I stood in front of my full length mirror in my apartment, twisting and turning in front of it.

The red gown fit like it had been waiting for me.

It clung where it should, skimmed where it needed to, the fabric soft against my skin as if it knew my body better than I did. The neckline was modest, but the back dipped low enough to make my spine feel exposed. Elegant. Dangerous. Not something a woman wore by accident.

I checked the time on my phone more often than I was used to, 5: 50pm.

I was ready

I paired gold accessories with the red dress, the smooth silk hugging me like a prison cell.

The car that arrived wasn’t just expensive.

It was intentional.

Long, black, quiet in a way that swallowed sound, it pulled up to the curb exactly at six. The engine purred once and went still, like it was waiting for permission to breathe.

Then the back door opened.

“Good evening, Miss Elara.”

I froze.

The man standing there was tall, clean cut, dressed in charcoal gray that looked custom made to move with him. His expression was calm, polite but sharp around the edges, I couldn't help but notice how closely he resembled Mr Black, I grabbed the hem of the dress tightly.

“Rowan Cole,” he said when I finally arrived in front of him. “I’ll be taking you to Mr. Blackwood.”

So this was him.

Mila’s voice echoed in my head, Tall, hot, dangerous, survived longer than anyone else and annoyingly, she wasn’t wrong. Rowan’s gaze was steady but not invasive, his presence grounding in a way that felt… practiced.

I took his hand.

I stepped into the car, pulse already unsteady.

The drive took longer than I expected. The city slowly gave way to quiet, trees, open land, the kind of darkness that felt intentional, leading me to my fate, The gates finally appeared, tall and iron-forged

Beyond them lay the property.

Lights glowed softly along a curved driveway, illuminating trimmed hedges, marble steps, and a structure that blended modern glass with old stone. It wasn’t loud luxury. It was pure wealth, the kind that didn’t come clean.

“This is… a lot,” I murmured.

Rowan’s lips twitched. “Mr. Blackwood doesn’t do ‘halfway.’”

Inside, the space opened into a private dining hall. No other tables. No background chatter. Just one long table set for two, candles burning low, crystal reflecting light like secrets.

And there, he stood.

Adrian Blackwood was dressed in black, tailored, precise, devastating. No tie. Shirt open at the collar, sleeves rolled just enough to reveal strong forearms. His hair was slightly undone, as if he’d run a hand through it and forgotten to fix it.

His gaze moved over me slowly, and so did he.

Not rushed, he took my hand, and kissed it, his lips soft against my hands, sending tingles all over my body, I fought the urge to pull my hand away, I turned my body around to thank Rowan, But I couldn't' find him, he seemed to have disappeared from the earth.

“You look,” he said, his voice husky, pulling me back to reality, “exactly as I hoped.”

Heat rushed up my neck. “Well I have you to thank for that, you planned my dress", I said as a matter of fact

“I planned the impression,” he corrected. “You completed it.”

He lead my to the table.

Dinner was served, glasses of wine and some food I could barely recognise, rich people food I guess, I did recognise some from when I would eat at Mila's place though.

The food was exquisite, but I barely tasted it. Every movement felt magnified, the way he lifted his glass, the way his eyes tracked me when I spoke, the subtle authority in his posture.

“You understand what this arrangement is,” he said eventually. “And what it isn’t.”

“I do,” I replied. "Just a pretend marriage, one year, I read the contract, cover to cover"

“Good,” he said calmly.

He explained the rules plainly.

I would live with him. Appear with him. Learn the rhythms of his world. The public would believe we were engaged. Tomorrow, that belief would be introduced carefully. Strategically.

“And in private?” I asked.

His eyes darkened, just slightly.

“In private,” he said, “we respect boundaries.”

Something about the way he said it told me those boundaries would be tested, I didn't want that, but maybe I did.

The contract appeared after dessert. I guess the original copy.

I signed, I had just signed one year of my life away, but it would be worth it I comforted myself, the money was worth it.

He brought a small box out of his pocket, his long fingers, holding the edges delicately, it was a ring box.

