Evalina's pov

"Do you really think we can fix it?"

Daisy sat at the kitchen table in her nightgown, watching me. In front of me, on a clean white cloth, lay every piece of the glass wolf I could find on the floor. I had spent half the morning picking them up one by one.

"We'll find a way," I said. I held up a piece that looked like a tiny paw. "See? Here's his foot. And this one is part of his tail."

"Daddy says some things can't be fixed."

I looked up at her. "Well, I don't give up on broken t

Evalina's pov"Daisy," Magnus whispered. "You're standing."He was still on his knees on the kitchen floor. His hands were frozen in the air where Daisy had pulled away from him. He stared at her legs like he couldn't believe what he was seeing.I couldn't believe it either. Daisy was holding on to me, but her feet were flat on the floor. Both of them. No crutch. No table. Nothing.I looked over her head at Vespera. All the color had drained out of her face. Her mouth was open, and her eyes were wide. She looked like someone had thrown a bucket of ice water on her.She hadn't expected this. Daisy was supposed to stay on the floor, confused and quiet. She wasn't supposed to stand up. And she definitely wasn't supposed to run to me.Magnus got to his feet and walked over to us slowly. He knelt down in front of Daisy and gently turned her face toward him."Baby, look at me," he said softly. "Tell Daddy what happened."Vespera rushed forward. "Alpha Magnus, she hit her head! She doesn't r

Evalina's povMagnus's eyes changed. The gray disappeared, and black spread across them like ink spilling into water. A deep growl rolled out of his chest. The veins in his neck rose up, thick and dark.I knew that look. I had seen it last night, over the broken glass wolf.It was the curse.Vespera stood beside him, and I saw her lips curve into a tiny smile. Just for a second. Then her face went back to looking sad and worried. She knew. She knew exactly what the curse did to him, and she was using it."Magnus," I said, getting to my feet slowly. "You have to believe me. I would never hit Daisy. Never.""*Don't lie to me about my child!*"His voice shook the whole kitchen. I stumbled back against the wall. His hands curled into fists. Black claws pushed out of his fingertips. He took one heavy step toward me, then another. Then he stopped. His whole body froze. His head jerked to one side like someone had shouted in his ear. He squeezed his eyes shut and pressed a fist against his c

Evalina's pov"Throw *me* out?" Vespera laughed. "You're nothing!"She shoved me hard in the chest. I flew backward and crashed into the kitchen cabinet. Pots and pans rattled above my head."Miss Evalina!" Daisy cried from the floor."I'm okay," I said, even though my back was throbbing.Vespera walked toward me slowly, like a cat playing with a mouse."Magnus deserves a Luna with a real wolf," she said. "Not a weak, helpless little thing like you."I pushed myself away from the cabinet and stood up straight."No," I said. "Weak is bullying a little girl."Her eyes narrowed."And even if I wasn't here," I went on, "Magnus would never choose a woman who hurts his daughter."Vespera threw her head back and laughed. It was a cold, ugly sound."You think you know Magnus just because you married him yesterday?" She stepped closer until her face was right in front of mine. "I know *everything* about him. I know his favorite drink. I know which side of the bed he sleeps on." She smiled slow

"Well, I don't give up on broken things."Daisy didn't say anything. But her lips moved into a very small smile.*Knock. Knock. Knock.*We both turned toward the front door."Are you expecting someone?" I asked.Daisy's smile disappeared. She shook her head. "No."Before I could stand up, the door swung open on its own. A woman walked straight in like she owned the place. She wore a long red coat, and her shiny black hair was pinned up high on her head. She carried a big cloth bag in her arms.I knew that red coat. I had seen it

Evalina's pov "Why did you do that?" Daisy was sitting on the edge of her bed, hugging her bunny. I knelt on the floor and gently checked her bare feet for glass. "Do what?" I asked. "Take the blame. I'm the one who broke it." She sniffed. "Daddy should have been mad at me. Not you." "No," I said firmly. "You're a little girl. It was an accident. And I'm your mom now. I will always protect you." Daisy's face went hard. "You're not really my mom." The words stung, but I understood them. "You're right," I said softly. "I will never replace your real mom. Nobody ever could. But I married your father, and that means we're family now. Family looks out for each other." She was quiet for a long time. She played with the ripped ear on her bunny. "Vespera said you would hate me," she whispered. "Who is Vespera?" "A lady in our pack. She brings Daddy soup." Daisy didn't look up. "She said my new mommy would hate me because I'm broken. She said nobody wants a broken child." My ches

Evalina's povMy heart was racing.I had only known this man for two hours. Husband or not, I was not ready to share a bed with him.I took a step back and looked down at my wet boots. "I'm not ready."Magnus didn't move. He didn't say anything. I made myself look up at him."I'm sorry," I said quickly. "I know we're married. I know that's what wives do. But everything is happening so fast. Yesterday I was getting ready to marry someone else, and now...""Don't apologize."I blinked. "What?""You need time." He picked up a folded blanket from the arm of a chair. "I'll take the couch for now."I stared at him. "You would really do that for me?""I'm your husband, Evalina." He tossed the blanket onto the couch. "I know this marriage is part of a peace deal between our packs. But you are not my prisoner here."I didn't know what to say. Back in Redwater, everyone said Magnus was a monster. They said he had no heart. But monsters didn't offer to sleep on the couch."I'll take your bag to
