Chapter 4

Penulis: Eleven
Just then, there was a knock on the door to the autopsy room, and Evan looked up with a frown. I knew he hated it whenever someone disrupted him at work.

However, when he saw who it was, his frown disappeared. He had a doting smile on his face as he called out gently, "Why are you here, Carmen? I'm still in the middle of work."

Carmen glanced at my body on the autopsy table before looking away. Lifting the bags of food she was holding, she said with a smile, "No one wants to work overtime while hungry, right? I brought supper for everyone."

Evan nodded at the others in the room, and they immediately cheered as they exited the autopsy room. While making his way toward the pizzas Carmen had brought, Isaac Sorrell, the intern, couldn't resist remarking, "Your wife is so thoughtful, Dr. Foster!"

Shaun quickly covered Isaac's mouth to stop him from talking, but Evan heard the comment anyway. After a glance at Carmen, his expression hardened, and he growled, "Don't ever bring up that woman in front of me again. I've been working overtime at the police station for three days now, and she didn't even bother calling me. She's not fit to be my wife."

I stood behind Evan with a look of bitterness.

Previously, I'd also brought supper to Evan when he had to work late. However, he berated me for disturbing him at work and threw the supper I'd brought into the trash, right in front of everyone. He'd also gotten the police officers to chase me out.

Now, after seeing the doting look Evan gave Carmen, it all made sense to me. This was the difference love made.

Evan's colleagues started digging into the food, and the atmosphere grew lively. Shaun came to hand Evan a slice of pizza, but just as he was about to take it, Carmen stopped him and stuffed a lunchbox into his hand.

"This is your supper, Evan. It has less salt and less oil, which is good for your kidney."

Everyone began teasing Evan, saying that Carmen had lovingly prepared a separate supper just for him. Although he hated such teasing, he didn't tell them to stop. In fact, he gave everyone a smug smile as if he relished the attention.

After sharing a loving supper, Carmen packed up the empty lunchbox and left, while Evan went back to the autopsy room.

Once again, he took his scalpel. My womb was cut open, and from it, he retrieved a newly formed fetus. He replaced it on an autopsy tray.

This was my first time seeing my child.

Since the day we got married, I'd wanted to give Evan a child, but he kept refusing to have one.

Three months ago, I tricked Evan into coming home. After getting him drunk, I climbed on top of him. That was how I managed to get pregnant.

Alas, I would never be able to hear the baby calling me mommy.

Evan didn't even get to change out of his suit before he led a team over to Carmen's apartment. It had already been ransacked, with Carmen's identification documents and some cash missing. He punched the wall and silently cursed himself for being so careless. He should've apprehended Carmen himself and watched to make sure she was in police custody."Wait a little longer for me, Lyra. I'll make sure Carmen pays an eye for an eye."Evan's face was ghostly pale. It had been three days since he'd last had a good night's rest. I stood in silence beside him the whole time and saw everything he'd done."Don't go, Evan. It's dangerous. I know you love me. I forgive you."I kept saying those words to him, hoping to stop him, but he couldn't hear me.Ignoring his body, which was already stretched to its limits, Evan joined the police as they searched the entire city for Carmen. The search went on for five days, and it seemed as though she'd vanished into thin air.In the end, it was Henr

Evan prepared a grand proposal for Carmen. He made a heart out of roses on the beach and got down on one knee in front of her.On Evan's third day of being Carmen's fiancé, she brought him home to meet her father, Burton Locke. He turned out to be the criminal boss in charge of the entire criminal organization. There was a camera hidden in a button on Evan's shirt, and it recorded everything. Based on the footage that was transmitted back to them, the police were able to confirm that Burton had orchestrated several major cases that occurred abroad. However, it still wasn't the best time to make an arrest yet.Burton was satisfied with the fact that Evan was a medical examiner. They were about to go into a new line of business—organ trafficking. Who else but a medical examiner would be even more skilled at retrieving organs?Evan acted as though he wasn't all that keen about joining in on the family business. He only agreed to it once Carmen threatened to break up with him, thus ma

Through Evan's murmurings as he spoke to the picture of me over the past two days, I now knew that Carmen was an underboss for a criminal organization. The police had been hoping to unearth the hidden criminal boss through her.At the time, they were still finding a way to get close to her. Unexpectedly, while buying me a cake, Evan ended up running into Carmen, who had forgotten her purse. He'd paid for her coffee on her behalf, and just like that, she fell in love with his gentlemanly demeanor. Therefore, the police took advantage of the situation by secretly arranging for Evan to become their spy. His mission was to get close to Carmen, earn her trust, and gather evidence of the criminal organization's illegal activities.Evan knew how important this case was. The criminal organization in question was notorious for its ruthlessness. People died at their hands every day. Thus, he made up his mind to accept this mission. However, he also knew that Carmen was no saint. For a woman

Once Evan got a clear look at what was inside the box, his legs nearly gave way beneath him. Holding the table to keep himself steady, he picked up the items and studied them carefully. The box contained a home pregnancy test as well as an official pregnancy test report from the hospital, which stated I was three months pregnant.Three months? That was the same as the fetus he had removed from the victim yesterday. The truth finally dawned on Evan. He called Shaun and asked, his voice shaking, "I'm the father of the baby, right?"After a long pause, Shaun gave a short, sorrowful reply."Yeah."Evan's phone slipped out of his hands. He gulped several times before rushing to the bathroom and dry heaving. At last, he now knew that the body which had been laid on his autopsy table—the victim who had been sexually abused and dismembered afterward—was me, his wife. He'd kept his word. He'd been the one who tended to my body, sliced me open, and even retrieved our child. After a viole

Before Shaun could finish speaking, Evan's phone rang. The ringtone was the one Evan had specifically assigned to Carmen, so he made a shushing gesture before taking the call. Two seconds later, he dashed out of the autopsy room.I heard the call. Carman had been tearfully screaming for help over the phone.Evan ran back to Carmen's apartment and made it back in under ten minutes. Thanks to all that running, his chest moved rapidly as he panted, and droplets of sweat clung to the strands of hair above his forehead. He looked a little disheveled. After almost crashing his way through the apartment door, Evan shouted for Carmen. Tracking where she was based on her cries, he rushed into the bathroom.Inside the steamy bathroom, Carmen was sitting on the vanity with nothing but a towel around her. When she saw Evan, she cried out with a pout, "There's a rat, darling…"Exhaling in relief, Evan walked up to Carmen and put his arms around her waist before kissing her on the shoulder. Th

After completing the autopsy, Evan drew a conclusion.I'd been abused for over ten hours before getting killed by having my throat slit. Then, my head was chopped off, and my body became a dog's chew toy.Due to the missing kidneys, Evan assumed the perpetrators belonged to an organ trafficking ring. The police were running a DNA test on the fetus in an attempt to locate the father. Evan took his gloves off and decided to head home to await the results. He didn't return to our home, however, and neither did he go back to his assigned dormitory. Instead, he went to an apartment near the police station. When he opened the door, he was greeted by the sight of Carmen sitting on the couch, reading a book.Once she saw Evan, she held her arms open. Her voluptuous body was slightly visible beneath her sheer nightgown.Evan walked over to the couch and hugged her. He took a deep breath as he rested his head against her nape."How did the autopsy go?""The victim was a pitiful young wom
