“Soulmate.”

An almost inaudible sound escaped from the man’s mouth.

Irene couldn’t believe her ears and heart. How could he be her mate? How could she have a second mate? How could–

“Alpha, what should we do with her?” Irene wasn’t able to complete her thoughts as three large guards surrounded her, aiming to deal with her in a negative way.

Her pupils constricted.

‘No. It can’t be. He can’t be,’ she tried to convince herself that her ears heard the wrong thing. It was impossible for this man to be an alpha when she, herself, was already an omega.

It was impossible for an alpha to be mated to an omega. At least, that was what Irene believed till now.

The man lifted his hand and gestured for the guards to back up, his eyes never leaving Irene’s figure. His gaze on her was scrutinizing and hostile. Like he couldn’t be bothered about her existence but felt like he should be concerned about it.

“Get up,” he said, his voice smooth and deep.

“Huh?” Irene’s mouth fell open in confusion.

“Get up from the floor,” he said again.

Irene snapped back into her senses, realizing that she had made her chair for herself on the polished tiles.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” she lowered her gaze and got up to her feet, “I forgot.”

Then she wiped down the back of her dress and straightened the front in an attempt to appear neater. Everyone in the hall was watching this drama unfold in front of them with wide eyes.

‘Who is this girl? And why is she still alive?’ They were all thinking.

“Guards,” the man said, the people in reference perked up, eager for an order, “Take her upstairs and leave her in one of the rooms.”

“Alpha…?” One of the guards expressed his utter confusion on the behalf of himself and everyone else.

“Should I repeat myself?” The man’s eyes narrowed dangerously, inciting fear.

“N-No, Alpha,” the guard backed away, almost trembling. Then he exchanged looks with his colleagues.

Irene didn’t seem to understand what the exchange of looks meant, but soon came to as she was lifted off the floor by tight grips on her forearms, leaving her with no chance of escaping.

“Hey, hey, hey, hey. What are you doing? Let go of me!” Irene struggled, despite knowing it would be futile.

“Be quiet,” one of the guards said to her as the other two began to move.

“No! Wait! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to bump into you! Let me go! Please!” Irene began to yell as her heart palpitated intensely out of fear.

She was trying to beg the large man who unexpectedly turned out to be an alpha. But she couldn’t even catch a glimpse of him. Irene’s eyes searched for a way to free herself.

Surprisingly, her gaze landed on something, someone.

“Desmond!” Irene cried as the men carried her over a long, exquisite flight of stairs. “You have to help me! They’re taking me away! Help me!”

All of Irene’s cries fell on deaf ears as Desmond pretended not to hear her. His attention was fixed on the half-empty wine glass in front of him.

Irene sensed an odd chill enveloping her body when she reached the top of the stairs with the guards’ aid.

Desmond wasn’t going to help her. He told her that there was nothing between them anymore. She didn’t know anyone else here. There was no one to help her. She was doomed, done for, finished.

Irene gave up on struggling, reality setting deep in her head. The two men graced the floor with her feet when they got to a particular door. One of the men let go of her arm and opened the door.

“What are you guys going to– ugh!” Irene was shoved into the room mid-sentence. She turned around to complain about their aggressiveness but a door was slammed in her face.

Irene heard the guards locking the door with a key, then retreated in uniform footsteps.

‘This really can’t be happening,’ Irene thought as she rested her head against the door.

She came here to get Desmond back. Now, she had another mate and was probably about to be executed by said mate who turned out to be an alpha.

How could all of this be happening to her?

Irene sucked in a deep breath, then turned around. The room was dark. She searched around the walls for a switch before finding one and flicking the lights on.

The room was as empty as her brain. It only had two wooden chairs for sitting down. The walls and floor were painted gray, and there wasn’t even a window to be seen.

Irene almost believed that this was a torture room, but due to the lack of dried blood stains anywhere, she dismissed the thought.

She was already locked in here, she might as well deal with whatever was coming to her confidently. That was how Irene led herself to settle down on one of the chairs.

During this unknown amount of time that she had, Irene was going to try and use her brain. As long as her new alpha mate found out she was an omega, he would be inclined to get rid of her.

However, among the alphas of the nine packs in the Werewolf Territory, three were known to be nice. The alpha of Earth Pack was said to be an angel. The alpha of Venus Pack was not too bad. And the alpha of her pack, Pluto Pack, was very lax about a lot of things.

Irene suddenly slid down from her comfortable chair and knelt on the floor. She closed her eyes and pressed her palms together.

“Goddess, please. I beg of you. I know you never listen to my prayers, but hear me out this one time. Let that new mate of mine be the alpha of Earth Pack. Please, I beg. If he’s anyone else, then I’m fu–”

“What are you doing?” A deep voice interrupted Irene’s heartfelt prayer.

She opened one eye and saw her new mate standing at the door.

“Nothing!” Irene quickly said, rising up from the floor and dusting her kneecaps.

The man cocked his head one side, watching Irene with blatant inquiry. Only to shake his head a moment later, as if dismissing his curiosity about her. Then he walked into the room and gestured for Irene to sit down.

Irene nodded obediently and did as instructed. Previously, in his absence, the wooden chair had been comfortable. Now, it seemed like there were pins under Irene’s butt as she sat down.

Her mate didn’t seem to notice this newfound structure of the chair as he balanced well and crossed his legs, resting his back with ease.

“Irene, right?” The man said smoothly.

