You will sign a prenup with no claim to Asher assets beyond contract terms. Are you available to meet Mr. Asher tonight at 8 PM at The Asher House, Upper East Side? Car will pick you up at 6:30 from Newark. Dress code: cocktail, elegant.

Julie couldn't breathe. $50,000 a month. That was $600,000 a year for being a wife that wasn't a wife. She had wanted an offer she could never ever refuse. The universe had overnighted it.

At 6:29 PM, a black Maybach S680 rolled to her building on Broad Street. The driver, a man in a suit and gloves, opened the door like she was already a Mrs. something. She wore the only designer dress she owned, a second-hand Zimmermann she had been saving for a moment that never came. Now it came.

The Asher House was not a house. It was a limestone mansion on East 78th Street with security that scanned her phone and a housekeeper who took her coat without touching her. Inside, the air smelled like money that never had to work. Art that was definitely real. Silence that was expensive.

And then he walked down the stairs.

Tommy Asher, Taller in person, sharper, hair black, eyes a tired blue that had seen boardrooms since he was 19. Suit that probably cost more than her entire apartment building's rent for a year. Handsome in that cruel, clean way rich men are when they are also sad.

Julie from Newark, he said, voice low, Greek accent almost gone but there when he said Newark.

Mr. Asher, she said.

You don't look like someone who wants to disappear into a contract.

I don't want to disappear, she said, finding her voice. I want to appear. Everywhere. Expensively.

He almost smiled. That almost-smile changed his whole face, made him human.

Good. I need someone who likes being seen. My family... my father built Asher Capital. He is old school. Greek, traditional. The board is old school. They think a gay CEO is a liability. They think I need a wife to be stable. I have hidden who I am for ten years. I'm tired, but I cannot lose the company. My father is sick. Pancreatic. He wants to see me married before he... So I need a wife for two years. No love, no kids, no sex. Just performance. You need luxury without suffering. We both win.

Why me? she asked.

Because you said you don't want love or kids. Most women who apply secretly want to turn the contract into real. You don't. I read your post three times. You meant it. That's rare. And dangerous. I like dangerous if it's honest.

He slid a folder across the marble table. The contract was 42 pages. Allowance, lifestyle, rules. Rule 1: No falling in love. Rule 2: No other men or women in the house during contract. Rule 3: Public affection only when cameras are present. Rule 4: Complete discretion about his sexuality. Rule 9: No children, no pregnancy, termination clause if breach.

Julie picked up the Montblanc pen. Her mother had once told her, if a man offers you the world, read the fine print. She read it. Then she signed. The ink bled luxury.

Welcome to the family, Mrs. Asher, Tommy said. And somewhere in that huge quiet house, a clock ticked louder, as if counting down the two years they both thought they could control.

The first week as Mrs. Julie Asher was a masterclass in whiplash and cultural shock that Julie from Newark could not have prepared for even if she had watched every episode of Succession and Billions twice back to back. On Monday she was arguing with her landlord about the mold in her bathroom on Broad Street and whether she could get $100 off rent. On Tuesday she had a walk-in closet bigger than her old one-bedroom, with a stylist named Elise who kept saying Mrs. Asher, we need to archive your old Zara immediately, honey, it's giving Newark and we love Newark but we are Tribeca now, and we are old money now.

The Tribeca penthouse at 443 Greenwich had floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Hudson River, a chef named Carlos who asked her about gluten preference and whether she preferred oat milk or almond milk and whether she was allergic to shellfish, a housekeeper named Marta who folded her underwear like origami and called her Señora Julie, and a house rule that was unspoken but clear: Tommy lived on the west wing, Julie lived on the east wing, and the middle living room, kitchen, balcony, and screening room were neutral territory, like Switzerland, where they could be civil and pretend this was normal.

Tommy Asher was not what she expected at all. She expected cold, controlling, maybe handsy, maybe a guy who thought because he paid he owned. He wasn't. He was exhausted. He woke at 5 AM every day, Peloton, cold plunge, calls with London, then black Maybach to office at 52nd and Park. He came home at 9 PM, tie loosened, eyes red from screens, shoes off at the door like a normal person. He was polite, distant, always on his phone with someone named Mark, speaking in a soft voice she pretended not to hear when she walked past his office. He left her Post-its on the fridge with his terrible handwriting: Your driver is downstairs at 8. Board dinner Friday, need you in navy, not black, my mother hates black at family dinners. My mother will call you at 3, don't answer if you are busy but please answer, she worries.
