Chapter 3

作者: Sway Sway
There were endless guests at the banquet hall on the day of the homecoming party, with everyone craning their necks to check out what the real heiress of the White family looked like.

However, I showed up in just a loose short-sleeved T-shirt and a pair of jeans, even though Mom had brought me over a dozen tailored dresses.

I refused without hesitation when I thought about having to waste so much time and effort to get changed and pretty up.

Beside me, Rosa was dressed flamboyantly, and there was no shortage of mocking laughter from the crowd.

"That's a hick for you—just look at Rosa in comparison. She's adopted, but it's like comparing a duck to a swan."

Hearing that, Rosa puffed her chest smugly as she relished the stares.

I couldn't be bothered to argue.

Since Mom and Dad weren't coming yet and I was feeling a little hungry, I went to a quiet place to sit down with the snacks I took.

Suddenly, someone bumped into me, but I thought nothing of it and kept munching.

In just a second, a woman suddenly grabbed my wrist and bellowed, "Why did you steal my necklace?"

Everyone turned toward us right then, while the woman, Yvie Starr, pulled a sparkly necklace out of my jeans pocket, snapping with righteous indignation, "It's a priceless heirloom from my grandmother, but you had it in your pocket! Who else could it be?!"

Then, holding up my hand, she turned to the rest of the guests and kept yelling, "Look, everyone! The rightful heiress of the White family is no more than a petty thief!"

The whole hall clamored right then, as the guests started to voice their disapproval.

Rosa appeared with impeccable timing just then, charismatically trying to make peace. "Yvie, you must have made a mistake. Claudia's not like that."

In reality, Yvie and Rosa were friends for over ten years, and Yvie looked disappointed upon seeing Rosa trying to intervene. "Why are you stopping me? Are you really happy being outshone by some petty thief?"

Rosa kept smiling.

Despite her intervention, she couldn't be more gleeful inwardly.

As for me, I had enough of such cheap frame-up routines for a lifetime, so I turned to leave.

"Stop!" Yvie grabbed my arm right then, smirking. "What, stealing my stuff and running? Is this how the White family raised you?"

I sighed wearily, mustering my vocal chords to say dryly, "I didn't."

However, this really got Yvie upset, and she shrieked, "Who else could it be?! You're the only bum in this entire hall!"

She then pushed me violently, knocking me to the floor.

I was going to defend myself because this concerned basic morals… until my back touched the carpet, and I realized it was softer than my bed.

As such, I simply closed my eyes and stayed on my back.

That was when Mom came downstairs, her shrill screams almost familiar now.

"Baby! Are you alright?!" she cried as she rushed to my side and glared at the crowd. "Who did this?!"

The guests had clearly presumed that the White family didn't care about me at all, given my plain outfit.

Now, seeing Mom's outburst, they realized it was not the case.

Yvie was stunned too, stammering as she argued, "S-She stole from me. I only gave her a little shove…"

Mom narrowed her eyes. "And what did she steal?"

Yvie quickly pulled out her necklace, only for Mom to snatch it, fling it on the floor, and crush it under her foot. "That's trash! Even our dog would look like a beggar if it put that on!"

Dad was glowering too as he growled dangerously, "Did you think our family can't afford that with all our wealth? And what, have the Starrs now grown bold enough to threaten me? Perhaps you don't mind losing the project down at the East End?"

Yvie was horrified and was in tears as she begged, "I'm sorry, Mr. White! I didn't mean to insult your daughter… this is only between us. Please don't tell my father, or he'll kill me…"

Dad snorted, but before he could say a word, Rosa strode up to him with a worried look. "Dad, I think we should send Claudia to the hospital for a full-body check-up, just in case."

I couldn't dodge in time and felt the burning gash on my stomach.Rosa, having just been released, was hardly the lofty heiress she once was.She looked just like a possessed demon with a knife in hand, plunging her knife into my stomach again."You wanted to die, didn't you?!" she raved maniacally. "I'm granting you your wish right now! Once you're dead, I'll be the White family's only daughter! They will definitely take me back!"Even as sweat flowed over my brow, I was gnashing my teeth from her stupidity. "You're brainless, aren't you? Get it straight—I am the rightful heiress of the White family! And you're where you are today because of your own doing!"And you want me dead? Sorry, but I refuse to die now that I'm rich!"With that, I pulled the entire knife out and kicked her in the chest. After all, Mom and Dad had made me hit the gym and learn self-defense for three years now, and I was no longer that loser I once was. When Rosa hit the floor, she scrambled to get up, b