‘How does he know my name!?’ Irene panicked.

“We have to address the issue at hand.”

No. No. No. No. No. No.There couldn’t be something wrong with their mate bond. If there was, that meant Irene wouldn’t be able to be with Desmond ever again!“Are you sure? Maybe it’s–”“I’m sure,” Adam abruptly cut Irene off, then backed away from her, “Come with me.”He didn’t give any explanation as he turned around and marched towards the only door in the room.“Hey! Wait, wait, wait, wait! Where are you going? Let’s try again!” Irene ran up to Adam and stopped behind him.He craned his neck in her direction and said, “I’m not trying again. There’s something wrong here. It’s best to meet someone who’s knowledgeable about mate bonds so they can tell us more.”Irene looked at Adam, finding it difficult to grasp the entire situation. She couldn’t believe that the problem they were facing with the rejection was so superficial that they needed external intervention.“What if there isn’t anything wrong with the bond?” Irene asked with a small voice.Irritation crept onto Adam’s express

And my wolf soul finally feels secure again. I don’t want to be rejected. It hurts,” Irene explained, recalling her rejection experience which caused her eyes to water.Adam’s gloved hands vi

Outwardly, she cleared her throat and nodded dumbly.“You caused a scene at my ball and turned out to be my mate,” the man said, the look on his face was ironic.“I didn’t mean to. I just wanted to get Desmond back,” Irene spoke quietly, not even daring to hold the man’s gaze.“Desmond?” he inquired.“My… first mate.” Irene lifted her head.“Ah, him,” a flash of recognition crossed the man’s handsome features, “I still don’t understand how you could get another mate right after getting rejected by one.”He was mostly talking to himself as he spoke in whispers. Irene heard him. She, too, couldn’t understand why any of this was happening. She didn’t want a new mate. She didn’t want any alpha. She wanted Desmond. Even though he didn’t want her back.Irene clenched her fists as she recalled the events that transpired before she go

“Desmond, you’re–”“What are you doing here?” Desmond was wearing a very hostile expression on his face as he reached Irene.Irene’s courage wavered. “I c-came to see you. Look at me.”Desmond’s eyes raked her figure. As impressive as Irene thought she looked, Desmond didn’t seem moved by her appearance at all.“If you know what’s good for you, you’re going to leave this place now,” Desmond advised—warned—with a low-pitched tone. Finally feeling the many eyes set on her, both judging and inquiring, Irene suddenly felt small. But she still had a goal to achieve. She couldn’t come all the way here and leave without her mate.“Desmond, listen to me. I know you feel like I’m undeserving of you, but I can assure you that I am. I truly am,” she reached to touch Desmond’s hand as she spoke, “If you can just come back with me, I’ll–”“Don’t be ridiculous,” Desmond slapped her hand away with a deep frown marring his handsome features. Then he glanced around them, facing the guests of the event

Irene stared at her reflection on the mirror hanging on the wall. She was wearing the gown given to her by the hoodie girl, along with a few accessories that Desmond had once gifted her.Her wavy light brown hair fell over her shoulders, and her face was lightly painted with makeup to enhance her features. Her look was refreshing and beautiful. If one was able to ignore the dirty white sneakers on her feet, they would realize that she almost looked like someone from a classy pack.Irene tried not to look at her own feet. She convinced herself that the state of the sneakers didn’t matter as she was too clumsy to walk on heels that she didn’t even own.“Okay. This is perfect. I’m perfect,” she said to her reflection on the mirror with a bright smile on her maroon-painted lips.‘Are you sure you are?’ A small voice in the back of Irene’s head questioned. The smile on her lips faltered.“I-I am!” She nodded her head in strong belief. Then she covered her ears with her palms and yelled, “

Irene was sitting in front of the counter at a rundown bar place. The walls of the bar were painted dark red with the heads of several wild beasts hanging on them as prizes. The bar was almost empty with about five people scattered around the wooden tables and chairs. Irene was the only person sitting on a bar stool. And she was the only one with tears streaming down her cheeks as she emptied several beer cans.“You’re scaring my customers away with your ugly crying,” the female bartender, who was boldly bald and rocking a millions tattoos crawling up both arms extending to her neck, said to Irene.Irene obviously wasn’t the most beautiful girl in the world, but her delicate facial features consisting of a pair of bright green irises, scanty long lashes, straight button nose, and soft pink lips made her at least pleasing to the eyes. However, when she cried, her eyes would puff up, her nose would turn red, and the size of her lips would nastily increase, granting her the look of an

“I don’t want you anymore.” Irene, who had been cooking up dinner in the small kitchen of their cozy one-room apartment, heard those words from her mate as she lifted her head to welcome him home. “Excuse me?” she said in confusion, her brows furrowed.Desmond, a guy who was about a hundred and eighty centimeters tall with a buzzcut and a good-looking face, was Irene’s mate for three years and counting. She knew very well that he was not the kind of guy who dallied in making jokes.“I don’t want you as my mate anymore.” Desmond clarified. Irene snorted in amusement as she turned off the cooker and wiped her hands clean with a rag. Then she stepped out of the kitchen aisle and walked over to Desmond, wrapping her arms around his waist without a care.“It’s too late for jokes, darling. Dinner is ready. I’ll set your dish, okay?” She looked up at him smiling, dismissing his words.Desmond did not return her smile. His dark brown eyes were drawn into narrow slits as he stared at her wi
