Chapter 2

Autor: Existence
I hailed a cab to Clive's company the next morning. When I pushed the doors open, nothing inside the building suggested that the company was facing a core data leak.

The receptionist was blowing balloons at the front desk. The meeting room was packed with champagne and fresh flowers, looking like it had been decorated for a celebration party.

Clive's business partner, Kieran Hudson, wasn't at his workstation. A new employee who didn't know who I was walked past me while clutching a stack of materials. He mistakenly assumed that I was from another department, saying, "Why are you just standing there? Hurry and help.

"Ms. Shore just returned from abroad, but she already secured a huge investment for the company. It only makes sense that Mr. York has to personally go on a trip with her so she can unwind. I heard they've known each other since college. How romantic!"

I continued making my way into the office area. There was a notice board at the end of the hallway. Someone had added a new photo to the board.

Clive was dressed in a tailored suit. A woman in a red dress was next to him as they stood in the middle of the press conference. There was a caption under the photo.

"A Reunion Between Friends of Ten Years. A Continuation of Their Original Dreams of Entrepreneurship."

The woman's name was Tara Shore. However, I had never heard Clive mention her name.

I pulled out my phone. I had just snapped a picture of the photo on the notice board when I heard a set of frantic footsteps behind me.

"Elise! What are you doing here?" Kieran exclaimed as he ran over to me, sweating profusely.

He placed himself between me and the board before fixing a stiff smile on his face. "Clive said that you were resting at home. It's a complete mess at the company—"

"Who's Tara Shore?" I asked while staring at him.

Kieran swallowed before answering, "She… She's a representative for the investors. Don't misunderstand, Elise. The company didn't announce the data leak so as not to scare the employees. The executives are still figuring out the best way to deal with the issue.

"Even the director of the tech department doesn't know about the leak."

I turned my phone screen toward him, showing him the photo that he had posted in the group chat last night. "Is that why you felt the need to use a photo that was from a month ago to lie to me?"

Kieran's expression stiffened. He couldn't say a single word.

Just then, the company's doors were thrown open. Clive strode in. His expression shifted slightly when he spotted me. Meanwhile, I immediately noticed the glaring light red mark that was peeking out from behind his collar.

Kieran looked as if he had seen his savior. He hurriedly explained to Clive that I was misunderstanding his relationship with Tara.

Clive grabbed my wrist and dragged me into his office. "You're in my company, Elise Jenson. This isn't a place for you to track down your husband's whereabouts."

The corners of my lips curled up into a frosty smile. "If I didn't try to track you down, I would have missed how my husband was enjoying a candlelight dinner with another woman in an extravagant underwater suite!"

Clive was stunned. A crack finally appeared on his mask.

Shockingly, he started criticizing me. "I didn't tell you precisely because I was worried that you would make a fuss. Tara is just an investor. The underwater suite was to meet the standard that was set by the client. I was only talking business to her. Can't you be a little more understanding?"

"Talking business? Why did she have to wear the bracelet that I prepared?" I demanded, swatting his hand away.

A hint of panic flickered in Clive's eyes, but he quickly suppressed it. "That bracelet just so happened to be in my bag. Tara caught a glimpse of it and thought that it looked good. I just let her borrow it temporarily to take a photo."

He tugged on his tie before continuing, "Do you have to ruin all my hard work just because of a piece of jewelry?"

Clive still thought that the bracelet was the main issue.

I didn't bother arguing with him, turning around and preparing to leave. Just as I turned around, my gaze swept across Clive's desk. There was a black and gold hotel room cardholder under a pile of messy documents.

I recognized Clive's handwriting on the back of the cardholder.

"Making up for the ten years and underwater dinner that I owe you."

