Chapter 2

作者: Sway Sway
Rosa's eyes widened in shock, and she leaned close to my ear to whisper, "You really are something else. I've underestimated you… It's not surprising now that you made it back here after going missing for eighteen years…"

I blinked in confusion. What was she talking about?

I did feel like I would vomit the soup, but if I did, I'd have to wipe my mouth and rinse it.

It was too much trouble, so I swallowed.

Mom was watching me nervously. "I asked Mrs. King to cook that soup for you. What do you think?"

I wanted to put down my spoon already, but seeing Mom's twinkling eyes, I picked it up again.

If I said it was too salty, she'd make Mrs. King cook a new pot, and then she'd still be asking the same question.

Just thinking about the complicated process made me weary in spirit.

Whatever—I'd just have to finish it.

So I drank it, spoonful by spoonful, until I finished the whole bowl.

Clang!

As soon as it did, my spoon fell to the floor, and I soon collapsed in a heap too.

"Claudia! What happened?!" Mom was screaming again as she rushed to my side.

Dr. Harding didn't even have time to get changed as he ran back to the dining table, sweating all over his brow.

After examining me for a while, he quickly said, "Acute hypernatremia. She ingested too much salt… But it's fine. She just needs to drink plenty of water and take some time to recover."

Dad frowned as he blurted, "But that's impossible. We always keep condiments at a minimum for our food…"

He trailed off as he remembered something and reached for my spoon and licked it.

"It's so salty!" he exclaimed, smacking the table. "Who cooked this?!"

"I-It was me," Mrs. King stammered as she came forward. "B-But I tried it myself before I served it in the bowls. The flavor was right, but…"

She trailed off, pointing at Rosa. "I saw her reaching for the salt in the kitchen!"

However, even as everyone turned sharply toward Rosa, she said meekly, "I-I just added a spoonful since I thought she doesn't like plain food. Also, she could have just spit it out."

Mom was holding my pale cheeks, her tears falling. "Silly child. Why didn't you spit it out?"

Well, my worst fears had come true—I had to talk.

But even as my mind raced as I tried to come up with a sentence with the least number of words, Carl suddenly got the idea and bailed me out. "She must have felt uneasy and didn't want to hurt Mom's feelings."

That wasn't the whole truth, but I nodded in relief.

Mom pursed her lips, looking at me with guilt as she held me. "To make up for everything, I'll put together a grand homecoming party for you, so everyone knows that you're our daughter."

"Yes!" Rosa promptly pounced on the opportunity to volunteer. "I'll plan the party! It's going to be a big surprise!"

I couldn't dodge in time and felt the burning gash on my stomach.Rosa, having just been released, was hardly the lofty heiress she once was.She looked just like a possessed demon with a knife in hand, plunging her knife into my stomach again."You wanted to die, didn't you?!" she raved maniacally. "I'm granting you your wish right now! Once you're dead, I'll be the White family's only daughter! They will definitely take me back!"Even as sweat flowed over my brow, I was gnashing my teeth from her stupidity. "You're brainless, aren't you? Get it straight—I am the rightful heiress of the White family! And you're where you are today because of your own doing!"And you want me dead? Sorry, but I refuse to die now that I'm rich!"With that, I pulled the entire knife out and kicked her in the chest. After all, Mom and Dad had made me hit the gym and learn self-defense for three years now, and I was no longer that loser I once was. When Rosa hit the floor, she scrambled to get up, b

With all the solid evidence stacking against Rosa, she was sentenced to three years in prison for attempted murder. She was bawling hysterically as the judge banged his gavel, demanding to see Mom and Dad.However, they were staying in my room, their eyes glued to me the whole time.I just opened my eyes when Mom held up a spoonful of steaming soup, blowing on it before holding it out to my lips. "Quick, drink it—I personally cooked this myself and tried it. It won't be salty."Dad was also cutting fruits carefully into tiny pieces, skewering each with toothpicks and feeding me. "Good girl. Have some fruit—you need the vitamins."Carl was also grinning from ear-to-ear when he saw me wake up and promptly called the doctor over to examine me.Everyone was sighing in relief when the doctor smiled and announced that all readings were normal, while I was actually surprised that they were so worried. The doctor then joked, "You must be a lucky charm to your family, with the way your p

There was an abrupt power outage in the evening.Although the backup generators would kick into gear soon after, Rosa still had minutes to sneak into my room while the cameras outside were off.Seeing me lay in bed, motionless, she was at once cursing. "Why did you have to come back and steal everything from me? You're a grown person—you can die out there too. You have no right to steal everyone's attention as soon as you show up!"She rushed up, clobbering and clawing me as she unleashed all her fury upon me.Then, as time started to run out, she grabbed a pillow and shoved it over my face, snarling, "Die! Once you're dead, no one will take anything away from me! Don't worry—since we're sisters, I'll bring flowers to your grave every year…"Even as she relished the thrill of it, the door suddenly opened.Carl rushed in, kicking her before she could react and sending her crashing against the wall. His eyes red in rage, he bellowed, "You animal! Our family has been kind to you

His eyes red, Carl was hysterical even as he finished, "And you're saying we should just leave her be?! That's no better than killing her!"Mom shuddered, and she grabbed Carl's arm in agitation. "What did you say?!"Carl took a deep breath and slammed a thick stack of documents on the table, his tears of guilt covering his face."Claudia went missing back then because of my negligence," he said. "That's why I owe it to her to find out how she had been living over the years and try to make amends… I didn't expect to find out how much she suffered! She lived like an animal even though she was adopted!"He was choking with tears as he flipped through the pages and read it out loud. "She was sold to a couple in a mountain village when she was three years old, and they worked her hard because they had to pay for her and because she wasn't a boy."When she was seven, her adoptive father learned about organ harvesting and how much money was involved. She caught wind of his plans to sell

The people nearby were screaming, "Someone fell!"Soon, they were gathered in a circle around me, leaving the entire hospital entrance congested.Mom and Dad were stunned, until Mom saw the bracelet on my wrist. Her knees buckled as she fell—it was her mother's bangle which she treasured so much that she never wore it.She also put it on my wrist last night…Scrambling over to me, she cradled me in her arms as she wailed, "No! Claudia, please! Stay with me! Help! Someone help my daughter!"While she almost fainted from crying, Dad was making calls and barking, "Get me the best doctors from the city right now!"With that, I was wheeled into the ER, while Dad stood outside, his eyes red as he punched the wall. "Why would Claudia jump for no reason? Were we too harsh?"Rosa was panicking from guilty, but she soon composed herself and said, "Maybe she's trying to make everyone listen with the real thing, because she was caught faking her suicide… We can't be fooled because of that.

Dad nodded. "Oh, that's right."With that, he and Mom rushed me to the hospital without delay, arranging for the most detailed VVIP examination. As the doctor stepped out, Mom was clawing his white coat as he asked, "Is my daughter alright? The last check-up indicated she has a bad heart…"The doctor flipped through the pages of the medical report and replied flatly, "She's fine. All readings are normal—she's perfectly healthy."Mom was left stumped, and she turned toward me as I lay motionless in bed. "Then why isn't she waking up?"The doctor adjusted his glasses as he chuckled coolly, "She's just playing dead. Kids these days always do that so that parents are more agreeable, and I'm sure it's the same for her."Mom was just about to call her a liar when I sat up slowly. "It's fine, Mom. I just can't be bothered to move."A deathly silence soon ensued.Suddenly, Rosa sniffled as she took out a private detective's report, hesitant as she spoke. "I don't know if I should menti
