Chapter 1

When Renata Pritchard and Samuel Harlow embraced and kissed, I was actually right there.

On the night of our wedding anniversary, I cooked a feast myself.

Not only did I prepare a full table of dishes, but I also poured my heart into baking a cake for Renata.

Yet no matter how many times I called her, she never answered.

Worried that something might've happened to her, I called her best friend, Vivian Rhodes.

Vivian was thoroughly impatient with me. "Renata's just your wife. It's not like she sold her soul to you! She's simply annoyed by you and doesn't want to be around you. Is that not allowed?" she replied.

Amidst her scolding, I caught the sound of a lively crowd in the background.

Renata's clear, sweet voice pierced through the receiver.

"Samuel! It's been so long. I missed you so much!" she said.

That single sentence That single sentence was enough to make my blood run cold.

Overhearing faint mentions of the beach, I sped off in my car as fast as I could.

What greeted me there was a sight I'd never forget for the rest of my life.

As brilliant fireworks erupted in the sky, Renata and Samuel smiled at each other, unable to resist pulling one another into a passionate kiss.

Beside them, people in the crowd whispered in admiration, "I heard he's Ms. Pritchard's college classmate. They haven't seen each other in five years."

"He only returned to the country today, and she immediately arranged a fireworks show just to welcome him," someone said.

"Is this the power of a first love?"

Yet when my name came up, their tone shifted into sheer disdain.

"Ms. Pritchard's husband? He's such a loser. She gets annoyed just looking at him! Don't mention him on such a happy day. It'll only ruin the mood!"

Under the bright fireworks, my heart slowly turned completely cold.

How could Renata's employees hate me so much for no reason?

It could only be because Renata treated me with that exact same contempt in front of them every day, and they were simply following her lead.

Back when I was pursuing her, Pritchard Group had just fallen into decline.

I abandoned my own career and exhausted almost the entire inheritance my parents had left me, enduring years of hardship before finally helping her family weather the storm.

It was precisely because of this that her parents had her marry me.

I knew she'd never let go of her first love. I also knew that when her family fell on hard times, that so-called childhood sweetheart fled abroad without hesitation.

I thought Renata would see through it all and realize who truly loved her.

I thought that as long as I loved her with all my heart, she'd eventually fall for me.

But the scene before my eyes was a slap in the face.

Her first love remained her only love, while I—the one who'd poured out my family fortune and wasted years for her—was only fit to be called a loser.

I raised the camera in my hands.

I'd originally prepared it to document our wedding anniversary.

At that moment, however, it captured the moment my wife kissed her first love.

Holding the photograph, I sternly warned myself, "Mitchell, give up. Stop clinging to any foolish illusions about her!"

Later on, I was invited to submit my work to a photography exhibition.

As I sifted through a stack of photos, the one I was most satisfied with turned out to be this very picture.

Unsurprisingly, it won the gold award.

Yet the moment they heard I was the one who took it, Vivian and a few other friends clutched their stomachs, bursting into uncontrollable laughter.

"Mitchell, you really take the cake! Who doesn't know that the famous photographer, Mick Sandler, is Renata's idol? He's a genius, unlike you! Who are you to compare yourself to him?

"How dare a useless fool like you impersonate him just to get Renata to spare you a glance? You're not worthy!"

Renata frowned too, her face tinged with faint disgust as she looked at me impatiently.

"Get lost. Keep Mr. Sandler's name out of your mouth, and get out of my sight!" she said.

The look she gave me was a world apart from the gentle, joyful woman in the photograph.

A wave of bitterness welled up in my heart.

I had loved photography since I was little and had some talent. I even won awards and gained fame during my college years.

Mick Sandler was, in fact, my pseudonym.

If Renata had bothered to pay even the slightest bit of attention to me, she'd have noticed these things.

I was often holding a camera, snapping photos here and there. His name, Mick Sandler, would sometimes appear in letters delivered to our home.

I'd always been waiting for her to discover it on her own. I'd hoped she would bring my work to me with a pleasant surprise and ask about it.

Yet after five years of marriage, why did she still know nothing about me?

Why did she interrupt me impatiently whenever I tried to bring it up myself?

I suppose there was only one answer—she didn't love me. She despised me so deeply that she wasn't even willing to spare me a single glance.

Finally coming to terms with this truth, I actually felt a sense of relief. It was as if a heavy burden had been lifted.

"Renata, since you hate me so much, let's get a divorce."