With all the solid evidence stacking against Rosa, she was sentenced to three years in prison for attempted murder. She was bawling hysterically as the judge banged his gavel, demanding to see Mom and Dad.However, they were staying in my room, their eyes glued to me the whole time.I just opened my eyes when Mom held up a spoonful of steaming soup, blowing on it before holding it out to my lips. "Quick, drink it—I personally cooked this myself and tried it. It won't be salty."Dad was also cutting fruits carefully into tiny pieces, skewering each with toothpicks and feeding me. "Good girl. Have some fruit—you need the vitamins."Carl was also grinning from ear-to-ear when he saw me wake up and promptly called the doctor over to examine me.Everyone was sighing in relief when the doctor smiled and announced that all readings were normal, while I was actually surprised that they were so worried. The doctor then joked, "You must be a lucky charm to your family, with the way your p

There was an abrupt power outage in the evening.Although the backup generators would kick into gear soon after, Rosa still had minutes to sneak into my room while the cameras outside were off.Seeing me lay in bed, motionless, she was at once cursing. "Why did you have to come back and steal everything from me? You're a grown person—you can die out there too. You have no right to steal everyone's attention as soon as you show up!"She rushed up, clobbering and clawing me as she unleashed all her fury upon me.Then, as time started to run out, she grabbed a pillow and shoved it over my face, snarling, "Die! Once you're dead, no one will take anything away from me! Don't worry—since we're sisters, I'll bring flowers to your grave every year…"Even as she relished the thrill of it, the door suddenly opened.Carl rushed in, kicking her before she could react and sending her crashing against the wall. His eyes red in rage, he bellowed, "You animal! Our family has been kind to you

His eyes red, Carl was hysterical even as he finished, "And you're saying we should just leave her be?! That's no better than killing her!"Mom shuddered, and she grabbed Carl's arm in agitation. "What did you say?!"Carl took a deep breath and slammed a thick stack of documents on the table, his tears of guilt covering his face."Claudia went missing back then because of my negligence," he said. "That's why I owe it to her to find out how she had been living over the years and try to make amends… I didn't expect to find out how much she suffered! She lived like an animal even though she was adopted!"He was choking with tears as he flipped through the pages and read it out loud. "She was sold to a couple in a mountain village when she was three years old, and they worked her hard because they had to pay for her and because she wasn't a boy."When she was seven, her adoptive father learned about organ harvesting and how much money was involved. She caught wind of his plans to sell

The people nearby were screaming, "Someone fell!"Soon, they were gathered in a circle around me, leaving the entire hospital entrance congested.Mom and Dad were stunned, until Mom saw the bracelet on my wrist. Her knees buckled as she fell—it was her mother's bangle which she treasured so much that she never wore it.She also put it on my wrist last night…Scrambling over to me, she cradled me in her arms as she wailed, "No! Claudia, please! Stay with me! Help! Someone help my daughter!"While she almost fainted from crying, Dad was making calls and barking, "Get me the best doctors from the city right now!"With that, I was wheeled into the ER, while Dad stood outside, his eyes red as he punched the wall. "Why would Claudia jump for no reason? Were we too harsh?"Rosa was panicking from guilty, but she soon composed herself and said, "Maybe she's trying to make everyone listen with the real thing, because she was caught faking her suicide… We can't be fooled because of that.

Dad nodded. "Oh, that's right."With that, he and Mom rushed me to the hospital without delay, arranging for the most detailed VVIP examination. As the doctor stepped out, Mom was clawing his white coat as he asked, "Is my daughter alright? The last check-up indicated she has a bad heart…"The doctor flipped through the pages of the medical report and replied flatly, "She's fine. All readings are normal—she's perfectly healthy."Mom was left stumped, and she turned toward me as I lay motionless in bed. "Then why isn't she waking up?"The doctor adjusted his glasses as he chuckled coolly, "She's just playing dead. Kids these days always do that so that parents are more agreeable, and I'm sure it's the same for her."Mom was just about to call her a liar when I sat up slowly. "It's fine, Mom. I just can't be bothered to move."A deathly silence soon ensued.Suddenly, Rosa sniffled as she took out a private detective's report, hesitant as she spoke. "I don't know if I should menti
