Chapter 4

Author: Existence
Two days later, Freya booked a private room and hosted a family get-together. She sent me a message.

"Clive's been under a lot of stress recently. Let's have dinner together tonight and clear up any misunderstandings so we can have a peaceful and harmonious life moving forward."

I didn't expect to see Tara there when I pushed the private room door open. Not only that, but she was sitting next to Clive, too.

Freya was all smiles as she held Tara's hand and pinned a beautiful emerald brooch to her shirt. "This belonged to Clive's grandmother, Tara. I've been keeping it safe for you. Don't forget to drop by the house often now that you're back."

I remembered praising the brooch, saying that it was beautiful when I laid eyes on it for the first time during the first year of my marriage to Clive. Freya had coldly told me that it was a family heirloom, warning me to refrain from touching it without permission.

And yet, now she was giving it to another woman right before my eyes.

After dinner was served, Clive, Kieran, and Tara were constantly discussing the details of their finances. No one paid any attention to me. I quietly drank my coffee, waiting for them to wrap up their discussion. When they were about done, I placed the cup down and looked at Kieran.

"Kieran, you mentioned that the company had a core data leak three days ago. Has the crisis been dealt with?"

The air around the table froze.

Kieran let out a dry laugh before saying, "Everything's been dealt with, Elise. It was just a false alarm."

I pulled out a printed record of a system's backend operations from my bag and placed it in front of him. "I looked through the backend records. Three days ago, there weren't any anomalies in the company's servers. Not even once. Your so-called core data leak never existed from the very beginning."

A deathly silence descended upon the private room.

Clive's expression darkened.

Meanwhile, Kieran wiped the sweat from his forehead before ultimately deciding to come clean. "It's true that I used an old photo, Elise, but Clive was just worried that you would overthink things!

"It was rare for Tara to be back in the country. On top of that, it was her birthday too. So what if Clive accompanied her for a night? Did you have to make a mountain out of a molehill and check the company's backend records?"

Freya also chimed in to support Kieran, "Would you have allowed Clive to celebrate Tara's birthday if you had known the truth? Since you refuse to tolerate others, what's wrong with Clive keeping the truth from you out of the goodness of his heart for the sake of the harmony of this family?"

"So, everyone knew that she was coming back," I said, turning to look at Clive. "Everyone knew that you were going to celebrate her birthday with her, but I was the only one who was kept in the dark."

There wasn't even a hint of remorse on Clive's face. On the contrary, there was an impatient look in his eyes when he snapped, "Do you have to cause such a fuss, Elise? I already told you that Tara's just an investor. She worked herself to the bone to secure funding for the company.

"The underwater hotel was just something that she didn't get to experience when she was in college. I accompanied her to pay her back for everything that she did for me. It doesn't mean that I'm going to abandon our family!"

"Stop it, Clive," Tara said, tugging on Clive's sleeve lightly and looking down. "It's all my fault. I shouldn't have come back."

Freya impatiently rapped her knuckles against the table, cutting her off before she could say more.

"That's enough. You don't have to transfer the 10,000 dollars that Clive gave you back to him. Just treat it as his compensation to you for not being able to go to Crystalin.

"Since everyone's here today, we can put all of this behind us once you sign this document," Freya said, shooting a look at Clive.

Clive remained silent for a few moments before he took out a document and pushed it toward me.

"What is this?" I asked.

"The company's going to go through an equity restructuring soon," Clive said a little stiffly, averting his gaze. "You need to sign this and waive your right as my spouse to co-ownership for a part of the shares."

I picked up the document and flipped to the last page. Tara's name was clearly printed in the section that named the new owner of the shares.

