Chapter 4

Author: Richie Young
Renata flew into a rage, knocking everything on the table to the floor with one sweep.

She took a large gulp of liquor.

It had to be a figment of my imagination, yet I actually thought I saw the faint glimmer of tears at the corners of her eyes.

Everyone was caught completely off guard. At the sight of her like this, Samuel's expression darkened for a split second before quickly morphing back into a gentle, fake smile.

"Don't ruin your mood over someone like him. You've always hated him anyway. Isn't it great that he wants a divorce?" he asked.

Seeing her purse her lips silently, he added, "If you're feeling a bit hesitant, why not listen to your parents' advice?"

He really played his cards well.

Renata's parents, Donald Pritchard and Amy Miller, had never liked me.

Back then, I helped the Pritchards out of a tight spot, and they couldn't thank me enough. Now, they treated me with nothing but pure arrogance.

Perhaps it was because I'd seen them at their lowest. Now that they were back at the peak, they wanted to reclaim their lost dignity by constantly belittling me.

Samuel knew exactly how to use that to his advantage.

Teaming up with Vivian, he joined forces with Donald and Amy to urge Renata to get a divorce.

"Isn't Samuel the one you've always loved? Marrying you off to this useless loser back then was just a last resort.

"Now that he's willing to let go and sign the divorce papers, what are you still waiting for? We'll back you up. Once you're divorced, we'll let you marry Samuel right after!" Donald and Amy said.

Samuel remained silent throughout, acting like a gentleman.

Back when the Pritchards went bankrupt, he'd ran abroad. Yet now he'd somehow returned as the tragic first love that everyone pitied.

I'd given up everything to help them, but I'd instead become the pathetic opportunist who took advantage of their crisis.

I watched with cold detachment as they did everything in their power to tear me down.

I decided not to let it bother me. After all, our ultimate goal was the same.

We all wanted Renata and me to get a divorce.

Yet she kept being stubborn the entire time.

"I'm absolutely not divorcing him. You're all right that he's useless. After the divorce, he'll either starve to death or become a menace to society. I have zero desire to watch a scene like that unfold!" she said.

I couldn't help but speak up in my own defense. "I've already told you—I'm the photographer, Mick Sandler! I can earn a living on my own!" I said.

My defense was met with nothing but an explosion of laughter.

Vivian even clutched her stomach in exaggerated amusement. "Can you stop acting already? If you were Mr. Sandler, I'd jump off the 18th floor right now!" she said.

Samuel smiled mockingly as he stepped in to "smooth things over" for me. "Stop laughing at Mitchell. He's just panicking and blurting out nonsense. Though I do know Mr. Sandler's holding a small private photography exhibition next week, and only industry insiders can get tickets.

"I pulled a few strings to score a couple of tickets. When the time comes, I can take Renata to meet the real Mr. Sandler."

Donald and Amy showered Samuel with praise, saying he was thoughtful and capable. Meanwhile, they took the opportunity to mock me for being useless.

Watching the four of them laughing warmly together like a true family, I balled my fists and took a deep, steady breath.

A small-scale photography exhibition was indeed happening.

Along with the gold award from a few days ago, this was my comeback. It was my first step back into the photography world.

I was genuinely looking forward to seeing how Renata would react when she finally met the real Mick.

Suddenly, the sound of police sirens shattered the quiet night like a bolt of thunder. At that exact moment, I managed to break free from the ropes.Taking advantage of the split second Samuel was distracted by the sirens, I lunged straight at him and snatched the knife from his hands. He panicked, his face frozen in disbelief. "I planned everything so meticulously! How could the police be here? Who leaked the plan?" he shouted.I only managed to catch my breath after dragging Renata back against the wall in a corner."I'm the one who called the police. I saw everything you did after the banquet that night," I said. That was true. After the banquet, I didn't actually leave. Instead, I followed him.Deep inside that long, narrow alley, I caught him, Vivian, and several others plotting something together. They even exchanged several documents with one another.I'd been on my guard ever since then.I originally intended to warn Renata the following day so she would be careful, b

