A short victory.

Arman

My victory was short-lived.

Very and absolutely short.

It lasted only those few seconds when unscripted horror climbed up Zoe’s features and her usually calm voice gave way to a shriek, but even then, my victory shrank when the only thought on my mind was how pretty she still looked even when horrified.

And it only got worse.

“That was quite a stunt you pulled there. You almost ruined the hard work everyone put into that scene, but then, Zoe’s undiluted reaction saved the day. I like it. The both of you make a very wonderful blend, but don’t go pushing her limits, Arman,” Eloise warned me. It was an obvious warning. She was telling me which side she stood on, and it wasn’t mine.

Everyone loved the scene, but it wasn’t my stunt that impressed them; it was her reaction.

I needed to calm down.

Luckily, my damp mood did not affect the rest of the scene. Experience had taught me to douse my true feelings when the camera began to record.

Zoe seemed cool except for the occasional killer gaze she spared for my eyes alone. Unlike the others, she did not appreciate the prank I pulled on her. Like I care.

Time flew, and we were done for the day. I changed into my casual clothes, ready to go home. Bridget had an issue with some newbie and she had to leave earlier, so I was on my own.

“Ughph!” Someone bumped into me. Judging by the smell of lilac that invaded my nose, I knew it could only be her. Zoe.

“Sorry, oh my, I’m so sorry.” Her eyes gave the most innocent look and I was surprised. For someone who had been staring at me like she couldn’t wait to kill me in private, it was easy to see that she had run into me by accident.

Zoe did not wait for a response before she dashed off with her shoe in hand.

I was almost at my car when the smell of lilacs freed my nose and was replaced by something absolutely disgusting. Cow dung. It was all over my shirt. My white shirt.

Zoe. Oh fuck. The shoes. It was the stupid shoes that had been dipped into cow dung. The bitch!

“C’mon, Arman. Zo says it wasn’t intentional. Look at the footage, she even apologized. Look at her face. C’mon!” Just like that, Eloise dismissed my complaint.

“My shirt is ruined!” I gritted. I wanted to strangle her.

But Zoe sat there, looking innocent—that pretty, childish look of an angel.

“Don’t worry, Arman. A new one will be delivered to your apartment in an hour. Same brand, same size,” M.J. assured me.

Everyone supported her.

“C’mon, Arman. Take it easy on the newbie.” Jude smacked me on the shoulder. I snorted. It was obvious that Jude was smitten with her; I noticed how he couldn’t take his eyes off Zoe. “Besides, even if it was intentional, don’t you think you deserve it?”

Just like that, the tables turned.

“Yes, you dipped her feet in cow dung.”

“You started it.”

“I think you deserve it.”

“Don’t complain, Arman.”

Someone had the guts to add, “I think you have finally met your match!”

My match? Zoe? This little baby actress? What the fuck did she know?

“Keep your fuckin' shirt,” I growled at M.J. before stalking out of the place.

Anger coursed through my veins like never before. I did not even feel this angry at Molly, even after I found out she had been sleeping with hotshots for big deals. It was like I always knew she wasn’t faithful to me; I just didn’t think she’d stoop so low as to sell her body for deals. It was more annoying to see that there were records—disgusting, even.

Zoe was another deal entirely. She was full of surprises. She was nothing I guessed she would be, everything I didn’t think she could be, and then she was more.

What I hated most was my attraction to her. I could not help but wonder what our kissing scenes would be like. What it would feel like to hold her in my arms, what she would taste like… I could not help but wonder. And despite how angry I was, I could not even hate her.

She ate up my mind, even while I knew that she might not even be sparing my name a thought.

“Long time no see, Mr. Anders,” the man said with a curt nod. Yes, it’s been a while since I came here. It’s been a while since I felt this mad… or unsettled.

“Prepare my usual while I go change,” I commanded. I couldn’t keep the edge off my tone. But then, I didn’t have to; this was the only place I could be real. No one cared about my looks, or my reputation, or my money. Everyone had their own baggage to deal with.

This was therapy.

It was not funny that Zoe had the power to push me here—something only my parents had the power to do.

“Here, Mr. Anders.”

I nodded, not bothering to mouth my appreciation while I put on the noise-cancellers.

I didn’t stop shooting until I had fixed six bullets into the wooden mummy.

“Is it because you’ve been away for too long? Your aim is off,” the voice was harsh.

The next four bullets I shot hit the same spot, clean and precisely on the forehead. “You were saying?” I angled my head at the man.

No retort came back.

