Chapter 3

Autor: Existence
I made my way to the study after I returned home and found Clive's competition details during his college days in the last drawer of a cabinet. There were two names written on the yellowed project proposal—Clive York and Tara Shore.

Using Tara's name, I managed to track down a post about them on the college forum on Clive's old computer. It turned out that they had been a well-known college couple at the time. They had also joined an entrepreneurship competition together.

The core concept of Clive's current company had come from that competition. It was just that their project had failed at the time, leaving Clive with a mountain of debt. Meanwhile, Tara didn't hesitate to fly across the ocean to another country after she received an acceptance letter from a famous overseas college.

I was the one who was by Clive's side when he was at his lowest. Now that he had succeeded, the person who was conveniently absent when he was going through a hard time wanted to return to share his glory.

…

The door unlocked at 8:00 pm. When Clive pushed the door open, I saw Tara trailing behind him.

It was our first time meeting each other. She was wearing that red dress, and her makeup was exquisite. She was also carrying a suitcase.

"Tara doesn't have anywhere to store her suitcase for now, Elise, so she'll be leaving it in our home for a few days," Clive explained as he changed his shoes. "She's also here to pick up an investment document that was left behind."

Tara brushed past Clive and stood before me.

"Sorry for the trouble, Elise," she said with a smile. "Clive said that you're very understanding and that you definitely won't mind."

She seemed oblivious to the way that I frowned upon hearing her words, walking past me to sit in the living room.

Clive stuck by her side the entire time, completely ignoring how upset I was.

Tara made her way to the study and pulled open the third drawer as if she had done it a thousand times. "As I thought, your college yearbook is still here, Clive."

She opened the fridge and pointed at a wine bottle that was stashed at the very back, saying, "I can't believe you still have that graduation gift. I thought you drank it a long time ago."

Although Tara's tone was always polite and courteous when she addressed me, everything else that she did was clearly her way of telling me that she knew Clive's past better than I did—that she was the true lady of the house.

When she walked over to the dining table, she noticed the Crystalin vacation guidebook that I had left on the table. She pretended to be apologetic as she looked at Clive and said, "Oh, were the two of you planning to go to Crystalin?

"I wouldn't have been so stubborn if I had known. I wouldn't have insisted that you fulfill the promise that you made to me during our college days to have an underwater dinner. Please don't be mad at Clive, Elise."

Clive immediately frowned and interrupted her, saying, "We were just talking business. Don't say it like that. You're going to cause a misunderstanding."

"That's right. We were just talking business," Tara said with a smile.

When she lifted her hand to fix her hair, her sleeve slid down, revealing the silver aurora bracelet around her wrist.

I stared at the bracelet before approaching her and extending my hand. "Give the bracelet back to me."

Tara was stunned before she reflexively hid behind Clive.

Clive shielded her behind him. He shot a disgruntled look at me and said, "What do you think you're doing, Elise? It's just a bracelet. Tara likes it a lot. I'll buy you another one that's even more expensive if you care about it that much."

"You can't buy it," I said as I stared into Clive's eyes. "I spent a month designing that bracelet. I was going to give it to you as our third wedding anniversary gift."

Clive stiffened as a flurry of complicated emotions flickered in his eyes.

Meanwhile, Tara immediately took off the bracelet and placed it on the table. Her eyes were slightly reddened as she said, "I'm sorry, Elise. I had no idea. I thought Clive bought it. Please don't fight with each other because of me."

She behaved as if she were the one who was the most hurt in the situation.

As Clive took in her reddened eyes, his sympathy for her immediately overshadowed the regret that he felt toward me. He shot an irritated look at me before pulling Tara along with him, saying, "I'll see you off."

A few moments later, I received a call from Clive's mother, Freya Ashlocke.

"Did you give Tara a hard time today, Elise?" she snapped. "Tara only came back to help Clive secure more investments. She nearly became my daughter-in-law. You wouldn't even have a chance to be with Clive if she didn't leave the country. Can't you treat her with a little more courtesy?"

I couldn't help but feel how absurd the entire situation was as I gripped my phone. It turned out that Freya also knew that Tara was coming back. In our family, I was the only one who had been kept in the dark to be treated as a laughingstock.

