Elara

I didn’t sleep a single second after the witch left.

Kael had carried me back to his room, his arms a cage around me as if he could shield me from the witch’s cryptic words. But once the door closed, once the silence fell, my thoughts clawed at me like beasts in the dark.

Empty, and yet not.

You wear the mask of an omega, but that is not what you truly are.

The words wouldn’t stop echoing.

I sat up on the edge of the massive bed, staring at my trembling hands. The fire had burned low in the hearth, casting long, strange shadows on the walls. I wrapped my arms around myself and rocked slightly, like maybe that would keep me from falling apart.

If I wasn’t an omega… what was I?

Footsteps moved behind me, heavy and deliberate. I didn’t need to look to know who it was. Kael’s presence filled the room the way a storm filled the sky, electric and unrelenting.

“Elara,” he said, his deep voice rougher than usual. “You should be resting.”

I gave a bitter laugh. “Resting? After what she s

KaelThe witch’s chamber smelled of smoke and iron. Candles burned down to pools of wax, their shadows stretching over stone walls etched with symbols older than any pack.Elara’s hand was still in mine, small and trembling, though she tried to hide it. I could feel her pulse racing against my skin, and my wolf prowled restlessly, wanting to shield her from everything—even from the truth. The witch laid her bowl on the table, dark liquid swirling inside it. Her eyes gleamed as she looked between us.“The seal binding her,” she said, voice as smooth as glass, “isn’t a simple spell. It’s layered. Old. Woven into her very blood. I can trace the threads, but to tear them free will require more than herbs and chants.”My grip on Elara tightened. “What more?”The witch studied me with a look I didn’t like—knowing, too sharp. “Something older than me. Older than this land. Something primal.” She let the words hang in the air like smoke.Elara’s lips parted, her eyes darting between us. “What

ElaraKael brushed a strand of hair off my cheek and rose from the bed, his movements slow but decisive. The muscles in his back tensed as he tugged on his shirt, his wolf prowling close beneath his skin.“Get dressed,” he said quietly. “We’re not waiting any longer.”I blinked at him, still tangled in the sheets. “Now?”“Yes. Now.” His voice was low, but there was no mistaking the command in it. “The witch hasn’t left yet. We’re going to her.”My stomach tightened. Part of me wanted to burrow back under the covers, to delay whatever truths might be waiting for us. But the other part—the part that had been restless and half-panicked since I was brought here—sat up straighter. This was what I’d asked for. This was what I’d told him I wanted.Kael opened the door and called softly down the hall. A moment later Lucian appeared, followed by Rowan, Kael’s beta. Both men looked as if they hadn’t slept much either.“She’s still in the south wing,” Lucian reported. “Preparing her herbs.” His

ElaraKael’s arms were still wrapped around me, his chest a wall of heat under my palms. For a long time we just sat there, breathing each other in, both of us trying to quiet something wild and frightened inside. Then he shifted, pulling back just enough so he could look down at me. His eyes were darker now, the gold ring of his wolf bleeding into the grey. The look wasn’t Alpha authority; it was determination, the kind that meant he’d already made up his mind.“I’ve been a coward,” he said quietly. “Trying to pretend that keeping you at arm’s length would keep you safe. Trying to pretend that calling you ‘breeder’ would stop me from wanting you. That’s over.”My stomach tightened. “Kael—”He put a finger against my lips, gently. “Listen. The witch’s words were clear. There’s something bound in you, something hidden. That binding isn’t yours, and it isn’t mine. And the longer it stays, the more dangerous it becomes — for you and for me. If this thing between us is a bond, I have to k

ElaraElara’s POVThe first thing I felt was warmth. Not the thin, fleeting warmth of a blanket, but the kind that seeps into your bones, heavy and safe.Kael’s arms were around me.For a long moment I just lay there, eyes half-closed, my cheek against his bare chest. His heartbeat was steady and strong under my palm, a rhythm I could have drowned in. The scent of him was everywhere — wild and woodsmoke and something darker, something that always made my pulse race.I didn’t know how long I’d been awake before the reality of it began to press in.Last night had been… gods, I could barely think the word. It had been a claiming in everything but name. Kael had touched me like a man starved, kissed me like he was trying to breathe me in. And I had let him. I had wanted him.But now, in the soft morning light, with his arm heavy over my waist and his fingers curled against my hip as if he couldn’t quite let go even in sleep, my chest tightened with something else. Fear. Confusion. A quest

KaelThe moonlight spilled through the open window, silvering the room with a pale glow that clung to Elara like mist. She stood by the edge of the bed, her hair loose around her shoulders, the thin shift she wore whispering against her skin with every subtle movement. Her head was turned slightly, eyes cast down, but I could see the soft rise and fall of her chest as she breathed — too fast, too shallow. She was nervous. Afraid, maybe.Of me.Or of what she had begun to feel for me.My hands curled into fists at my sides, claws threatening to rip through. My wolf snarled inside me, pacing, demanding, take her, claim her, make her ours. For weeks, I had fought it.I had told myself that she was only here to give me an heir — to continue my line so my pack would remain strong. I had told myself it wasn’t about her, not about her laughter that broke past my walls, not about the way her scent haunted me even in sleep. But tonight, that lie shattered.I couldn’t stop staring at her. Could

ElaraThey woke me before the sun, but not with gentleness.A soft knock — two knocks — then the rustle of heavy boots in the corridor. My heart jumped into my throat before my eyes were even open. For someone who’d spent her life invisible, I had grown alarmingly good at hearing trouble.Kael was already awake. He sat on the edge of the bed, one broad shoulder bared, the morning light cutting across the planes of his face. When I blinked open, he looked up, and something in his expression made the breath leave me: tired, sharp, and unbearably watchful.“Elara,” he said, as if that one name could steady the whole room. “Get up. We need to speak.”I swung my legs over the side of the bed and planted my feet. The room smelled faintly of smoke and something else — the witch’s scent, musty and cold — and I felt a tightness in my chest that wasn’t simply fear of the witch. It was the thing the witch had said: empty and yet not. A phrase that kept winding around my thoughts and would not le
