Chapter 2

Autor: rika
“Aurelio!”

My grandfather stormed into the room, leaning on a silver-plated cane. My uncle and several Sorrento guards followed close behind.

“Have you forgotten that the Sorrento family still exists? How dare you treat Leah this way while I’m still alive?”

My father rose from the sofa and calmly set down his glass of whiskey.

His gaze moved over my grandfather and uncle, a faint smile on his lips.

“Now that everyone is here, some matters would be better discussed in the chapel.”

With that, he turned and headed toward the underground chapel.

My grandfather gave a cold laugh and started after him.

My uncle caught his arm.

“Father, let me go in first and see what this is about. You stay here. If anything happens, you’ll be able to intervene.”

My grandfather frowned and studied him for a moment before slowly nodding.

My uncle followed my father and disappeared down the stairs, leaving my grandfather and me alone in the hall.

My grandfather gently touched the wound on my forehead.

“Does it hurt? I’ve already made arrangements. Someone will take you away tonight. The farther you go, the better.”

I was about to answer when footsteps echoed from the bottom of the stairs.

My uncle emerged from the chapel, his face ashen.

I knew the look in his eyes far too well.

For ten years, every man who had walked back through that door—every one of my fiancés—had looked at me the same way.

There was fear and disgust in his eyes, as though I were a venomous snake that had to be destroyed.

“Uncle?” I called cautiously.

He didn’t answer.

The next second, he suddenly struck at me.

I twisted aside. My trained body reacted faster than my mind.

“Uncle, snap out of it! It’s me, Leah!”

He didn’t seem to hear me. Instead, he reached for my grandfather’s silver cane and tried to wrench it from his hand.

My grandfather seized his wrist.

“Stop! What do you think you’re doing?”

My uncle went still.

Then he leaned close to my grandfather and whispered a few words into his ear.

My grandfather’s fingers tightened one by one around the handle of his cane.

When he looked at me again, I saw shock in his eyes, followed by fear and, for one terrible instant, the unmistakable urge to kill me.

The silver cane slowly rose in his hand.

I didn’t move.

A few seconds later, he lowered it again.

“I’ll investigate what happened inside that chapel myself,” he said hoarsely.

My father stood some distance away, looking so calm that it frightened me.

“If you don’t trust me, you’re welcome to investigate for as long as you wish. But under Moretti Family rules, Leah must remain on the estate tonight and face punishment.”

As soon as he finished speaking, members of the Family silently closed in around us.

My grandfather stared at me for a long time, his expression darkening before he finally gave a slow nod.

In the end, he said nothing more.

He left the estate with my uncle and the guards who had accompanied them.

That night, I was taken away to receive what they called Family punishment.

When it was over, I walked back to the main house alone.

I had thought about escaping many times over the years.

But the Family had eyes everywhere in Sicily. There was nowhere I could go.

After my third fiancé came out of the chapel a completely different man, I went to the police for help.

When the officers arrived, everyone on the estate gave them exactly the same story.

“Leah has suffered from psychological problems for years.”

“She can’t accept it when a man leaves her.”

“The other two daughters in this Family are perfectly normal. Why is Leah the only one constantly causing trouble?”

They even produced what they claimed were complete psychiatric records.

Of course the police believed them.

No one believed me.

Afterward, I was locked in the basement beneath the estate for an entire week to “reflect on my behavior.”

When I was finally allowed back into the house, my two sisters smashed my encrypted phone and laptop in front of me.

“Leah, stop struggling. It’s pointless.”

Just like that, they cut off every way I had of reaching the outside world.

That was when I finally lost control.

I shoved past them and ran straight to my father’s study.

I burst through the door and screamed at him.

“If you never intended to let me have a normal life, you could have told me from the beginning! Why do you have to destroy everyone I love? How much longer do you expect me to obey you?”

My father’s expression darkened.

He seized my shoulder and slammed me onto the floor.

Gritting my teeth, I reached into my pocket and pressed the emergency button on the tiny backup locator I had hidden there.

It wasn’t long before police sirens sounded outside the estate.

The local officers had no choice but to respond.

When they entered, they carried none of the authority expected of the police. Their eyes held nothing but fear of the Don.

As they went through the motions of questioning him, my father barely looked up.

He slowly brushed the dust from his clothes.

“This is how things are done in Sicily. Under Moretti rules, every man who wishes to marry into this Family must enter the underground chapel and undergo a loyalty test. They all agreed to go inside willingly.”

He paused, his expression perfectly composed.

“Whatever happens in there is beyond our control.”

“It’s fate.”

