nails left a white mark on the leather trim."What's wrong? Not feeling well?" Asher noticed something was wrong, his voice carrying a trace of false concern.I took a deep breath and forced down the nausea, returning to my usual state of calm. "I'm fine. The air in here just feels dirtier than the ocean."Asher gave a cold snort and accelerated. The Fox family estate was in the suburbs. The moment I walked into the living room, I felt as though I'd stepped into a giant tomb.Asher's parents were already waiting for us. The way they looked at me made my entire body uncomfortable."Daphne, we're just glad you're back." Diana Fox took my hand, smiling falsely. "I think you and Asher should get married as soon as possible. That'll put a stop to all the gossi

I didn't see anything wrong with what I'd said. I was only offering a sincere suggestion. As a capybara, I'd always believed that while avoidance might be embarrassing, it was genuinely useful."Daphne, how can you make Dad so angry?" Scarlett started performing again, her voice choked with emotion. "You even scared Asher tonight. He's going to be your husband."I turned and stared silently at Scarlett. Her mascara had smudged a little. It looked like two black caterpillars crawling across her eyelids."He wasn't scared. I hit a nerve. He's probably busy trying to recover from it." I finished speaking slowly, then continued toward the stairs, my slides going slap, slap with every step."Stop!" Grayson rushed over and blocked my path. "Asher just called. He's picking you up tomorrow to have dinner at his family's estate. He said he wants to help you recover your old memories."I looked into Grayson's warning eyes, but all I could think about was whether the Fox family had lettuce.
