Chapter 2

Author: Soft Dawn
I was just about to wave my hand and say I didn't need the coffee when Maxim conveniently lost his grip on the cup, and the coffee poured straight down the front of his shirt.

The move was so dramatic I almost stood up and clapped. I had this strong feeling he was about to claim I'd deliberately splashed coffee on him.

Sure enough, his voice, trembling like he was about to cry, carried through the entire office. "William, I know you're secretly upset about me taking over what should have been your work, but I realize now how wrong I was."

As he spoke, he began lowering himself, practically ready to grovel. "If you're still angry at me, I'll get on my knees and beg for forgiveness right now."

Right on cue, the bullet comments popped up again.

"If William knows what's good for him, he should be helping Maxim up right now!"

"Maxim's only throwing William under the bus because he lost his grip on the coffee and doesn't want things to get awkward. This really isn't that big of a deal. William should just play along."

"William didn't even pay for the coffee earlier. Now's the perfect chance to get on Maxim's good side. Why won't he just take it?"

Our surrounding colleagues were all watching the drama unfold. Meanwhile, I kept a blank face and stared at Maxim, who was lowering himself slower than a tortoise, and quietly waited to see what kind of stunt he was really trying to pull.

Just as his knees were about to hit the floor, a furious roar came from behind him. "That's enough!"

The crowd parted, and Charmaine stormed through, marched straight up to us, yanked Maxim to his feet, and turned to scowl at me. "I think that's quite enough. He's already apologized. Must you be so unreasonable?"

Excuse me?

I'd been dating Charmaine for over a year, but only today did I realize she wasn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. I hadn't even uttered a single word from start to finish. How was I the unreasonable one?

After Charmaine dispersed the crowd, she whispered something in Maxim's ear. He blushed at that, nodded, and returned to his seat.

Then, before I could even speak, she grabbed my wrist and dragged me out of the office. The moment we reached the pantry, she flung my hand away and fixed me with an icy glare. "He's just an intern. Did you really have to make things difficult for him?"

I couldn't help but laugh. "Make things difficult for him? Was I the one who made him deliver those documents to you? Was I the one who forced him down on his knees? Charmaine Fitzpatrick, are your eyes and brain even functioning? Can't you see he's putting on a whole performance?"

Charmaine's face flushed red from being called out, and she sputtered, "Y-You—! How dare you talk to me like that? Fine! Starting today, Maxim will be my assistant. You can stay in your entry-level position and work on your attitude!"

I shrugged indifferently. "Sure."

She stomped her foot and stormed off.

Then, I calmly walked back to the office. Just as I sat down to continue working, the bullet comments appeared again.

"William shouldn't even try to do his job properly. He should slack off and cut corners so Maxim can shine even brighter as the hardworking and ambitious one."

"Exactly. Otherwise, how would Charmaine ever notice how great Maxim is and let their relationship bloom?"

I was speechless. These annoying comments just wouldn't leave me alone! But I had no intention of following their script. Instead, I focused on completing the work I was supposed to do.

The next day, I arrived at the office ready to send the completed proposal I'd prepared to Charmaine, only to find the document had vanished from my desktop. No matter where I looked, even in the recycle bin, there was no trace of the proposal.

Charmaine came out of her office, stood beside me, and tapped impatiently on my desk. "Where's the proposal you were supposed to submit today? Why haven't you sent it yet?"

Just as I was about to speak, Maxim interrupted with a snide tone. "Ms. Fitzpatrick, I'm afraid William probably can't come up with one."

I immediately sensed something was wrong. Maxim definitely had something to do with the missing file.

When Charmaine looked at him suspiciously, Maxim put on an innocent face and explained, "William was slacking off at his desk the whole time yesterday. The moment it was time to clock out, he bolted. There's no way he finished the task."

Without even waiting for my explanation, Charmaine immediately started berating me.

