Chapter 1

The floating comments were still scrolling madly above my head.

"Just thinking that even a drama king second male lead like Allen can end up marrying Cora makes me feel indignant on the male lead's behalf."

"Once Cora gets together with the male lead, she'll know what true love is."

"The more Allen acts up now, the harder he's going to fall later. I feel so satisfied just imagining it."

True love?

Where was the male lead when I was living in the basement with Cora, splitting a single bread roll into two meals?

When I sold the house my mother, Lauren Webster, left me to help Cora get through her crisis, where was the male lead then?

Now that Cora had become a billionaire CEO, what gave the male lead the right to swoop in and reap the rewards?

"Darling, why are your hands so cold?" Cora asked cautiously.

She looked down, her brow furrowing as she gently rubbed my hands.

But as I looked at her beautiful face, only one thought filled my mind—she was going to force me into becoming a cheap thirst-trap live streamer for someone else's sake.

I pulled my hand back.

"I'm not going home. Take me to the office."

Cora paused for a moment. "What made you want to go to the office today?"

"I'll wait for you to get off work so we can go home together."

She smiled, her eyes crinkling. "Okay."

Once we arrived at the office, her secretary, Shannon Shaffer, came over to hurry Cora along to a meeting.

"Darling, go wait for me in my office first. I'll be back soon," Cora said, then hurried off.

I went to the top floor alone.

The moment I pushed open the office door, I spotted a bag of oranges sitting on the desk. They were golden-orange and flawless in appearance, each one individually wrapped.

One glance was enough to tell that they were expensive.

Just as I reached out to take one, the floating comments instantly exploded through the air.

"Back off, Allen! The male lead bought these for Cora—they're ten dollars each!"

"The male lead normally only ever eats cheap food himself, yet he bought such expensive oranges for Cora. He really does love her."

"The male lead's love is the real thing, while Allen only knows how to take."

Ten dollars for a single orange? The male lead sure was generous with his spending.

I turned and went to the work area, holding up one of the oranges.

"Who bought these oranges?"

A young man with a perm timidly stood up. He had delicate, handsome features, and his eyes were nervous and hesitant, making him look like a startled fawn.

"I-I did," he answered in a small voice. "Mr. Brandt, if you don't like them, I'll take them back to my grandmother. She never lets herself indulge in stuff like this."

Everyone's expressions shifted immediately, turning reproachful as their gazes fell on me. It was as if they were saying, "He means well, so why are you throwing your weight around?"

Instead of getting angry, I held up the orange and smiled.

"You misunderstood. These oranges are delicious. They're ten dollars each, after all."

All eyes in the room shifted again. This time, they glanced toward the young man with a hint of knowing speculation.

The young man's face flushed bright red. He was just about to explain himself, but I didn't give him the chance.

"You've all been working hard lately. I had someone order these oranges—each of you can pick up a box from the front desk after work."

The work area instantly erupted with excitement.

"Thank you, Mr. Brandt!"

"Mr. Brandt, you're too generous!"

The young man's smile froze, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the hem of his shirt.

I couldn't stop grinning like an idiot. The floating comments came drifting through the air again."Hurry up and get together already.""Faye is so smooth.""Man, Mrs. Merrill is the ultimate wingwoman. What did she say? 'Starting from a professional relationship is the safest way to go?'""Allen finally smiled. He hasn't done that in so long.""Cora must be thinking, 'What? I'm not even dead yet.'""Whether Cora is dead or not has nothing to do with Allen anymore.""I stan Allen and Faye. She's the right person for him!"…Three months later, I arrived at the Gobeki Desert, where the temperature was minus four degrees Fahrenheit. The wind cut against my face like a knife.I stood in the snow, bundled up in a thick puffer jacket and wearing two layers of gloves, my camera hoisted on my shoulder.I had come alone. I wasn't waiting for anyone—I wanted to see it for myself.Green bands of light stretched from one end of the sky to the other, like a love letter written by t