Late that night, there was a frantic pounding on my front door.I dragged myself out of bed, still half-asleep, only to find Vivian standing outside. Her face was drenched in tears. The moment she saw me, she grabbed my arm and urgently pulled me outside."Come with me, quick! Renata said that since you don't love her anymore, she has no reason to go on living! She's trying to take her own life right now!"Yet Renata no longer had anything to do with me.I was dragged a couple of steps forward, but just as I was about to shake off Vivian's grip, a sharp, searing pain shot through the back of my neck.I blacked out instantly. When I finally opened my eyes again, I was bound tight in an unfamiliar room.Several men were standing guard nearby.Samuel was also tied up right next to me.The door swung open soon after, and Renata was brought in blindfolded before she was allowed to take off the blindfold. She froze when she saw us.A man who appeared to be the leader said arrogan

The next time I ran into Renata was at a banquet held by a big shot in the business world. In the past, I'd always attended as Renata's family member, and not a single soul in the room ever spared me an ounce of respect. This time, however, I was invited as one of the city's young talents. The moment the name of the photographer "Mick Sandler" was spoken, quite a few big shots actively approached me to toast and strike up a conversation. In the middle of our chat, I suddenly felt someone locking their eyes on me.Turning around, I found that it was indeed Renata. Her parents and Vivian were all present, and beside them stood Samuel, who was standing beside them.Vivian stole a quick glance at Renata before suddenly walking over to me with a smile. She still had that high-and-mighty posture, yet her tone had turned somewhat flattering."Mr. Chandler, Renata has really been missing you lately. Why don't you take the initiative to offer her a drink? I'll help mediate things betwe

After letting go of the past, I began to devoted myself in improving my photography skills.Everyone in the industry praised me for my talent. However, having neglected it for years, I knew full well that stagnation meant regression. Thus, I practiced even more diligently.Lately, I'd grown fond of visiting the park. The flowers, the trees, the passersby, and the lakes—every corner offered a view.Just as I was framing a shot, a familiar face suddenly appeared in my frame.Though she was elegant and beautiful, my inspiration instantly vanished.I lowered my camera in resignation and reminded her."Ms. Pritchard, you're in the frame," I said. "If you're just passing by, please move along as quickly as possible."Renata looked like she was about to cry. Looking helpless and cautious, she asked, "You… you don't want to photograph me anymore?"In the past, I always praised her for being photogenic and begged to take photos of her, yet she consistently treated me with cold indiffere

I had imagined countless times how Renata would react when she finally discovered that I was Mick.Yet now, when it actually happened, it wasn't nearly as satisfying as I'd imagined.Perhaps it was because, without realizing it, I'd truly let go of her and no longer cared about what she thought of me.I calmly delivered my speech on stage. There wasn't much to say, really. The core message was simple. I announced my return to the photography circle. Together with like-minded creators, I'd continue pursuing the career I loved. When the exhibition ended, Renata was reluctant to leave for a long time.As I passed by her, she suddenly grabbed my sleeve tightly. Her hand was trembling, and the look she gave me was exceptionally complicated."Why did you never tell me that you were Mr. Sandler?"I found it laughable."I never told you? Why don't you ask yourself first if you ever paid attention to even a single word I said?" I retorted.Even though I'd already let go, countless me

Renata was unwilling to sign the divorce papers, so I had no choice but to move out first. The next time I saw her was at the entrance of my photography exhibition.Samuel was clearly determined to embarrass me. Not only did he bring Renata, but he also dragged Vivian, Donald, and Amy along with him.I guessed that if tickets hadn't been limited, he'd have loved nothing more than to bring every single employee of Pritchard Group just to publicly expose my "lie".Vivian swept a disdainful glance over me and said, "What are you doing here? Samuel didn't prepare a ticket for you! "Though it's a real shame you can't get in. Otherwise, I'd love to see you realize that a pathetic loser like you has no business trying to put yourself on the same level as a famous photographer like Mr. Sandler!"Renata frowned, a rare trace of worry and hesitation appearing on her face. She actually looked right at me, speaking with a rare sense of calm. "Go back home. Stop embarrassing yourself out he