Clive sold the two properties and sports car that were under his name to fill in the holes in the company's finances. He also transferred the assets that rightfully belonged to me to my account without missing a single penny. He also sent Freya back to her hometown, thoroughly getting rid of everyone and everything around him that made me unhappy. On the day before the divorce was going to be finalized, Clive waited for me outside my company while holding a velvet box. A top-of-the-line five-carat diamond ring was nestled inside. It was even bigger and shinier than the one that he had promised to buy for me.He drew the attention of the people around us when he got down on one knee. "I've gotten rid of all the obstacles, Elise. Tara is gone, and the company is also back on the right track."He looked up at me, his eyes shining with humility and hope. "Can you please give me another chance? Let's start over. I'll listen to everything that you say this time. We can go to Crystalin an

Three days later, Clive received a divorce agreement at his company, along with an assets protection notice from the court.I didn't hold back at all, telling my lawyer to freeze all of Clive's bank accounts and company shares that were listed as marital assets.Clive burst into my apartment at 2:00 pm. His eyes were bloodshot as he clutched the divorce agreement. His tailored suit was covered in wrinkles."How dare you hire a lawyer to investigate my finances, Elise? Do you truly not care about our relationship anymore?" he demanded hoarsely, throwing the agreement on the coffee table.I sat on the couch and took a sip of my coffee. "Did you ever stop to consider our relationship when you spent a small fortune to book that underwater suite for Tara behind my back?""I already told you that I did that for the sake of the investment!" he yelled, running his hands through his hair roughly with a pained expression."The investors are beginning to notice that the company's accounts h

Five days had passed since the divorce agreement was delivered to Clive, but he still hadn't signed it. Instead, he told his assistant to send me flowers, booked meals for us, and even bought a new pair of flight tickets to Crystalin.I rejected everything.I returned home on Friday afternoon to pick up one last identification document. When I opened the door, I saw Tara sitting in the living room. She was wearing my slippers, and my cup was placed in front of her.Clive was on the phone with someone as he stood on the balcony. He immediately hung up when he spotted me, saying, "Tara's hotel had a data leak of its guests' information. It wasn't safe for her, so I let her stay in the guest room for now."He spoke naturally as if we weren't currently in the middle of getting a divorce."Clive told me that you weren't going to come back for the time being, Elise," Tara said, rising to her feet. "I'm only staying for two nights.""This is our marital home," I said, looking at Clive.

I temporarily moved into an empty room in my friend's apartment. The next day, my lawyer sent a divorce agreement to Clive, but he didn't reply. Instead, Tara asked me to meet her in the afternoon.Tara had removed the silver aurora bracelet when I met her at a cafe. There was only a faint indent around her wrist."Clive told me to give this back to you," she said, pushing the jewelry box toward me."This was supposed to be for him," I said, refusing to accept the box. "It doesn't belong to me.""Are you really going to divorce him?" Tara asked, smiling."That's none of your business.""Of course, it is."Tara picked up her coffee. Gone was the innocent expression that she always wore around Clive. "I've known him for ten years, Elise. We created our first model together, slept in the lab together, and made a wish together to have a celebration in an underwater hotel once our company succeeded.""Is that why you came back to take his things from him?""I'm just taking back wh

"You want to get a divorce just because of a trip and an assets transfer agreement?" Clive exclaimed. "Do you even understand what you're saying?"He ran out of the private room and chased after me, stopping me right in front of the elevator by grabbing my wrist. His grip was extremely strong. I couldn't free myself even after trying to pry his fingers off me twice.Freya's indignant voice resounded from the private room, "Just let her go! Let's see how she's going to survive once she leaves you. She'll probably come crawling back to you within a few days, begging you to take her back!""Don't forget the hotel, the bracelet, and the fake photo," I said."I already gave you explanations for those," Clive retorted."Repeating your lies doesn't count as an explanation."The elevator doors slid open. When the people inside looked at us, Clive loosened his hold on me. He lowered his voice and hissed, "Tara just came back to the country. She's the only one the investors trust. Transf

I couldn't help but feel how absurd the entire situation was as I stared at Tara's name. From the underwater suite to the jewelry that cost 38,000 dollars to this equity transfer agreement. Clive completely dismantled our third wedding anniversary celebration to compensate Tara's "ten years" and secure her investments. He even wanted me to relinquish my rights to the company's shares with my own hands."So, the get-together today wasn't actually for you to explain what happened with the underwater suite. It also wasn't for you to explain the fake photo," I said.I looked up and swept my gaze across the four people seated around the table, taking in their different expressions. "Instead, it was to convince me to willingly give up my marital assets and give them to your friend that you've known for ten years?""You're making it sound way worse than it actually is, Elise," Clive retorted with a frown. "This is just part of the investment betting agreement. "Tara needs proof of the
