Chapter 4

Author: Calliope
A piercing pain shot through my bones, and I couldn't suppress a muffled groan as I struggled desperately.

The other two girls yanked my backpack away and hurled it into a puddle of filthy water.

The rosary Zachary had prayed over for me tumbled onto the steps. One of the girls raised her foot and stomped on it, snapping the cross.

The sight of the broken rosary sent a sharp pain through my heart, and my eyes instantly reddened. "Don't touch my things!"

I twisted and fought with all my strength, but they were too strong. They pinned me firmly against the wall, and I couldn't move.

Cassie bent down and picked up the broken rosary. "So what if I did?"

She casually tossed it into a mop bucket filled with filthy water, then fixed me with a sinister glare. "Some worthless piece of junk from the country, and your family treats it like a treasure? Valerie, do you really think a few good grades mean you can get above me?"

She stepped forward, grabbed my long hair, and violently yanked my head back.

I had no choice but to look up at her malicious face as searing pain tore across my scalp.

She shoved me by the shoulder and slowly dragged me toward the window. The sharp, rusted metal edge of the windowsill drew closer and closer to my head.

Another half step, and my head would probably slam straight into that jagged edge.

Despair swept over me. My limbs went weak, and my entire body began to tremble uncontrollably.

Tears burned my eyes as I shouted at her, "Cassie, I've never done anything to you. We have no grudge against each other, so why do you keep bullying me?"

At my accusation, the spite on Cassie's face gave way to intense jealousy.

She gritted her teeth and finally revealed what she'd really been planning. "No grudge? There's only one guaranteed spot at Kingsley University, and it was supposed to be mine! Do you really think I'd let you take first place and get it?"

Her anger intensified. She dug her fingernail into my shoulder so hard that it nearly broke the skin. "You're just some country bumpkin. What gives you the right to compete with me for an opportunity that was supposed to be mine?

"I've had the best resources and connections my entire life. That guaranteed admission spot can only be mine!

"I just need to get rid of you, my competition, and make sure you lose your chance at that spot!"

I froze. So all those public humiliations had happened simply because she'd assumed I would steal her guaranteed admission spot.

I had never even dreamed of getting something like that. All I had wanted was to study quietly and mind my own business.

The girls behind me continued to shove me until the back of my head pressed against the cold, sharp edge of the windowsill.

A deathly fear seized me. I trembled as I felt inside my school uniform pocket until my fingers found my phone. I frantically swiped across the screen and dialed Zachary's number.

The call connected, and Zachary's calm, gentle voice immediately came through. "Valerie, why are you calling me at this time?"

Hot tears streamed down my face. I was about to cry out for help when Cassie suddenly grabbed my wrist.

With tremendous force, she ripped the phone from my hand, raised her arm high, and slammed it against the hard concrete steps.

The deafening crack of shattering glass echoed through the empty stairwell.

The phone bounced into the murky puddle, its screen fractured into a dense web of cracks. Pieces of the casing and internal components broke loose and scattered across the wet concrete.

I held the keys to my apartment and stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, gazing out at Westhaven's glittering skyline.Suddenly, I laughed. The universe's musings had thrown me into a remote village, only to drag me back out and toss me into a world I'd never have dared to dream of.I'd been stepped on, slapped, humiliated, and nearly had my head smashed open. But every fall I'd taken had eventually become another step that carried me higher. And this time, courtesy of my family, a thick cushion was waiting to catch me if I fell.…A year later, at my graduation ceremony, I stood on the auditorium stage in my custom-made cap and gown and accepted the Outstanding Graduate Award from the principal.Thunderous applause filled the auditorium. My parents and three brothers sat in the center of the front row.My mother wiped away tears with a tissue. My father looked like the proudest father in the world. Zachary smiled as he applauded. Tyler held up his phone to record everyth

