Chapter 4

After breakfast, Scarlett suggested we take a walk in the garden so we could get closer.

I knew she was up to no good, but I went with her anyway because the grass in the garden looked tender and inviting.

She led me to the fountain when no one else was around.

"Daphne, stop pretending to be crazy." She leaned close to my ear, her voice vicious, all traces of her earlier vulnerability gone.

"You think coming back means you can take back everything that belongs to you? Dream on."

I stared at the water flowing from the fountain. It sounded really soothing.

"Say something! You useless idiot!"

When I ignored her, she got angry and reached out to shove me into the fountain.

I saw it coming, but I didn't move. I simply let her momentum send me falling into the water.

Splash.

Water sprayed all over her face.

I sat in the shallow end, letting the fountain pour over my head and wash the orange I was still balancing there.

Scarlett froze. She'd expected me to struggle and scream. Instead, I simply sat there in the water and closed my eyes, thoroughly enjoying myself.

"Ah! Help! Daphne jumped into the fountain!"

Coming to her senses, she immediately started screaming for help.

When Grayson and Victor rushed over, they found me sitting in the middle of the fountain like a statue.

"Daphne! What are you doing?" Grayson jumped into the water and tried to pull me out.

I held down his hand and spoke sincerely, "Don't. I'm cleansing my soul. The water's just the right temperature. Want to sit down and try it too?"

Grayson's hand trembled, and he instinctively took a step back.

Scarlett was still wiping away tears on the edge of the fountain, claiming I'd tried to push her and slipped instead.

I wiped the water from my face and smiled at her. "Thanks for pushing me. This water tastes pretty good."

Scarlett's face went white, her expression shifting as if she'd suddenly realized something.

Meanwhile, I was only thinking about how nice it would feel to lie on the lawn in my wet clothes and soak up the sun.

Back in my room, I changed into a clean gray sweatshirt.

Adeline came in carrying a bowl of chicken broth, her expression still grim. "Daphne, have something to drink. I only want what's best for you."

In Daphne's memories, whenever Scarlett bullied her, this woman would dismiss it with a casual, "You're the older sister. Be the bigger person."

She set the bowl on the table, a probing look in her eyes. "Tell me the truth, Daphne. Where exactly have you been this past year? Did something bad happen to you?"

Oh, right.

I'd promised Daphne I'd get revenge for her.

How had I forgotten about that?
