Diana

I ran.

I don’t remember how long.

As soon as I saw the door, I opened it, shut it back after me, and just made sure my feet were pushing me forward.

I don’t even know if my feet ever really touched the ground, or if I just flew on panic and adrenaline alone.

My breath burned in my throat, ragged and loud in the silence of the hallways. Every shadow looked like a hand waiting to grab me. Every creak in the walls sounded like the echo of footsteps chasing me.

I couldn't get the image out of my head.

That red X.

Slashed right through my name like I was nothing more than a sentence someone wanted to be erased.

No.

I shook my head over and over as I ran. It had to be a mistake.

Maybe it wasn’t my name. Maybe it wasn’t even a real family tree. Just another trick, another cruel illusion designed to mess with my mind.

Maybe Edric was right and the book I read was indeed breaking my brain. I couldn’t tell for sure.

But deep down, I knew better.

That mark on my wrist had glowed for a

DianaI sat on the edge of Edric's bed, trying not to let the warmth of our earlier moment cloud my thoughts. That was a lot more difficult than I anticipated it to be.His fingers had just left mine, a touch too lingering, and part of me wanted to lean in again. But I couldn’t let the moment distract me."Edric," I began, voice soft, testing the waters. "That door in the library. The one I told you about. It's real. I know what I saw."He let out a breath, dragging a hand through his dark hair. He looked at me like I’d just told him I saw ghosts. "Diana... not this again. There is no door. We’ve checked. I don’t know what you think you saw, but it wasn’t there.""But it was," I insisted, my fingers curling into fists on my lap. "You know it. I saw you and Muzan talking about it. You said I shouldn’t be alone when I see those places."His gaze snapped to mine, sharp. "You were spying?""I was walking," I retorted. "You weren’t whispering. That’s on you."He pinched the bridge of his

EdricShe was hiding something.I watched her closely, the way her hands twitched around the trap, the way her eyes avoided mine like they’d catch fire if we locked gazes for too long. Diana was usually braver than this. Reckless, even. But tonight, she was shifty. Nervous. And that trap in her hands wasn’t a good sign.“Diana…what exactly are you planning to catch?” I asked quietly, taking a slow step forward. She stiffened, her grip tightening on the metal contraption. “You planning to catch a ghost or something?”“No,” she said quickly…too quickly. “It’s nothing. I just… wanted to try something.”“Try something?” My brow creased. “Like what?”She opened her mouth, but no sound came out. And just like that, the silence turned heavy. It was almost like I could see her resolve not to say anything else. She took a step back, but I followed, gently reaching for the trap. “Diana, give it to me.”“I said it’s fine…”Her voice cracked as I reached further, and she pulled away, but not fa

DianaThe book had been sitting on the top shelf for days…thick, dusty, and bound in leather so dark it almost shimmered blue under the candlelight. Its title called out to me, in a way that I could totally resist, but for some reason, didn’t want to help myself. The book screamed, “Run”, but here I was.I had passed over it every time, telling myself I’d get to it later when I was more prepared. When my mind was sharper, less clouded by emotion. But tonight was the night, and the pain in my chest was a testament to just how long and how hard it had been pounding.I reached up and pulled it down, wincing at the weight. It smelled like mildew and something fainter, like ash. I set it gently on the table and opened it with slow hands. The first page bled ink.Not literally, but the script spilled and ran as if freshly poured as if the letters were still alive. I whispered the words as I read, tracing the passage of witches long dead, their curses flung across centuries like poisoned s

DianaThe air was colder by the hidden door. I stared at it, my brain itching with curiosity. Edric was still passed out and Muzan hadn’t come this way so far, enough for me to ask any questions.‘What’s the worst that could happen?’ my brain told me. With my terrible decision-making skills, I judged my brain right. My hand moved toward the wooden edge.I didn’t even touch the thing before a strong grip latched on my arm and pulled me back. My heart could have stopped beating right there and then, and instinctively, I poised for a strike but stopped my raised hand when I saw the person. It was Muzan. His face was ghastly and pale, and he was staring at me like I had just tried to jump off a cliff.“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he asked with a low whisper-yell.“I…” I pulled my hand back, still shaken by the sudden touch. “I was going to open it. Just to see what’s behind.”“No.” The word landed like a blade between us. “Absolutely not.”I crossed my arms. “Why not? That

DianaHe hadn’t stirred. Not once since the moment, his eyes fluttered shut after the kiss. His breathing was shallow but steady, his skin pale against the dark pillows, and his black veins still faintly visible along his jaw and neck. Whatever poison he’d taken had wrung his body dry, and now he lay in a heavy sleep that looked too much like death for my comfort.I hadn't left his side. Not last night. Not the night before. Not the night before that.Three nights.Three nights of sitting beside him, watching over him, waiting for the weight in my chest to lift. It didn’t. If anything, it sank deeper, rooting itself like some parasitic vine that fed off guilt and dread and the cruel weight of not knowing what the morning would bring.I ran my fingers along the edge of the blanket and pulled up to his chest. Carefully. Almost reverently.I’d been sent here to die, and the only way to leave was to kill him.I thought it would be easy, especially when he had given me the free range. Ho

EdricI knew I was drunk. It wasn’t the kind where I became loose and couldn’t carry my limbs around by my own will. No. This was the light kind of drunk…the one where I couldn’t carry my thoughts. The one where ideas became so enlightening, they couldn’t stay in just my head alone. They had to live with others. The bottle was already half-empty, and I wasn’t sure if I hated the burn in my throat or craved it. I sat on the floor of the study, back against the cold stone wall, legs stretched out, staring at the amber liquid inside the bottle like it held some kind of divine answer. It didn’t.Nothing did, and that’s why I was drinking. The door creaked behind me. Light footsteps.Diana.I didn’t turn. I didn’t have the strength to pretend, not tonight.“You shouldn’t be drinking,” she said softly, walking around until she was in front of me.“You say that like it matters.”She crouched down beside me, her hand hovering near the bottle but not taking it. Her eyes scanned my face, search

DianaI woke up beside him…again. The sheets were still warm where our bodies had shared space through the night, though we hadn’t touched. I don’t remember falling asleep. I don’t remember being carried to his bed. The last time my eyes were open, I was screaming in pain, begging for my wrist to feel normal again.Muzan’s voice was an echo in the wind, and Edric’s warmth was the only other thing I could feel.He was already awake. He sat on the edge of the bed with his elbows on his knees and his eyes staring down at his open palms like they might hold answers. The veins on his face from the first time we did the spell of death were there. Long, spidering lines sat on his face, neither posing an immediate threat nor fixing anything. At least, none that I knew of.I hated seeing him like that.“Does it… hurt?” I asked, voice hoarse with sleep and something heavier. He didn’t look at me right away. “Not enough to die. Not enough to stop.”Just like I thought. That should’ve comforted

DianaThe hallway of mirrors was colder than I remembered. We hadn’t been here since the music box. Since when Edric and I discovered the one thing that somehow brought us closer.I remembered the revelation he had and the realization that this whole thing might have as well been linked to my mother and I“Luna,” he’d whispered, his eyes glassy as he told his cryptic tale. I still remember everything about this hall and the treacheries it held after.Edric walked beside me; his jaw tight. I could tell he was still thinking about the book we found in Muzan’s hands—The Key to Ramiuna. The words Blood Bride and Moon-touched Wolf were burned into both our brains, even though neither of us knew what they truly meant. Our minds raced with the possibility of what this all could be.We stepped into the center of the hallway, where the dust was thickest and the mirrors most broken. I was about to ask him if anything looked familiar when he suddenly jerked forward. His breath hitched. A loud,
