The next day, I sat slumped in the cafeteria, my coffee mug barely warm between my hands.
“She said, ‘Get out and never come back,’” I muttered.
Noelle raised her brows and scoffed. “Like I care.” She leaned back in her chair with an exaggerated shrug.
“You should,” I said. “We need the money.”
Noelle shook her head. “I can always ask my parents.”
I shot her a look. “Aren’t you a little too old for that? Gosh, you’ve gotta quit that ‘gig’ and get a real job.”
Her eyes rolled skyward. “Yeah, sure. Because flipping burgers at Harry’s is such a career move.”
I huffed in frustration and reached for my mug again. That’s when I saw them — two guys walking into the café.
My gaze locked on one of them. Familiar brown hair, broad shoulders, and a confident stride that made my stomach churn. Memories came rushing back — heated whispers, tangled sheets, and a bitter morning after. My chest tightened.
“Oh no,” I muttered.
“You okay?” Noelle asked, noticing my stare. She turned to look — and gasped.
“They’re hot,” she squealed. “Like, stupidly handsome.”
I slapped her arm.
“Ow!” she yelped. “What was that for?”
“Stop drooling. We’re leaving.” I grabbed my phone and stood.
“Leaving? Are you insane?” Noelle looked at me like I’d grown horns. “Who are they? Do you know them?”
“Not here,” I muttered. “I’ll explain later.”
Her brows shot up. “Later? Girl, you’re acting like you robbed a bank.”
“I said later,” I snapped, grabbing her wrist and dragging her toward the exit.
“Let me go!” she shouted. “You’re being weird!”
I ignored her protests and pushed through the café doors, my pulse racing.
Once outside, Noelle shoved me away so hard I staggered back.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” she barked. “Why are you acting like you just saw a ghost?”
I glanced around, noticing a few bystanders watching us. My face burned.
“I’ll explain later,” I muttered again and hurried toward the car.
“Come back here!” Noelle shouted, storming after me.
I slammed the car door shut and leaned back against the headrest, raking my hands through my hair.
Noelle flung her door open and climbed in.
“What did you do?” she demanded, her tone sharper now. “Did you steal something?”
I shot her a glare.
“Stop being dramatic,” I snapped, but my voice shook.
“I know you, Kat,” she shot back. “You’re hiding something. And you know what? I’m sick of this crap.”
I clenched my jaw.
“You never tell me anything,” she continued. “We’ve been friends for six years, yet I barely know a damn thing about you! The only reason I even know how your parents died is because I was there when it happened!”
I stiffened, my fingers tightening on the steering wheel.
“Don’t,” I warned in a low voice.
Her expression softened. “Kat, I didn’t mean—”
“Don’t bring my parents into this,” I said firmly. Without another word, I turned the key in the ignition and drove off.

Two Days Later
The silence between Noelle and me stretched like a canyon. Neither of us had apologized, and both of us were too stubborn to break the tension.
Today, I decided to change that.
I’d bought her a necklace — something delicate and silver — and hoped it would be enough to smooth things over. We’d been through too much for this fight to tear us apart.
After finishing my shift at Harry’s bar downtown, I walked home. The streets were quieter than usual, dark and empty. No cabs in sight.
I shoved my hands into my pockets and kept walking.
That’s when I heard footsteps.
I glanced back — four men, laughing loudly, bottles of liquor swinging from their hands.
Stay calm, I told myself. Just keep walking.
“Hey!” one of them called out.
I quickened my pace.
“Hey, you deaf?” The voice grew sharper.
My heart pounded. I bolted, turning down a narrow street. Their footsteps thundered behind me.
I ran until I found myself in an alley — dead end.
Panic swelled in my chest. I spotted a stack of trash bags near the wall and squeezed myself behind them.
“Where’d she go?” one man barked.
“She’s hiding somewhere. Check the bags.”
I clenched my teeth, biting down a terrified sob. My boss had warned me not to walk alone at night. I should’ve listened.
“Hey, beautiful,” one of them called mockingly. “Come out. We won’t hurt you.”
I heard footsteps approaching.
My breath hitched. I slapped a hand over my mouth, praying they wouldn’t hear the tremble in my breathing.
“If I were you,” a cold voice drawled from the shadows, “I’d leave immediately.”
I froze.
“What the hell?” one of the men growled. “Who the fuck are you?”
Silence. Then —
A sickening thud. Someone groaned in pain.
I peeked out just in time to see one of the men crash into the wall, blood splattering across the bricks.
The stranger moved like lightning — fists flying, boots slamming into ribs. Six men against one, yet he tore through them like paper.
“Run,” a battered voice begged.
“Run?” The stranger’s voice was low and lethal. “You’re not leaving conscious.”
Another blow. Another body hit the ground.
I stumbled back, my legs shaking.
Before I could react, one of the bodies tumbled dangerously close to me. I screamed — and everything went black.