I took a close look at the person who had grabbed me. It was Charmaine. I hadn't heard anything about her in ages, but judging by her wrinkled clothes, vacant eyes, and the heavy dark circles under her eyes, life clearly hadn't been kind to her lately. Seeing her like this actually made me feel pretty good.I frowned at her. "What do you want?"She clung to my arm desperately, as if terrified I'd slip away. "W-William, please… For the sake of what we once had, go beg Dwayne to let me come back to work. I... I'll do anything! Anything at all! Be it a receptionist, a cleaner, whatever—just give me a job!"Ah, so she couldn't find work out there and came crawling back to me.I stared at her quietly. "Are you done yet? If you are, please move. My ride is here."Without warning, Charmaine dropped to her knees and started groveling on the pavement. "Please… I'm begging you… I'm really at a dead end. I know I was wrong! I really do!"I rolled my eyes in irritation and stepped around h

"Those comments said I was the female lead, Maxim was the male lead, and you were the villainous supporting character. They said I'd only succeed if I ended up with Maxim," Charmaine said."And... They also said that if I insisted on staying with you, I wouldn't just lose my position as manager—you'd eventually push me off a rooftop, and I'd die without my body even in one piece..."You have to believe me, William! I know this sounds unbelievable, but it's all true. You really have to trust me!"I replied calmly, "That's enough. I believe you."Charmaine looked up at me in disbelief. "You... you believe me?"I walked up to her and said, "I don't exactly trust you, but I believe the part about you seeing bullet comments. Because I see them too. And what I see is pretty much the same as you.""You... You can see them too?" Charmaine started stammering, "I... I thought—"I cut her off. "So, these comments aren't just targeting you—they're targeting me too. Which means, besides the

I zoomed in on Maxim's workstation, and there he was, legs propped up on his desk, scrolling through his phone while eating chips, smacking his lips noisily.I let out a derisive snort. "With that kind of half-assed attitude, do you expect anyone to believe you wrote this meticulous project proposal? You're probably the only one who buys that, Ms. Fitzpatrick."Maxim cowered behind Charmaine, but Dwayne reached over, grabbed him by the collar, and shoved him straight to the floor. "You bastard! Is this how you do your job while collecting a salary? This company doesn't keep freeloaders like you around!"Then he turned to me, suddenly cautious and deferential. "Um... Mr. Stein Junior, how would you like this matter to be handled?"I waved my hand dismissively. "Don't call me that. I'm just a regular employee of the company. Just handle it according to company policy. There's no need to consult me about it.""Of course, of course."Dwayne turned back around, his fury reignited as h

"And what makes you so sure I plagiarized his work?" I challenged Charmaine. She gritted her teeth and answered, "Because I personally assigned this project to Max. I still have our chat logs to prove it. I never assigned it to you, so why the hell would you be working on it?"I was this close to kicking both these liars.Charmaine had called me into her office and personally told me to take on this project. But now, she was claiming she never assigned it to me. Did she think she could spout nonsense like this just because she was the manager? All my colleagues looked utterly baffled too. As far as they knew, I'd been the one handling this project from day one. No one had ever heard it was reassigned to Maxim.Dwayne Barnes, a high-level executive of the company, noticed the darkening expressions on the upper management's faces and quickly stepped forward to glare at Charmaine. "What the hell is going on here? How did a simple presentation turn into such a mess?"Without batting

I almost laughed out loud at Charmaine's utterly self-righteous attitude. "Are you out of your mind? I stayed up countless nights working on this project proposal and revised it countless times before it was finalized. Why on earth should Maxim's name go on it? He's just an intern."Charmaine huffed dismissively. "You're used to pulling all-nighters anyway. It's not like it's that hard for you. Max desperately needs an achievement to get converted to permanent staff, and this is the perfect opportunity."I slapped her across the face without a second thought, turned, and walked straight out, ignoring her shrill screams behind me.The next day, I stood in the center of the conference room, ready to present.Maxim and Charmaine walked in together, and the moment Maxim saw me, he tugged pitifully at Charmaine's sleeve. She, in turn, fixed me with a venomous stare. That was when the bullet comments that had been absent for quite some time started popping up again. "William simply

"William Stein! You were slacking off during office hours? How dare you! Didn't I tell you last week that the proposal is due today? Are you disregarding my words?"I let out a cold laugh and pulled a USB drive from my pocket. "Who said I can't submit the proposal? I was just about to send it.""That's impossible!" Maxim let out a shrill cry. Then, when Charmaine shot him a puzzled look, he immediately started stammering, "I-I mean… How could William p-possibly have finished the task if he was slacking off the whole time?""The office has surveillance cameras to record whether or not I'd been slacking off. And whoever touched my computer—checking the footage will make that very clear too."Maxim's face went deathly pale, and his lips quivered uncontrollably. "Then… Then I must have been mistaken… William was working hard the whole time. He wasn't slacking off. Surely there's no need to check the footage, right?"But Charmaine seemed dead set on pinning me as guilty and refused to