Finally, I felt slightly calmer.

Zoe’s POVM.J. allowed me to release all the pent-up laughter inside of me before asking, “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?” he said with a small smile.I finally pulled myself together. I had really wanted to laugh for an hour, but I had to wait until we got the privacy of the car before releasing it. I had been seconds away from bursting. The anger on his face was rewarding. But now I realized I didn’t think my actions through. I had acted on impulse; I was going to rinse off the dung from the shoe when I sighted him, looking all clean and fresh. I hoped M.J. wasn’t mad at me.“I did not plan it, it just happened, but I would not deny that it was intentional,” I confessed. My spine hardened in anticipation of the scolding that might follow.Instead, M.J. reached forth a hand and ruffled my hair. “You naughty girl. I think he deserved it. I’m proud of you. He’ll know you are not easy to bully.”I couldn’t hold back the childish jiggle. “You’re proud of me?” My mom had never been

  • The Chemistry Clause    Marking territory.

Zoe’s POVI wasn’t overthinking. It wasn’t just me. Arman had definitely been offended by my words. It was two weeks after our first encounter. I had not attended any physical meetings since that first day because M.J. handled most of the logistics while I tried to settle in.Today was our first day of shooting. During the week, I had met most of the crew individually; M.J. made me go around and meet everyone for words of luck and advice. I kept meeting more and more famous people, and my self-esteem was hanging by a very thin thread. In this sector, I was nobody. I didn’t have parents that everyone admired and wanted to be like. I had no experience. I had nothing. The worst part was the role they wanted me to play—the same one M.J. promised everyone I would "destroy." I was supposed to be a city girl, a woman who had proven herself fit for a world governed by the survival of the fittest: Brenda Cox. Hair as straight as sin, wrapped in a perfect ponytail, always dressed in corporate a

  • The Chemistry Clause    The apology that didn't happen.

Zoe’s POVI should apologize.I had ignored Arman twice and indirectly called him stupid. Although the last part wasn't intentional, it wouldn’t have been so bad if everyone hadn’t been listening—but they had. We would begin shooting the movie by the weekend, and I would have to spend a lot of time with him. It wouldn't be good if we started off on the wrong foot. We already had, but I was hoping to correct it.M.J. would call for me any minute; he still had to show me my new apartment, settle me in, and teach me a lot of things, yet I had still not found Arman. I knew he was still in the building because his car was outside. Mind you, it wasn’t hard to figure out which car was his—the red sports car screamed his name even without the customized license plate.Where on earth was—There! I found him.I increased my pace to catch up with him, thinking it would be weird to shout his name, but he had already turned a corner. I would have bolted after him, but his words quieted my steps."R

  • The Chemistry Clause    The battle line

Arman POVI hadn’t recognized her immediately, but I knew Zoe looked familiar. I was sure I had seen that face before; one didn’t forget such beauty. However arrogant she might be, Zoe was breathtakingly beautiful.I had seen the look on her face when she spotted me—how she looked me up and down with her eyes and huffed. I should have known to mind my business, but what could a man do when standing before a woman so pretty?Zoe had ignored me, turning to ask M.J. for the phone she was already holding in her other hand. How else could a lady say she didn’t think I was worthy of a response?I swallowed my pride and held my head high, keeping the annoyance from my expression; my signature bad-boy grin did not slip.M.J. did the honors. “Arman, meet Zoe. Zoe, meet Arman. I’m sure you both have heard enough about each other.”My heart froze immediately. What had she heard about me? I had no bad reputation nor scandal, but I knew not every piece of information about me in this circle was go

  • The Chemistry Clause    To New York City!!!

ZoeMy mom was going to kill me. Dr. Veronica Adams had once threatened to slice my head open with an axe and then ask my dad to stitch me back up. I had a feeling she was going to do it this time.Because I was on a plane to New York to become an actress. What if it was all a scam? What if this man wanted to kidnap me and sell my body parts? Was sex trafficking still a thing?. What if all the people he had made me talk to were just liars like him?.“I can’t do this.” I gasped and unhooked my seatbelt. “I can’t do this, Jeremiah. What if I fail? What if I ruin my life?”.What had I been thinking?Jeremiah Lake smiled. “I can promise you that your life will not be ruined. You’re going to be famous, rich, and most importantly, happy. Besides, you can’t run now. We’re already on the plane”.I took a deep breath to digest his words. Happy. Happy. Happy. I would be happy. I would be free. I was yet to tell a soul.“We will be meeting with other actors and the crew members as soon as we lan