My eyes widened.

When he slid the silver ring toward me, I hesitated before giving him my hand, he slid it on my ring finger, I looked at it closely, it was beautiful, not simple at all, infact it screamed wealth.

He seemed to notice, "I wanted the carat big enough for another man to see you were taken even from miles away" his lips curved into a smirk.

“Symbolic,” he added, “Nothing more.”

My chest twisted, into a painful sting, I don't know why I felt that, I was nothing more than a pawn, I knew that.

As the evening wound down, I stood, smoothing the dress over my hips, suddenly aware of how exposed I felt under his gaze.

“Why me?” I asked quietly.

He looked at me for a long moment.

“You don’t panic,” he said. "And besides, your unknown background is an advantage to me.”, he added gazing into my eyes, almost like he was trying to read me.

“That can’t be all.” I refused to believe that was it

His voice lowered. “It isn’t.”

I took a breath. “Then why did you choose me?”

Silence stretched between us, thick and filled with tension.

“I didn’t choose you randomly,” Adrian said at last.

My pulse stuttered.

He stepped closer, I could feel the heat coming from his body, my face close to his chest, I swallowed.

“Your aunt” he continued

“She sent me to you"...

  • The Contract Wife of Mr. Black   Restless

The morning light bled through the terrace curtains, soft and golden, the kind of light that belonged on postcards. Elara barely noticed it. Her fingers were still wrapped around her phone, the email glowing on the screen like a confession she couldn't erase.5-7 business days. She had stared at those words so long they had stopped making sense.Behind her, Adrian's voice cut through the quiet. "You're up early, little lamb."She didn't turn. Couldn't. Her face would betray everything — the desperation, the fear, the slow-simmering fury that had been building since the night he carried her out of that clothing store like she belonged to him."I couldn't sleep," she said. Her voice sounded steadier than she felt.Adrian moved closer. She heard the soft pad of his bare feet on the stone floor, the rustle of his shirt — white linen, unbuttoned at the collar, the uniform he wore on the island when he wasn't performing for anyone. No cameras here. No board members. Just him.And her."You'

  • The Contract Wife of Mr. Black   Villa

"What's so funny?" Adrian looked up from his phone, still wearing that faint, private smile. It transformed him—softened the hard angles, made him look almost boyish. Almost human. Elera hadn't seen him smile like that. "Nothing," he said. "I'm... managing something." He said with a small deep laugh. Serena. The He pocketed the phone. The moment passed. But Elera stored it away—that smile, its recipient, the way it had arrived and vanished like a creature afraid of light. Serena. She said nothing. --- The boat cut through turquoise water, the mainland long since swallowed by haze. Elera gripped the rail, salt wind stripping the perfume from her hair, and watched the island take shape on the horizon. Private. Unmarked. No name on any map she could find. Adrian stood beside her, one hand braced on the console, utterly still. He hadn't touched her since they boarded. Hadn't performed a single gesture for an invisible audience. She didn't know if that made it

  • The Contract Wife of Mr. Black   Milla and Rowan

The Blackwood Tower elevator descended in silence. Rowan stood with his hands clasped loosely behind his back, a posture of patience, of control. Beside him, Mila Ivers scrolled through her phone with the aggressive focus of someone who refused to admit they were nervous. She wore similar cream silk blouse from yesterday, tailored trousers, heels that clicked against the marble lobby like a metronome counting down to something. She came prepared to fight, Rowan thought. Not to leave. Neither of them spoke as the town car pulled up. He opened the door. She slid inside without looking at him. The airport was a private one, small and unmarked, the kind that existed in the margins of maps and never appeared in flight trackers. Mila didn't comment on it. She also didn't comment on the Gulfstream waiting on the tarmac, sleek and gray, no visible registration. "Subtle," she said finally. Rowan inclined his head. "Yes Miss, it's better that way." "Mila". "Call me Mila". --- The ca