Suddenly, the sound of police sirens shattered the quiet night like a bolt of thunder. At that exact moment, I managed to break free from the ropes.Taking advantage of the split second Samuel was distracted by the sirens, I lunged straight at him and snatched the knife from his hands. He panicked, his face frozen in disbelief. "I planned everything so meticulously! How could the police be here? Who leaked the plan?" he shouted.I only managed to catch my breath after dragging Renata back against the wall in a corner."I'm the one who called the police. I saw everything you did after the banquet that night," I said. That was true. After the banquet, I didn't actually leave. Instead, I followed him.Deep inside that long, narrow alley, I caught him, Vivian, and several others plotting something together. They even exchanged several documents with one another.I'd been on my guard ever since then.I originally intended to warn Renata the following day so she would be careful, b

Late that night, there was a frantic pounding on my front door.I dragged myself out of bed, still half-asleep, only to find Vivian standing outside. Her face was drenched in tears. The moment she saw me, she grabbed my arm and urgently pulled me outside."Come with me, quick! Renata said that since you don't love her anymore, she has no reason to go on living! She's trying to take her own life right now!"Yet Renata no longer had anything to do with me.I was dragged a couple of steps forward, but just as I was about to shake off Vivian's grip, a sharp, searing pain shot through the back of my neck.I blacked out instantly. When I finally opened my eyes again, I was bound tight in an unfamiliar room.Several men were standing guard nearby.Samuel was also tied up right next to me.The door swung open soon after, and Renata was brought in blindfolded before she was allowed to take off the blindfold. She froze when she saw us.A man who appeared to be the leader said arrogan

The next time I ran into Renata was at a banquet held by a big shot in the business world. In the past, I'd always attended as Renata's family member, and not a single soul in the room ever spared me an ounce of respect. This time, however, I was invited as one of the city's young talents. The moment the name of the photographer "Mick Sandler" was spoken, quite a few big shots actively approached me to toast and strike up a conversation. In the middle of our chat, I suddenly felt someone locking their eyes on me.Turning around, I found that it was indeed Renata. Her parents and Vivian were all present, and beside them stood Samuel, who was standing beside them.Vivian stole a quick glance at Renata before suddenly walking over to me with a smile. She still had that high-and-mighty posture, yet her tone had turned somewhat flattering."Mr. Chandler, Renata has really been missing you lately. Why don't you take the initiative to offer her a drink? I'll help mediate things betwe

After letting go of the past, I began to devoted myself in improving my photography skills.Everyone in the industry praised me for my talent. However, having neglected it for years, I knew full well that stagnation meant regression. Thus, I practiced even more diligently.Lately, I'd grown fond of visiting the park. The flowers, the trees, the passersby, and the lakes—every corner offered a view.Just as I was framing a shot, a familiar face suddenly appeared in my frame.Though she was elegant and beautiful, my inspiration instantly vanished.I lowered my camera in resignation and reminded her."Ms. Pritchard, you're in the frame," I said. "If you're just passing by, please move along as quickly as possible."Renata looked like she was about to cry. Looking helpless and cautious, she asked, "You… you don't want to photograph me anymore?"In the past, I always praised her for being photogenic and begged to take photos of her, yet she consistently treated me with cold indiffere

I had imagined countless times how Renata would react when she finally discovered that I was Mick.Yet now, when it actually happened, it wasn't nearly as satisfying as I'd imagined.Perhaps it was because, without realizing it, I'd truly let go of her and no longer cared about what she thought of me.I calmly delivered my speech on stage. There wasn't much to say, really. The core message was simple. I announced my return to the photography circle. Together with like-minded creators, I'd continue pursuing the career I loved. When the exhibition ended, Renata was reluctant to leave for a long time.As I passed by her, she suddenly grabbed my sleeve tightly. Her hand was trembling, and the look she gave me was exceptionally complicated."Why did you never tell me that you were Mr. Sandler?"I found it laughable."I never told you? Why don't you ask yourself first if you ever paid attention to even a single word I said?" I retorted.Even though I'd already let go, countless me

Renata was unwilling to sign the divorce papers, so I had no choice but to move out first. The next time I saw her was at the entrance of my photography exhibition.Samuel was clearly determined to embarrass me. Not only did he bring Renata, but he also dragged Vivian, Donald, and Amy along with him.I guessed that if tickets hadn't been limited, he'd have loved nothing more than to bring every single employee of Pritchard Group just to publicly expose my "lie".Vivian swept a disdainful glance over me and said, "What are you doing here? Samuel didn't prepare a ticket for you! "Though it's a real shame you can't get in. Otherwise, I'd love to see you realize that a pathetic loser like you has no business trying to put yourself on the same level as a famous photographer like Mr. Sandler!"Renata frowned, a rare trace of worry and hesitation appearing on her face. She actually looked right at me, speaking with a rare sense of calm. "Go back home. Stop embarrassing yourself out he