Clive sold the two properties and sports car that were under his name to fill in the holes in the company's finances. He also transferred the assets that rightfully belonged to me to my account without missing a single penny. He also sent Freya back to her hometown, thoroughly getting rid of everyone and everything around him that made me unhappy. On the day before the divorce was going to be finalized, Clive waited for me outside my company while holding a velvet box. A top-of-the-line five-carat diamond ring was nestled inside. It was even bigger and shinier than the one that he had promised to buy for me.He drew the attention of the people around us when he got down on one knee. "I've gotten rid of all the obstacles, Elise. Tara is gone, and the company is also back on the right track."He looked up at me, his eyes shining with humility and hope. "Can you please give me another chance? Let's start over. I'll listen to everything that you say this time. We can go to Crystalin an

Three days later, Clive received a divorce agreement at his company, along with an assets protection notice from the court.I didn't hold back at all, telling my lawyer to freeze all of Clive's bank accounts and company shares that were listed as marital assets.Clive burst into my apartment at 2:00 pm. His eyes were bloodshot as he clutched the divorce agreement. His tailored suit was covered in wrinkles."How dare you hire a lawyer to investigate my finances, Elise? Do you truly not care about our relationship anymore?" he demanded hoarsely, throwing the agreement on the coffee table.I sat on the couch and took a sip of my coffee. "Did you ever stop to consider our relationship when you spent a small fortune to book that underwater suite for Tara behind my back?""I already told you that I did that for the sake of the investment!" he yelled, running his hands through his hair roughly with a pained expression."The investors are beginning to notice that the company's accounts h

Five days had passed since the divorce agreement was delivered to Clive, but he still hadn't signed it. Instead, he told his assistant to send me flowers, booked meals for us, and even bought a new pair of flight tickets to Crystalin.I rejected everything.I returned home on Friday afternoon to pick up one last identification document. When I opened the door, I saw Tara sitting in the living room. She was wearing my slippers, and my cup was placed in front of her.Clive was on the phone with someone as he stood on the balcony. He immediately hung up when he spotted me, saying, "Tara's hotel had a data leak of its guests' information. It wasn't safe for her, so I let her stay in the guest room for now."He spoke naturally as if we weren't currently in the middle of getting a divorce."Clive told me that you weren't going to come back for the time being, Elise," Tara said, rising to her feet. "I'm only staying for two nights.""This is our marital home," I said, looking at Clive.

I temporarily moved into an empty room in my friend's apartment. The next day, my lawyer sent a divorce agreement to Clive, but he didn't reply. Instead, Tara asked me to meet her in the afternoon.Tara had removed the silver aurora bracelet when I met her at a cafe. There was only a faint indent around her wrist."Clive told me to give this back to you," she said, pushing the jewelry box toward me."This was supposed to be for him," I said, refusing to accept the box. "It doesn't belong to me.""Are you really going to divorce him?" Tara asked, smiling."That's none of your business.""Of course, it is."Tara picked up her coffee. Gone was the innocent expression that she always wore around Clive. "I've known him for ten years, Elise. We created our first model together, slept in the lab together, and made a wish together to have a celebration in an underwater hotel once our company succeeded.""Is that why you came back to take his things from him?""I'm just taking back wh

"You want to get a divorce just because of a trip and an assets transfer agreement?" Clive exclaimed. "Do you even understand what you're saying?"He ran out of the private room and chased after me, stopping me right in front of the elevator by grabbing my wrist. His grip was extremely strong. I couldn't free myself even after trying to pry his fingers off me twice.Freya's indignant voice resounded from the private room, "Just let her go! Let's see how she's going to survive once she leaves you. She'll probably come crawling back to you within a few days, begging you to take her back!""Don't forget the hotel, the bracelet, and the fake photo," I said."I already gave you explanations for those," Clive retorted."Repeating your lies doesn't count as an explanation."The elevator doors slid open. When the people inside looked at us, Clive loosened his hold on me. He lowered his voice and hissed, "Tara just came back to the country. She's the only one the investors trust. Transf

I couldn't help but feel how absurd the entire situation was as I stared at Tara's name. From the underwater suite to the jewelry that cost 38,000 dollars to this equity transfer agreement. Clive completely dismantled our third wedding anniversary celebration to compensate Tara's "ten years" and secure her investments. He even wanted me to relinquish my rights to the company's shares with my own hands."So, the get-together today wasn't actually for you to explain what happened with the underwater suite. It also wasn't for you to explain the fake photo," I said.I looked up and swept my gaze across the four people seated around the table, taking in their different expressions. "Instead, it was to convince me to willingly give up my marital assets and give them to your friend that you've known for ten years?""You're making it sound way worse than it actually is, Elise," Clive retorted with a frown. "This is just part of the investment betting agreement. "Tara needs proof of the