"Miss Miller..." Richard rubbed his hands together and practically bent at the waist. "I failed to raise my daughter properly. Cassie is young and didn't know any better. I hope you'll be the bigger person..."Cassie stood behind her father with red-rimmed eyes, without a trace of yesterday's arrogance. Her lips moved several times before she finally managed to mumble, "I'm sorry."Then tears streamed down her face.I looked at the father and daughter and suddenly felt completely calm.I recalled the terror I'd felt when they had pinned me against the windowsill yesterday. I remembered the despair that had consumed me when they had stomped on my rosary. I thought about the contempt in her eyes when she had torn my exam paper to pieces in front of everyone. If I had really been a poor student from the countryside with no one to rely on, what would my fate be right now? Expelled? Sent back to the village? Or beaten so badly that I'd spend the rest of my life in a hospital? But I wa

My mother linked her arm through my father's and took my hand with her free hand.Behind us, Zachary and Tyler stepped out of the second car at the same time. The last vehicle was Caleb's private van. The moment its door opened, the screams from the fans gathered behind the barricades nearly blew the roof off.The dean hurried over to greet us, his forehead even more heavily beaded with sweat than it had been yesterday. "Mr. Miller... What brings you here in person? We should've been there to welcome you..."My father ignored him and looked at me. "Valerie, which way is your classroom?"I pointed toward the school building. Our group slowly crossed the school grounds under the watchful eyes of every student and teacher.Cassie stood behind the railing in the second-floor hallway, her face as pale as a sheet. The girls who'd followed her yesterday had long since disappeared.Once we entered the classroom, my mother glanced around and immediately spotted Cassie at her desk. She r

"Just tell your father that the partnership is terminated. From now on, the Miller Group will have no business dealings with the Nolans," Zachary said flatly.…That night, the atmosphere in the Miller household was as cold as a frozen tundra. My father sat in his study with three computers open in front of him, their screens filled with dense rows of documents and data.He stared at me for a long moment before his eyes suddenly reddened and he broke down in tears. "Valerie, you've been through so much."I sat across from him with a cup of warm milk clasped between my hands. My fingertips were still a little cold. "I'm sorry, Dad... I didn't want to cause you any trouble."My father set down his pen and walked over to me. He crouched in front of me and looked into my eyes. "Trouble? You're the daughter I've spent 16 years searching for."We owe you 16 years of protection, 16 years of companionship, and 16 years of the life you should've had."Someone dared lay a hand on you rig

In the light spilling through the stairwell entrance, Valerie's three brothers stood side by side. The man at the front was tall and lean, dressed in an immaculate suit. Behind his gold-rimmed glasses, his eyes were cold enough to freeze. His gaze swept over me, pinned against the wall, then dropped to the broken rosary on the floor before finally settling on the hand still clutching Valerie's collar."It's you?" Zachary's voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the air like an ice-cold blade. "Let go."Cassie froze. Of course she knew who he was. Who didn't know Zachary?Just last month, her father, Richard Nolan, had practically groveled over drinks as he toasted the eldest son of the Miller family. But now Zachary was standing here, claiming this country girl was his sister. She immediately let go.-Tyler took two strides forward and placed one hand on my shoulder. With the other, he gently brushed the disheveled strands of hair from my forehead. When he saw the faint handp

The call abruptly disconnected.Cassie stepped on my ruined phone and ground it beneath her shoe several times.A cold, cruel smile curled across her lips. "You still think you can call someone for help? Who do you think can save you? You're just a country girl. Who could you possibly call?"I suddenly remembered what my brothers had told me. They'd said no one in Westhaven would dare bully a Miller, much less lay a hand on me.In my panic, I blurted out, "I'm a Miller. My dad is Nathan Miller, and my oldest brother is Zachary Miller..."The girls burst into laughter as if they'd just heard the funniest joke in the world."Valerie, do you think we're as stupid as you are? Just because your last name is Miller, you think Nathan Miller is your dad?""Wake up! A real heiress wouldn't look like you. Your dad's probably still shoveling manure back in your village!"Cassie laughed even harder. "Give me a break, Valerie. You really think I'm going to believe you?"Nathan Miller is th