Preston lowered his head and wept for a long time. After sending him the studio's address and contact information, I stood up."Focus on work instead of getting lost in all that nonsense. You have a long life ahead of you—don't waste your time on someone else's woman."I turned and walked out of the cafe. The sunlight was perfect. The comments exploded."Allen is repaying malice with kindness?""I'm crying. He helped Preston.""'In the story of my life, you're not even a supporting character.' This line is so badass.""This is what a true male lead looks like.""All those people who were trashing Allen before, come out and take your beating.""I shouldn't have insulted him. I was wrong.""Allen taught me that true strength isn't about revenge but indifference."I spent the entire day shooting Mr. and Mrs. Merrill's golden wedding anniversary photos. The location they chose was the park where they first met.50 years later, the park was still there. "You've heard about Infinity Group terminating the contract, right?" Cora asked."Yeah," I replied."Faye was the one behind it," she said, looking me in the eye. "She's courting you, isn't she?""That's none of your business.""Allen, listen to me." Her tone grew serious. "There's more to Faye than meets the eye. She's been in the entertainment industry for over a decade and has managed to stay at the top the whole time. You don't stay on top that long without getting your hands dirty.""That's enough," I said, standing up. "Cora, did you call me out here just to badmouth her?""I'm only looking out for you.""Your time to do that has already passed."I picked up my bag and moved to leave."Do you know why she got divorced?" Cora called out from behind me. "Her ex-husband, Keith Stone, said she was a control freak. She wouldn't even let him have a social life of his own."I stopped walking and said without turning around, "Cora, even if what you're saying is true, that's my

I didn't cry.The floating comments came flying."I'm crying. I'm genuinely crying.""Cora actually signed the divorce agreement. Their relationship is truly over.""That line about eating less instant noodles from Allen just stabbed me right in the heart.""Wait, why has the tone of the comments shifted? Wasn't everyone hating on Allen before?""That's because we were fooled earlier. Preston was supposedly so wonderful.""What happened to the canon ship? Where's Preston? How did he just disappear?""Cora transferred him to another city. He probably won't show up again.""So, Cora lost both men?""Serves her right."My new apartment was tiny—one bedroom, one living room, and a kitchen barely big enough for one person. But the balcony was huge.On my first day after moving in, I set up a small coffee table on the balcony, laid down a rug, and placed a beanbag chair. When I sat there at night, I could see the city lights.Fred helped me finish moving, then collapsed onto th

It was a photo of the rental Cora and I lived in back in college. There were the cheap floral-print curtains, the green couch we'd picked up at a thrift store, and two instant noodle cups sitting on the table. The caption read, "You once said these were the days you missed the most."I stared at that photo for a long time. Then, I replied, "Cora, what I miss isn't the days when we were broke, but the woman who only had eyes for me. Unfortunately, you're not her anymore."After sending it, I turned off my phone and went to take a shower.Hot water poured over my face. I couldn't tell where it ended and the tears began. The comments appeared once more."Oh my god, Allen is one clear-headed guy. I'll give him that.""Faye's been divorced too? They're destined for each other, alright.""Cora's getting all nostalgic now. A little late for that, don't you think?""I suddenly feel like Allen and Faye would make such a good couple.""Hold your horses. Let's see how things play out fi

The floating comments drifted past."Oh no! Cora's starting to play the emotional card.""Allen, don't go soft now! She took Preston to see the northern lights!""But Allen and Cora look so sweet together in that photo. I had tears in my eyes too.""Sweet, my ass. How does she explain going to see the northern lights with Preston?""Didn't you see she said it was for work?""Since when does work require the two of them to go see the northern lights? Don't try to make excuses."I put my phone face down on the nightstand and closed my eyes, thinking to myself, "It's all too late, Cora."…On the last day of the shoot, the wind had died down considerably, and the sea lay calm and still, as smooth as a mirror.Faye stood on the reef, her white shirt billowing in the breeze.I crouched down on the sand, searching for the right angle. The sunlight slipped through a gap in the clouds and fell perfectly across her profile.I pressed the shutter. This photo would turn out beautifull
