Stavros Asher died on a Tuesday in March at 3:14 AM. It wasn't dramatic like in movies where everyone screams and machines beep. It was quiet. He just stopped breathing while Eleni held his left hand and Tommy held his right and Julie held Eleni's shoulder in the corner of the master bedroom on East 78th that smelled like medicine and old cologne and rosemary from the kitchen. The nurse said, He is gone, softly, like she didn't want to wake anyone. Eleni didn't scream. She said in Greek, Kalimera, my love, go with God, and closed his eyes herself with shaking hands that had done this for her own father in Thessaloniki fifty years ago.

Tommy didn't cry at first. He just stared at his father's hand going cold in his, as if by holding tighter he could keep the warmth in. Julie cried enough for both of them, silent tears running down her face, because she had only known Stavros for nine months but he had been the first old rich man who never asked her what she did for a living, who never asked her where she was from to judge her, who just asked, Did you eat, koritsi mou, my girl, did you eat? And meant it.

The funeral was huge, Greek Orthodox, incense so thick you couldn't see the front pew, chanting in Greek and English, every billionaire in New York in black, every newspaper from the Times to the Post. The Real Deal blog that had outed Tommy six months ago now wrote a respectful obituary: PATRIARCH STAVROS ASHER DEAD AT 79, LEAVES EMPIRE TO SON TOMMY ASHER AND NEW WIFE JULIE. Eleni wore black veil and held Julie's hand the entire three hours, squeezing so hard Julie's fingers went numb. Mark stood in the back, in a cheap black suit that didn't belong among Brioni and Tom Ford, not family, not allowed to be family yet, crying quietly behind sunglasses. Tommy saw him and didn't look away this time. He nodded once, small, but it was everything.

A week after burial, Miriam Klein called both of them to her office at 8 AM on a Monday, before markets opened. The same office where Julie signed the original contract ten months ago with shaking hands and cheap acrylic nails she had done at a mall kiosk. Now her nails were real, manicured at Jin Soon, short, elegant, nude. Now her hands didn't shake when she held a pen.

Miriam put a manila envelope on the table. Last will and testament, updated January 14th, two months ago, after the outing scandal, after the board approved Tommy. Before that, the will had a clause, the famous Greek patriarch clause: Chairmanship transfers to Thomas Asher only upon proof of stable marriage and intent to produce heir within 24 months. That clause had kept Tommy closeted for ten years, had forced this entire contract marriage to happen in the first place. That clause was the reason Julie was here.

New will says, Miriam read in her lawyer voice that had no emotion, Clause removed entirely. Chairmanship transfers to Thomas Asher unconditionally, effective immediately, already done. Personal letter attached for Julie Asher and Thomas Asher and Eleni Asher.

Tommy opened his. Julie opened hers. Different handwriting, shaky, from a dying man who could barely hold a pen but wrote anyway.

Julie's letter said in English with Greek mistakes: Julie, koritsi mou. I know you are not traditional wife. Eleni told me you are not. I know my son loves Mark. I have known since he was 19 and I told Eleni to make him hide because I was ashamed and stupid and scared of what my friends would say at the Greek club. I was wrong. You came and my son smiled again. You made him soft. Soft is not weak. Soft is human. Thank you for protecting him when his own father and mother could not. You are my daughter now. Always. Keep my son kind. Stavros.

She folded it, put it in her purse, tears falling onto Chanel tweed.

Tommy's letter was shorter. Be free, agori mou. Love who you love. I will watch from heaven. Forgive your mother and me. Papa.

Miriam cleared her throat, because lawyers hate crying. There is also a financial amendment. Because marriage condition is removed, original contract's purpose is fulfilled early. Mr. Asher may trigger early termination clause 12.3, paying breach bonus of $5 million to Mrs. Asher and ending marriage immediately with joint press release citing irreconcilable differences. Or both parties may continue to full 24-month term.

Silence. $5 million. To leave. To be free. To be rich forever without ever working again. Julie from Newark could buy a building with that. Could buy two buildings. Could never worry again.

Tommy looked at her, eyes red, exhausted from not sleeping for a week.

You can take it, he said, voice hoarse. You deserve it. You saved my family. You saved me. Take the five and go. Open your store in Newark now. Be free.

Julie thought about Avon Avenue, about her mother's mortgage she already paid, about the little thrift shop she ran before called JulieThriftLoft that never made money. She thought about $5 million.

Then she thought about Eleni's hand squeezing hers at the funeral. About the Post-it notes on the fridge that said Good morning Mrs. Asher. About Mark's thank you in the kitchen that first month. About being lonely together, two people in cages that chose each other.

No, she said, pushing the termination paper back across the mahogany table to Miriam. I want to renegotiate, not terminate. I want to stay the full two years. But I want Amendment 1.

Miriam raised eyebrow. What amendment?

Julie pulled out a napkin she had written on at 2 AM after funeral, in her huge bathtub.

One: After 24 months, amicable divorce, no fault, no cheating narrative. Two: I keep Tribeca penthouse for 12 months after divorce, rent paid, to transition. Three: Deed to property at 125 Halsey Street, Newark, NJ, commercial building, fully paid and renovated as boutique, to be named Julie LUXURY LOFT, with initial inventory funded by Asher Capital up to $250k. Four: No kids clause remains non-negotiable. I will be rich auntie only. No pregnancy, ever. Five: Sunday dinners at Eleni's continue even after divorce, forever. Chosen family clause.

Tommy stared, then laughed, first real laugh since his father died, loud, ugly, boyish laugh that echoed in Miriam's office.

You are insane, he said. You turned down $5 million for a building in Newark?

She smiled, first time feeling like the one with power.

I don't want $5 million to disappear, she said. I want a building with my name on it that makes $5 million every year. I want luxury that lasts, not luxury that leaves. I want an empire, not a payout. That's what you taught me, Mr. Asher. Old money thinks in buildings, not bonuses.

He signed. She signed. Miriam notarized, shaking head, muttering, You two are the weirdest couple I have ever represented and I represented a man who married his dog's psychic.

That night, an email arrived that made Julie choke on her wine.
