"Brilliant! How did I not think of that mapping?"Ryan gnawed on a drumstick beside us. "You two are insane. I'm relying on you guys for all my assignments from now on."The next day, we had our orientation. Professor Charles Sutton, who oversaw the Scholars Program, was in his 50s with graying hair. His first words were, "You're among the brightest students in the country. But once you're here, everyone starts from zero."After the orientation, Charles pulled me aside. "J

Sunlight streamed through the windows and spilled across the floor, making the whole place feel warm. That evening, Mom made a whole spread of dinner. There was pot roast, baked salmon, and chicken stew. They were all things I had loved as a kid."Jason, eat more. Look how skinny you've gotten," Mom said."Mom, you eat up too," I replied.Wilbert came back and stood in the doorway."Wilbert, come eat with us," Mom said."I…" he hesitated."Come in," I said.Wilbert came in and sat at the table. Mom put a piece of salmon on his plate. "Wilbert, come over for dinner whenever you want."Wilbert kept his head down and shoveled food into his mouth.I glanced at him. "Wilbert, how much is your college tuition?""12,000 dollars a year," he replied."Aunt Karen should've saved enough for that," I said."Yeah." Wilbert nodded."Study hard from now on, and don't take shortcuts," I added."Got it," he replied. After dinner, Wilbert volunteered to do the dishes.I sat on the co

"Jason, the admissions director is calling you!" Dad said.As I walked out of the storage room, Ronald's voice came through the phone. "Jason, are your parents home?""They just got here," I replied."Great! I've already submitted the application for family housing," Ronald said. "It could be approved as early as next week. "I've also found some jobs for your parents. The library needs an assistant, and the cafeteria is hiring support staff. Neither job requires heavy physical labor."See which one your parents would prefer."I turned to Dad, saying, "Dad, the university arranged two jobs for you. You can work in the library or the cafeteria. Which one do you want?"Dad froze. "What? Harvorton is giving us jobs too?""Yeah. They're looking out for us," I replied.Dad scratched his head. "A library assistant? That sounds like a job for educated people. I'm just a construction worker.""Dad, you can read," I said.Dad tried to protest. "I can, but—""Just take the job." Mom

Wilbert pointed to several cardboard boxes in the corner. "The books got soaked, but I dried them out. They might be a little wrinkled."I got you new clothes. They're in the closet."The practice papers were too badly torn. I spent all night piecing them back together, and I still haven't finished."I looked at him, unsure what to say. When Wilbert finally looked up, his eyes were red-rimmed. "Jason, I'm sorry. I was a jerk. I know you don't care about my apology, but I need to say it."For three years, I knew Mom and Dad were treating you badly, but I never helped you. I even joined in."I'm worthless. Hit me if you want!"He stood in front of me with his eyes closed.I didn't move.Mom stood nearby, watching in silence. After a long while, I finally spoke. "Wilbert, how did you really get that 1180?"Wilbert opened his eyes, looking uneasy. "I…""Tell the truth," I said.He clenched his jaw. "I copied the answers from the student in front of me during the exam. I used h

I gave them a few brief answers. Then a reporter suddenly asked, "Jason, I heard you lived with relatives throughout high school. "Your grades were never very good, but you suddenly turned things around in your senior year. What's your secret?"I was silent for a moment, then smiled. "There was no secret. I just worked through practice tests until late every night. My foundation wasn't very strong, so I had to spend more time studying than everyone else."The reporter asked a few more routine questions. When the interview ended, Mr. Howe took me to his office.Several teachers were there.Ms. Carter was in the room too. She looked at me with red-rimmed eyes. "Jason, you've had a hard three years.""It's okay, Ms. Carter," I said."Are your parents coming home today?"I nodded. "Yeah. Their train gets in around noon.""That's good to hear." Ms. Carter wiped the corner of her eye. "Go home and spend some time with your parents.""Thank you, Ms. Carter," I replied.By the ti

I said nothing. I simply grabbed a kitchen knife and brought it down on the lock, breaking it open. The storage room was empty. My books, clothes, desk lamp, and practice papers were all gone. The only thing left on the floor was a torn-up textbook.I picked it up and looked at it. It was the test-prep book Mom had mailed me.I crouched down and gathered the pieces one by one.Karen stood at the doorway, at a loss for what to do. "Um, Wilbert…""Where is he?" I asked."He left last night. He said he was going to stay somewhere else for a couple of days," she replied.I stood up and looked at her. "Mom is coming home today. I expect you to be gone by the time I come back."Karen's expression faltered. "Jason, please don't do this. We've lived here for over a decade.""Move out of here." I carried the bag of torn pieces of paper and walked out of the house. …I had barely reached the entrance to the neighborhood when a black sedan pulled up in front of me.The window rolled
