Chapter Two: The Feeling She Could Never Name

Eighteen years later...

Seattle, Washington. Present Day.

Mariah Marcus had a good life.

She knew it the way you know something you've been told enough times that it becomes true before you finish checking. Good house. Good parents. Good grades. A best friend who picked up on the second ring and showed up with coffee before Mariah finished explaining why she needed it.

She had no reason to feel like something was missing.

But she felt it anyway.

Not sadness. Not loneliness. Something quieter, a hollow just beneath her ribs that had been there for as long as she could remember. She had stopped trying to explain it. She had stopped trying to fill it.

She had just learned to live slightly to the left of it.

~ ~ ~

It was a Tuesday in October when she first heard his name.

She was on her bed avoiding an essay, clicking through videos she wasn't really watching, when she stumbled into the comments section of a video about loss. Not a dramatic loss. The quiet kind. The kind that doesn't have a funeral.

Someone had written:

“Some people spend their whole lives missing something they never knew they had. Not grief exactly. More like an echo of something that should have been there.”

Mariah stared at that sentence until the words stopped looking like words.

Then she typed before she could stop herself.

“I've been trying to find words for that exact feeling my whole life.”

She posted it and immediately felt foolish. It was the internet. Nobody replied to things like that.

Her phone buzzed three minutes later.

“Then you've been carrying it alone for too long.” A.Donalds

She clicked the profile. Anthony Donalds. Portland. No photo. Just a grey circle and a handful of comments scattered across different videos, all of them the kind of thing someone writes when they've thought carefully before speaking.

She typed back.

“How do you grieve for something you can't even name?”

His reply came in under two minutes.

“You start by admitting it's real. Most people never get that far.”

Mariah read that twice. Then she closed her essay without saving it, pulled her knees to her chest, and kept typing.

~ ~ ~

They talked for four hours that first night.

Not about big things. About the small ones that are actually the biggest, the specific feeling of being in a room full of people and still feeling like you arrived from somewhere else. The exhaustion of being fine. The strange guilt of wanting more when your life already looks like enough.

He understood everything she said before she finished saying it.

That should have felt strange. It didn't. It felt like something clicking into place so quietly she almost missed it.

Around midnight she typed.

“Do you ever feel like you were supposed to know someone and the universe just got the timing wrong?”

Three seconds passed.

“Every single day of my life,” he wrote back. “Until tonight.”

Mariah set her phone down on her chest and stared at the ceiling.

The hollow beneath her ribs, the one that had been there her whole life had gone quiet.

She didn't know what to do with that. So she picked her phone back up and kept talking.

~ ~ ~

She told Zara on Saturday morning over coffee.

Zara set her mug down with the careful precision of someone exercising enormous self-control.

"His name."

"Anthony."

"Last name."

"Donalds. He's from Portland."

"And you've been talking to him every night for how long?"

"Four days."

Zara stared at her. "Mariah. You don't talk to “me” every night."

"You don't listen the way he does."

Zara pointed at her. "That is the most terrifying thing you've ever said and I need you to understand that I mean that as a compliment."

Mariah laughed and felt warmth spread through her chest and thought, “This is what happiness feels like when it doesn't have a shadow under it.”

"So let me get this straight," she said.

"You've never met this guy. You've never seen his face. Except for a photo. And you're already.." she gestured at Mariah with a cracker.

"I haven't said anything."

"You don't need to say anything. You have the face."

"What face?"

"The face," Zara said. "The one you've never made before in the entire eleven years I've known you. The slightly terrified but extremely happy face."

Mariah threw a pillow at her.

Zara caught it.

"I'm just saying," she continued. "I've been your best friend and I've never seen you look like something finally fits."

Mariah was quiet for a moment.

"That's exactly what it feels like," she said. "Like something finally fits."

Zara watched her carefully. For once, her expression turned serious.

"Then don't overthink it," she said quietly. "Just let it happen."

Mariah was still smiling when she came downstairs that evening, one hand trailing along the wall the way she always did when her mind was somewhere else entirely.

Angela was at the kitchen counter making tea, her back to the door. The television was on low in the living room, a news segment, some anchor talking about a cold case reopening in Portland. Angela reached over and turned it off before Mariah could hear what it was about.

"Good day?" Angela asked.

"Really good actually." Mariah pulled open the fridge. "Zara came over. We talked for hours."

"About anything exciting?"

Mariah smiled at the fridge. "Maybe."

Her phone buzzed on the counter beside her.

She picked it up without thinking, the automatic reflex of her generation.

A notification from a true crime page she followed casually, the kind of account she scrolled through on slow evenings without it meaning anything.

"Portland infant abduction case investigators announce new lead after 18 years."

She read it, registered it the way you register weather in a city you don't live in, and set her phone face down on the counter.

"Anything interesting?" Angela asked.

"Just a true crime thing I follow." Mariah closed the fridge. "Some old case in Portland."

Angela turned back to her tea.

"Mm," she said.

Just that. Just mm.

Mariah didn't notice anything wrong with that.

She had no reason to.

~ ~ ~

That night Anthony called for the first time.

No warning. Just a contact request and a voice note attached.

“I know we said we'd keep it to messages but I heard a song and I needed you to hear it too and typing felt wrong. You don't have to call back.”

She called back immediately.

His voice was low and unhurried. Steady in the way of someone who had learned early that stillness was its own kind of strength.

"Hi," he said.

"Hi," she said back.

Neither of them spoke for a moment.

"This is strange," Anthony said. "I feel like I already know what you sound like."

"You do know what I sound like. You just heard me."

"No." A pause. "I mean, before this. Like I already knew."

Mariah understood exactly what he meant and that scared her a little.

"Anthony."

"Yeah."

"That hollow feeling. The one we talked about." She pulled her knees up. "Does yours ever go quiet?"

A long silence.

"It did," he said. "For the first time. About four days ago."

Mariah closed her eyes.

She didn't ask when. She already knew. It was the same night, maybe even the same minute she had replied to his comment in a place she had no reason to be.

She didn't say any of that out loud because she had no language for it yet.

But somewhere in Portland, a boy sat in the dark holding his phone with both hands. And somewhere in Seattle, a girl did the same.

Neither of them understood why meeting each other didn’t feel new. It felt more like remembering someone they had known before.

~ ~ ~

Angela stood in the hallway outside Mariah's door. She placed one hand flat on the door, and stood there for a long time.

Then she walked back downstairs, picked up her own phone, and scrolled to a number she hadn't called in years.

Her thumb hovered over it. She put the phone face down on the counter.

She told herself it was nothing.

But her mind kept repeating Mariah's voice.

“It's some old case in Portland.”

And Angela said nothing.