Clive sold the two properties and sports car that were under his name to fill in the holes in the company's finances. He also transferred the assets that rightfully belonged to me to my account without missing a single penny. He also sent Freya back to her hometown, thoroughly getting rid of everyone and everything around him that made me unhappy. On the day before the divorce was going to be finalized, Clive waited for me outside my company while holding a velvet box. A top-of-the-line five-carat diamond ring was nestled inside. It was even bigger and shinier than the one that he had promised to buy for me.He drew the attention of the people around us when he got down on one knee. "I've gotten rid of all the obstacles, Elise. Tara is gone, and the company is also back on the right track."He looked up at me, his eyes shining with humility and hope. "Can you please give me another chance? Let's start over. I'll listen to everything that you say this time. We can go to Crystalin an

Three days later, Clive received a divorce agreement at his company, along with an assets protection notice from the court.I didn't hold back at all, telling my lawyer to freeze all of Clive's bank accounts and company shares that were listed as marital assets.Clive burst into my apartment at 2:00 pm. His eyes were bloodshot as he clutched the divorce agreement. His tailored suit was covered in wrinkles."How dare you hire a lawyer to investigate my finances, Elise? Do you truly not care about our relationship anymore?" he demanded hoarsely, throwing the agreement on the coffee table.I sat on the couch and took a sip of my coffee. "Did you ever stop to consider our relationship when you spent a small fortune to book that underwater suite for Tara behind my back?""I already told you that I did that for the sake of the investment!" he yelled, running his hands through his hair roughly with a pained expression."The investors are beginning to notice that the company's accounts h

Five days had passed since the divorce agreement was delivered to Clive, but he still hadn't signed it. Instead, he told his assistant to send me flowers, booked meals for us, and even bought a new pair of flight tickets to Crystalin.I rejected everything.I returned home on Friday afternoon to pick up one last identification document. When I opened the door, I saw Tara sitting in the living room. She was wearing my slippers, and my cup was placed in front of her.Clive was on the phone with someone as he stood on the balcony. He immediately hung up when he spotted me, saying, "Tara's hotel had a data leak of its guests' information. It wasn't safe for her, so I let her stay in the guest room for now."He spoke naturally as if we weren't currently in the middle of getting a divorce."Clive told me that you weren't going to come back for the time being, Elise," Tara said, rising to her feet. "I'm only staying for two nights.""This is our marital home," I said, looking at Clive.

I temporarily moved into an empty room in my friend's apartment. The next day, my lawyer sent a divorce agreement to Clive, but he didn't reply. Instead, Tara asked me to meet her in the afternoon.Tara had removed the silver aurora bracelet when I met her at a cafe. There was only a faint indent around her wrist."Clive told me to give this back to you," she said, pushing the jewelry box toward me."This was supposed to be for him," I said, refusing to accept the box. "It doesn't belong to me.""Are you really going to divorce him?" Tara asked, smiling."That's none of your business.""Of course, it is."Tara picked up her coffee. Gone was the innocent expression that she always wore around Clive. "I've known him for ten years, Elise. We created our first model together, slept in the lab together, and made a wish together to have a celebration in an underwater hotel once our company succeeded.""Is that why you came back to take his things from him?""I'm just taking back wh

"You want to get a divorce just because of a trip and an assets transfer agreement?" Clive exclaimed. "Do you even understand what you're saying?"He ran out of the private room and chased after me, stopping me right in front of the elevator by grabbing my wrist. His grip was extremely strong. I couldn't free myself even after trying to pry his fingers off me twice.Freya's indignant voice resounded from the private room, "Just let her go! Let's see how she's going to survive once she leaves you. She'll probably come crawling back to you within a few days, begging you to take her back!""Don't forget the hotel, the bracelet, and the fake photo," I said."I already gave you explanations for those," Clive retorted."Repeating your lies doesn't count as an explanation."The elevator doors slid open. When the people inside looked at us, Clive loosened his hold on me. He lowered his voice and hissed, "Tara just came back to the country. She's the only one the investors trust. Transf

I couldn't help but feel how absurd the entire situation was as I stared at Tara's name. From the underwater suite to the jewelry that cost 38,000 dollars to this equity transfer agreement. Clive completely dismantled our third wedding anniversary celebration to compensate Tara's "ten years" and secure her investments. He even wanted me to relinquish my rights to the company's shares with my own hands."So, the get-together today wasn't actually for you to explain what happened with the underwater suite. It also wasn't for you to explain the fake photo," I said.I looked up and swept my gaze across the four people seated around the table, taking in their different expressions. "Instead, it was to convince me to willingly give up my marital assets and give them to your friend that you've known for ten years?""You're making it sound way worse than it actually is, Elise," Clive retorted with a frown. "This is just part of the investment betting agreement. "Tara needs proof of the
