Chapter 3

Author: rika
My attorney, Marta, had arrived with the police.

After learning what had happened to me, she trembled with anger and stepped directly in front of me.

“Aurelio! She is your own daughter! No matter how much the Family’s interests mean to you, you have no right to hold her here against her will. If you truly hate her that much, why won’t you let her leave?”

After hearing Marta’s accusation, the lead officer’s voice hardened.

He demanded to know what shameful secret my father was hiding inside the underground chapel.

My father didn’t answer. He merely gave a cold laugh.

“You want the answer? Then come inside with me.”

“Don’t go!” Marta shouted. “This has to be a trap!”

My father slowly rose to his feet.

“A trap? Officers, if you want to know what is inside, then come and see the chapel for yourselves. No one is allowed near it without permission. But since you insist on investigating, I’ll make an exception.”

He paused.

“Only two of you may enter.”

I scrambled toward the lead officer and clutched desperately at his trouser leg.

“Don’t go in! Please! Everyone who has walked through that door has come back wanting to kill me. There is something wrong in there!”

The lead officer looked down at me, and I caught a trace of sympathy in his eyes.

He gently pried my hands away.

“Don’t worry. We believe in evidence and what we can verify with our own eyes. We’ll do everything we can to help you.”

The lead officer chose a younger policeman, and together they followed my father into the underground chapel.

Ten minutes later, the two officers emerged one after the other.

The lead officer’s gaze swept over me.

Without warning, he strode forward and slapped me hard across the face.

It happened so quickly that I had no chance to dodge.

The younger officer followed behind him, his eyes filled with barely restrained hostility.

Marta rushed forward and shoved them away.

“Stop! You’re police officers. How can you hit her?”

The lead officer didn’t answer. He simply leaned down and whispered two sentences into her ear.

Marta’s expression froze.

She slowly backed away from me, her eyes filling with revulsion. Even her voice shook with it.

“I misjudged you. Leah, you filed a false police report and obstructed an investigation. Expect a court summons.”

“Marta!” I screamed after her.

She didn’t look back.

She hurried out of the estate as though she were fleeing from something.

The lead officer glared at me.

“We’re done here. Don’t call us back over another ridiculous false report, or you’ll be charged with obstruction.”

With that, the last bit of hope I had left disappeared.

That night, my father ordered his men to drag me into an abandoned stable in one of the estate’s side courtyards.

For three days, I was given nothing but moldy bread and filthy water.

My wounds festered, and I burned with fever until I thought I might die in there.

On the morning of the fourth day, the rusted iron door slowly opened.

An elderly woman in a long black dress stood outside.

Her silver hair was neatly arranged, and her gaze was calm. She carried the kind of quiet authority that inspired fear without requiring her to raise her voice.

She was the widow of the former Moretti Don and the only person who had ever dared to openly stand against my father.

My grandmother.

She stared at me in silence for a long time.

Then she finally spoke.

“Leah, you survived long enough for me to finally reach you.”

Fortunately, the psychiatric facility was much quieter than I had imagined. There were no hysterical screams, and there were no patients behaving like the lunatics I had pictured.Everyone here had empty eyes, as if their souls had already been taken away from their bodies.I took my medication, received injections, and followed the schedule for sleep every day. When the weather was good, the nurses would take us outside to sit in the courtyard and get some sunlight. No one spoke, and no one interacted with anyone else. Time seemed to have completely stopped in this place.Day after day, I mechanically took my medicine, slept, and sat there in silence. My mind became slower, and I gradually spoke less and less.Until one day, I saw someone familiar. It was Rick.I held my breath as my eyes widened in disbelief.I could never mistake him for anyone else. He was the first fiancé who had appeared in the surveillance footage beneath the underground chapel, the man they had told me I had al

After they forced me back to the estate, they did not return me to the underground cell.My father kept one hand clamped around my shoulder and marched me toward the underground chapel himself. The rest of the Family followed behind us.I moved like a puppet on strings, allowing them to push me inside. This time, I didn’t struggle.I knew that resisting would be pointless. There was no way I could fight so many people on my own.The chapel door slowly closed behind me.My father walked to the wall and pressed a hidden switch.A moment later, a large video screen descended from the center of the chapel wall. When had all this equipment been installed? My father had no intention of explaining. Without a word, he began playing a surveillance recording.A young man sat in a chair on the screen, smiling gently into the camera.I recognized him immediately.Rick.He was my first fiancé, the man I had wanted to spend the rest of my life with when I was twenty. The recording continued.I watch

The light above my hospital bed was so bright that it made my eyes ache. With hands nearly numb from pain, I pushed against the mattress and struggled to sit up, desperate to stop the officers from asking any more questions.“Stop asking! There’s nothing there!”The officer questioning me frowned.“While you were unconscious, we performed a full examination. Other than the fractures caused by your fall, the scans showed no physical damage to your brain. Neurologically, you are perfectly normal, but your mental state is extremely unstable.”He studied me closely.“You’ve contacted the police several times before. What exactly are you afraid of?”I stared at him in despair.“Everything that happened before was something I staged myself. Just assume I’m insane.”They couldn’t keep investigating.I couldn’t let them enter that chapel again.“No! I’m not afraid of anything!”I shook my head frantically, my voice filled with panic.“I already told you. Those previous reports were deliberate.

I had expected myself to lose control and scream, but no sound came from my throat. What I saw shattered everything I believed and left my mind completely blank. My entire body trembled. I squeezed my eyes shut, then forced them open again. But the nightmare was still there.“Do whatever you want with me.”My knees gave way, and I collapsed onto the floor.“Someone like me, someone whose very soul has been stained... doesn’t deserve to be cherished by anyone.”My grandmother cast me a look of disgust.“Lock her in the underground cell.”Bracing my numb limbs, I struggled to my feet.“I’ll disappear for good. I’ll hide who I am, and I’ll never bring disaster to anyone again. Just let me go. You don’t need to lock me up anymore.”The only response I received was a room full of wary, mocking stares.“You lunatic. You should have disappeared ten years ago. What right do you have to remain on this estate?”“You think you can use this opportunity to escape? How naive.”“Every street and secu

My grandmother bent down, drew me against her with one arm, and helped me into my coat.“Take her to the main hall,” she ordered. Her voice was quiet, but it carried an authority no one dared challenge.“I want to see who truly rules this estate now—my son or a beast who has lost every shred of his humanity.”The guards exchanged glances. No one tried to stop her.In the main hall, my father was calmly clipping the end of a cigar. The moment he saw my grandmother supporting me, his expression darkened.“Aurelio!” my grandmother demanded. “Do the rules mean nothing to you anymore? If you don’t give me an explanation today, I will call a Family council and strip you of your authority!”My father clenched his jaw and gave a cold laugh.“An explanation?”I saw the ice in his eyes, and terror surged through me.Would my father take my grandmother into the underground chapel too?The thought alone made my entire body tremble. I clutched her sleeve tightly.“Grandmother, please promise me. Pl
