Samuel could not move any faster, and as soon as they stepped into the hospital, he took hold of Ciara’s hands. According to Mary, they must always appear married and in love. Newly wedded couple must not be perceived otherwise.

“Welcome, Mr. Samuel,” the nurse said, but Samuel was hardly listening to her.

“How is my mother?” Samuel asked as he barged into Mary’s room.

She laid there almost lifeless, the beeping sounds of the machines placed on her filling the room. Samuel halted, his resolve breaking. Ciara also stood beside him as they stared at Mary together. She seemed dead already, and Ciara could feel the fear in Samuel. She had never seen him like that, and he seemed like a man too cruel and ruthless to have such compassion and affection.