Fortunately, the psychiatric facility was much quieter than I had imagined. There were no hysterical screams, and there were no patients behaving like the lunatics I had pictured.Everyone here had empty eyes, as if their souls had already been taken away from their bodies.I took my medication, received injections, and followed the schedule for sleep every day. When the weather was good, the nurses would take us outside to sit in the courtyard and get some sunlight. No one spoke, and no one interacted with anyone else. Time seemed to have completely stopped in this place.Day after day, I mechanically took my medicine, slept, and sat there in silence. My mind became slower, and I gradually spoke less and less.Until one day, I saw someone familiar. It was Rick.I held my breath as my eyes widened in disbelief.I could never mistake him for anyone else. He was the first fiancé who had appeared in the surveillance footage beneath the underground chapel, the man they had told me I had al

After they forced me back to the estate, they did not return me to the underground cell.My father kept one hand clamped around my shoulder and marched me toward the underground chapel himself. The rest of the Family followed behind us.I moved like a puppet on strings, allowing them to push me inside. This time, I didn’t struggle.I knew that resisting would be pointless. There was no way I could fight so many people on my own.The chapel door slowly closed behind me.My father walked to the wall and pressed a hidden switch.A moment later, a large video screen descended from the center of the chapel wall. When had all this equipment been installed? My father had no intention of explaining. Without a word, he began playing a surveillance recording.A young man sat in a chair on the screen, smiling gently into the camera.I recognized him immediately.Rick.He was my first fiancé, the man I had wanted to spend the rest of my life with when I was twenty. The recording continued.I watch

The light above my hospital bed was so bright that it made my eyes ache. With hands nearly numb from pain, I pushed against the mattress and struggled to sit up, desperate to stop the officers from asking any more questions.“Stop asking! There’s nothing there!”The officer questioning me frowned.“While you were unconscious, we performed a full examination. Other than the fractures caused by your fall, the scans showed no physical damage to your brain. Neurologically, you are perfectly normal, but your mental state is extremely unstable.”He studied me closely.“You’ve contacted the police several times before. What exactly are you afraid of?”I stared at him in despair.“Everything that happened before was something I staged myself. Just assume I’m insane.”They couldn’t keep investigating.I couldn’t let them enter that chapel again.“No! I’m not afraid of anything!”I shook my head frantically, my voice filled with panic.“I already told you. Those previous reports were deliberate.

I had expected myself to lose control and scream, but no sound came from my throat. What I saw shattered everything I believed and left my mind completely blank. My entire body trembled. I squeezed my eyes shut, then forced them open again. But the nightmare was still there.“Do whatever you want with me.”My knees gave way, and I collapsed onto the floor.“Someone like me, someone whose very soul has been stained... doesn’t deserve to be cherished by anyone.”My grandmother cast me a look of disgust.“Lock her in the underground cell.”Bracing my numb limbs, I struggled to my feet.“I’ll disappear for good. I’ll hide who I am, and I’ll never bring disaster to anyone again. Just let me go. You don’t need to lock me up anymore.”The only response I received was a room full of wary, mocking stares.“You lunatic. You should have disappeared ten years ago. What right do you have to remain on this estate?”“You think you can use this opportunity to escape? How naive.”“Every street and secu

My grandmother bent down, drew me against her with one arm, and helped me into my coat.“Take her to the main hall,” she ordered. Her voice was quiet, but it carried an authority no one dared challenge.“I want to see who truly rules this estate now—my son or a beast who has lost every shred of his humanity.”The guards exchanged glances. No one tried to stop her.In the main hall, my father was calmly clipping the end of a cigar. The moment he saw my grandmother supporting me, his expression darkened.“Aurelio!” my grandmother demanded. “Do the rules mean nothing to you anymore? If you don’t give me an explanation today, I will call a Family council and strip you of your authority!”My father clenched his jaw and gave a cold laugh.“An explanation?”I saw the ice in his eyes, and terror surged through me.Would my father take my grandmother into the underground chapel too?The thought alone made my entire body tremble. I clutched her sleeve tightly.“Grandmother, please promise me. Pl

My attorney, Marta, had arrived with the police. After learning what had happened to me, she trembled with anger and stepped directly in front of me.“Aurelio! She is your own daughter! No matter how much the Family’s interests mean to you, you have no right to hold her here against her will. If you truly hate her that much, why won’t you let her leave?”After hearing Marta’s accusation, the lead officer’s voice hardened. He demanded to know what shameful secret my father was hiding inside the underground chapel. My father didn’t answer. He merely gave a cold laugh.“You want the answer? Then come inside with me.”“Don’t go!” Marta shouted. “This has to be a trap!”My father slowly rose to his feet.“A trap? Officers, if you want to know what is inside, then come and see the chapel for yourselves. No one is allowed near it without permission. But since you insist on investigating, I’ll make an exception.”He paused.“Only two of you may enter.”I scrambled toward the lead officer and c