"Stay away from her and read your books."Nicole turned from the words she was memorizing to her mother."Mom, are you okay?.""I should ask you that. Why did Lilly's mother call me now?. Answer me,"Aiden walks in immediately."What is going on, Honey?." He asked looking from his wife to his daughter."Isn't she too young to fall in love?, love isn't what she should be thinking of right now. And well, that girl's mother is Lily Mila. The one we know of." Kat shouted and walked out of the room.Nicole looked at her dad."Dad, what is going on?. Why's my mom so angry with me?."Aiden replied, "Stay put and I'll talk to your mother."He walks away.Reaching the room, Kat was walking to and fro the room agitatedly. The way Lily talked to her over the phone would make anyone worried.Lily had called her and complained that Nicole made her daughter cry, not only that, that Nicole had taken after her in snatching men.Nicole was too young to be accused of such."Calm down, Kathleen. You're
Kathleen and Aiden made it downstairs together. Kat listened to Aiden after he told her to smile and act like everything's fine so that this would not make her visitor uncomfortable."So which family did you come from?." Aiden asked."The Miles family sir." The young girl replied.Kat asked, "You said your name's Lilly?. Like Lilly Miles?."The girl nodded and she looked at Aiden.Aiden whispered, "Don't tell me you're thinking of..?."Kat bent down and exclaimed, "Oh my god!."Nicole was just watching her parents reactions. As a smart kid, she already knew that her mom was not happy with her guest, then why?. What happened in high school that caused such insecurity?.That has been the question running through her mind."Mom, will I sleep at her place now?." Nicole tactically asked. To ask in front of her friend might make her give in to her. Nicole knew exactly where to get her mother."Fine. But I want you back the next morning. And also stay out of trouble." She ordered.Lilly and
"Nicole.." Lilly screamed, running towards her, she closes her locker and turned around."Xup, Lilly." She grumpily said.Lilly stopped smiling and asked her, "Why do you look sad?.""My mom disagreed, she'd asked me to bring you so she can see you."Lilly's face fell.Too bad."Well, my mom agreed. She'd asked to see the only friend who helped me with my school work." She replied,Lilly repeated classes after she fell numerous times, she was one year older than Nicole and they've become friends after she begged Nicole to help her with school works.Lilly is eleven and Nicole is ten.Nicole was the most popular and brilliant girl in school. She'd won so many trophies for the school."I think you would have to come to my house after school." Nicole said as they both walked away."Well, I've never met your mom. I know you must take after her," Lilly mused. Her friend was perfect, she had the perfect family, mom, dad, grandparents but Lilly never got to meet her dad, she only had her mom
"What do you want me to do now?."Kathleen turned to Nicole, she had been begging her to allow her sleep in a friend's place."Nic, I do not want to talk about this anymore." Kathleen huffed and said, then started walking up the stairs. She walked into Fiona's room and sat down beside her.Nicole came running in, but halted when she saw Kat sitting beside Fiona. The both older women were now looking at her, Kat said, "Nicole, are you here to ask your grandma to beg me?."Nicole almost broke into tears."Mom.."Fiona looked from kat to Nicole."What is going on?."Kat answered, looking at Nicole, "Your precious granddaughter is begging me to let her sleep over a friend's place. When I was at her age, I'd never think of that," She finished and Nicole looked down."Who's this friend?, because I know you don't have friends," Aiden asked, making everyone look at him. No one even noticed he was standing at the threshold. Kat could not take her eyes off him, he looked really handsome in a ca
Noelle ran outside, cutting Aiden off on what he was about to say to Dylan."Did you know she remembered?."Aiden and Dylan were confused."She remembered what?." He'd asked.Noelle breathed out. The way she ran had made her out of breath. She was trying to calm down too."Kat got back her memory."Aiden's eyes widened as he took up the run inside.Dylan and Noelle looked at each other for another moment without speaking to each other. He came closer to her and picked up her hand."I'm sorry that I walked out on you earlier." He said, lowly.Noelle smiled and hugged him quickly."I see that you are happy over the news."She disengaged from the hug."All my life, my life has evolved around Kathleen. I shared in her pains and in her happy days. I never really cared if I lived for her but I am glad. Do you know why?. She is fine. She's okay. And her sorrow days are over now.""You're a good friend. You've stood by her and you've fulfilled what a sister would do."He tucked her hair behin
"Helena?." Kat called."Kathleen," Helena called back."Wow. You two know each other, but I thought you lost your memory forever," Clara said and earned a glare from Kat and Helena."You. How dare you?. How dare you destroy my life?." Kat fumed and started getting up. Her eyes had turned stone cold and her hands were clenched."Not only did you destroy Natalie's life, you went ahead to destroy hers?. Why do you keep hurting the people I care for?." Helena stated firmly. Her guns were firmly pointed at Clara."If you come close to me, I will kill you both." Clara stated with fear.Just then, the police came running around them with their guns. All pointing their guns at Clara."Get down now!." One of the policemen yelled at Clara. It didn't take long before Clara realized that she lost. She had lost her battle. Her eyes were fixated at Aiden who had come running to Kathleen. A tear dropped as she saw both hugged and Aiden kissed her passionately. Her face went red.She screamed."Noooo
