ZoeIt takes me a second to realise where I am when I wake up. Stretching an arm out across the cool sheets, I frown when I don’t find Blake’s warm body beside me. Gripping the bed sheet in one hand, I sit up and squint into the darkness, listening for him in the ensuite. Blake“Maybe I can come and work for you?” I joke with a grimace as I lead Zoe downstairs, reluctant to leave the bubble of my suite. Leaving my bed was torture. I long to steal away and hide away with my mate, enjoying every inch of each other’s bodies as a normal wolf pairing does. She looks stunning, dressed in a simple cream jumper that sets off her golden tan, and fitted jeans that show off her delicious curves. Zoe“Did I bite you, Zoe? Did I do that?” Blake repeats impatiently, eyes blazing and jaw twitching, where he grits his teeth.Swallowing, I try to buy myself some time before answering. Blake’s already vibrating with rage and his hands are trembling by his side. His nostrils flare as he sucks in a deep breath to steady himself. My Blake is slipping away. Max“He’s trying to protect you. He's crazy about you, Zoe,” I say gently, as we pass the large wrought-iron gates at the end of the long driveway. The man standing sentry at the small building to the side bows his head in respect for who he considers his new Luna. Zoe “And so he just kicked you out?” Leah shoves her hand all the way to the bottom of the bag of chips and scoops out the last remnants. Telling her my sorry tale doesn't seem to have fazed her at all. I thought that at least the part about Blake shifting in the bathroom and racing out into the woods would get a reaction, but she barely blinked. “Kick me out is… harsh, but basically, yes.” I retrieve the well-chilled bottle of wine from the fridge and pour her a glass. “Eh, what about you?” She waves the other empty glass in the air, and I shake my head. Her eyes narrow. “No, I’m not feeling great and I’m on call tonight. ZoeMatt chats away as I pack up my bag and stand to leave, putting a hand against the rough wooden rail beside me to keep my balance. The foal is fine but very nervous and it’s made me feel a bit off my game. I’m still feeling a bit light-headed. I must be coming down with something. Peeking over the side of the stall, Leah is still sitting on a hay bale, petting Matt’s old sheepdog. She has been no help at all. I have no idea why she bothered coming.“Again, thanks for coming out, Zoe. I’m way behind on chores. Is it okay if I head out?” Matt asks, lifting his hat and wiping his forehead with the back of his hand. His smile is warm and friendly, and I’m reminded of what a genuinely nice guy he is. He’ll make someone a great husband.“Of course. I’ll call you in the morning to see how you’re doing.”He tips his hat to me and pushes the stall door open before slipping through. Blake Adrenaline pumps through my veins as I take off after Zoe at barely more than a slow jog. Forcing myself to stay in control as she lures me into chasing her, I can hear her footsteps and her panting slightly as she runs. My instincts are screaming at me to catch her and sink my already elongating canines into that soft, pretty neck of hers. But that won’t be happening in a dusty old barn. The cabin I use as my retreat is close by. I wanted to take her there and show it to her because it's my sanctuary. I hope she'll like it there as much as I do. Once I’ve reminded her exactly who she belongs to, hopefully, she’ll still be willing to come with me. “Crap,” she mutters to herself, and I grin. She’s trapped, and she knows it.