  • The Contract Wife of Mr. Black   Mila Contained

Rowan Cole had dealt with threats before. They usually came wrapped in legal language, quiet bribes, men or women who believed volume could replace leverage. Mila was none of those things. She didn’t shout. She didn’t pace. She sat across from him in the private lounge of Blackwood Tower, one leg crossed over the other, phone resting loosely in her hand as if it were nothing more than an accessory. The city glowed behind her through the floor-to-ceiling glass, all money and secrets and height. She smiled at him. That was the problem. “You’re ignoring me,” she said lightly, as if commenting on the weather. “Which tells me one thing.” Rowan didn’t respond. He took a measured sip of his espresso, eyes steady on her face. Calm was his currency. He never spent it early. “That you know exactly where she is,” Mila continued. “And you think if you stay quiet long enough, I’ll go away.” Her smile widened. Not warm. Calculated. “I don’t go away.” Rowan set the cup down. “Miss Ivers

  • The Contract Wife of Mr. Black   THE CHASE

The morning after the gala felt like waking up from a nightmare different world. Adrian wasn't next to me.He usually never was, My body ached from the tension of holding a smile for hours, my mind replayed Serena’s whispers on a loop, but more importantly how I didn't belong here. I really needed to find Claire, wherever Adrian was hiding her. I don't know how long I just... sat there, till I noticed the note left on his pillow in sharp, slanted handwriting: "I'll be home early, The jet leaves at 12 PM. Do not be late, little lamb.”I almost rolled my eyes I dragged myself up to pack, only to find it stripped bare. All my things—the few I’d brought and the many he’d bought—had been moved to his walk-in closet. His suits and shirts hung like silent sentinels beside my dresses. The intimacy of it felt violating. My phone, left charging on the bedside table, buzzed incessantly. The screen was a flood of notifications from Mila. Mila: ELERA PICK UP. Mila: WHERE ARE YOU??? M

  • The Contract Wife of Mr. Black   Not in his World

Alexander chuckled, holding up his hands in a gesture of playful surrender. “My apologies, Elera. I didn’t mean to startle you.” His smile was wide, charming, and utterly disarming. “I was just at the Verge Lounge—you know it, over on 5th?”“The club?” I asked, my voice sounding too small in the vaulted silence of the portico.“Of course! The whole place is buzzing about you two. A honeymoon, I had to swing by and offer my congratulations in person.”He stepped fully into the light, looking genuinely delighted. In the stark glare of the entrance lights, I could see the family resemblance—the same strong jaw, the same intense dark eyes as Adrian. But where Adrian’s gaze was a stormy sea, Alexander’s was a sunlit, shallow pond. Beautiful, but you could see straight to the bottom. And the bottom was all polished stone.“You both looked spectacular tonight, by the way,” he continued, his gaze warm and appreciative, lingering on me just a beat too long to be polite. “Elera, that emerald dr

  • The Contract Wife of Mr. Black   Honeymoon

Serena found us ten minutes later. Not alone, but drifting toward us with a small cluster of admirers who peeled away one by one as she approached, like courtiers instinctively sensing a private audience. “Adrian,” she said warmly. Then her eyes slid to me. “Elera.” Her smile was still perf

  • The Contract Wife of Mr. Black   The Ex

I woke in Adrian’s bed, alone but still wrapped in the scent of him. The linen shirt I’d slept in was twisted around my body, a tangible reminder of the new, suffocating proximity. Margaret arrived with a breakfast tray and a steely expression. “Mr. Blackwood asked that you eat, Miss Elera. He’

The words landed like stones in the silent room.Stopping me in my tracks.Adrian didn’t move from his position on the couch. He was dressed down in dark sweatpants and a thin black t-shirt that stretched across the hard planes of his chest, but he’d never looked less relaxed. The firelight carved

  • The Contract Wife of Mr. Black   Hospital

My stomach turned "Mrs?" I stood there for a long moment, staring at the black box like it might explode if I touched it, then I did, I took it, and it and got inside and collapsed on my bed, I had definitely had it today. My name sat on the tag in neat, deliberate print "Mrs. Elara Blackw
