A second later, Silas pushed open the door, carrying a cup of chamomile tea.

He set the tea beside me and said flatly,

"It's almost ten, Sophia. Is there anything else you need to tell me?"

I shook my head. "No."

"Lina wanted me to tell you she's sorry. She feels bad about all the trouble she's caused you."

Silas leaned down and kissed my cheek, his eyes soft. "Get some sleep when you're done. Don't wear yourself out."

Before I could answer, he left the study.

I sat there staring into space. As I was about to get up, my computer screen lit up.

A call from Lina flashed across the screen, a notification synced from Silas's phone.

The man who refused every call after ten answered in a second.

I smiled, got up, and poured the entire cup of tea down the toilet.

By the time I got back to the bedroom, Silas had his eyes closed. He looked like he was asleep.

Lying in the dark, I messaged my parents in New York. I told them I'd enter the contest to become our family's heir in seven days.

They texted back right away, "Welcome home, Sophia."

I slept less than four hours and still woke up right on time.

After so many years together, I'd fallen into Silas's routine.

Silas was in the shower.

His phone lay face down. When I touched it, it was burning hot.

I skimmed the other candidates' files, then went downstairs with my plan to contain the fallout from Lina's data leak.

I handed Silas the plan. "If you have any notes, just email them to me."

I turned to leave, but Silas stepped in front of me and nodded toward the coffeepot across the room.

"Where's my coffee?"

I looked down so I wouldn't have to meet his eyes. "Work's been crazy lately. You can make it yourself."

I pressed my lips together. "Or ask Lina. She already takes care of your day-to-day needs. She'd be better at it than I am."

Silas smiled. "Lina's thoughtful, sure. But nobody knows how I take my coffee like you do."

I gave him a faint smile and didn't answer.

Silas headed for the door. "Oh, and today's the anniversary of Lina's mother's death. I'm worried her PTSD will flare up, so I asked her to come to the office. I can't have lunch with you today."

I stopped short.

"Okay."

Lina's mother had died in a fire while rescuing Silas from his kidnappers. To repay that debt, he brought Lina into the Lazzari family, gave her money and connections, and treated her like the family's princess.

I'd always thought it was gratitude. Now it looked as if his feelings had crossed a line long ago.

I took out my phone and deleted every wedding-planning file Silas had sent me.

I wasn't going to need them anymore.

Sophia's POV:After I left Sicily, my career took off.My world kept turning without Silas. The wounds he'd given me had long since healed.Silas came looking for me once.It was the day of Moscow's first snow.My bodyguards stopped him outside my building.I'd bought the whole place to use for meetings.I watched Silas through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows. He knelt outside, a thin layer of snow gathering on his black coat.I knew what he wanted. He was silently begging me to come back."So that's your fiancé from Sicily?"Liam Orlov, my new business partner, handed me half a glass of whiskey on the rocks. We'd been friends since childhood. After graduating from Wharton, he'd taken over his family's arms business. He was my biggest client and one of my father's top choices for a future son-in-law."Ex-fiancé." I took the glass and sipped the perfectly chilled whiskey. He arched a brow. "Oh? Then I've still got a shot."I smiled. "Right now, love doesn't matter to me. My work is wh

I couldn't remember getting back to my mother's house.Sophia was gone. It felt as if she'd taken half my soul with her.I was soaked through. When my mother held out a warm towel, I waved it away.I sank into a leather chair. My voice came out hoarse. "Sophia's gone, Mother."My mother pushed the towel into my hands and scoffed. "Why waste a second missing a woman like that?"I looked at her. Contempt was written all over her face. She handed me her phone. "My dear son, I bet you've been too busy to see this video. Watch it, and you'll see how selfish and heartless Sophia is!"The headline read, "Sophia Corelli Elected to the Russian Federal Financial Summit Board."In the video, she wore a black suit and flawless makeup. She answered the reporters' questions with practiced ease."There are rumors that you have a fiancé in Sicily. Is that true?"Sophia smiled coolly and answered without a moment's hesitation. "I'm single. I don't have a fiancé."Clatter.The phone hit the floor."I to

"What kind of game are they playing?!"Is Sophia dragging the whole Corelli family into a fight with me now?I slammed the papers down on the table."Enzo, set up a meeting with Don Corelli. I need to see him right now!"I could guess what had happened. Sophia had talked her doting father into doing this. That stubborn woman was probably hiding at the Corelli estate, walking her dog and feeding her cats without a care in the world.Enzo didn't move. He just stared at me, stunned."You haven't heard the news?"I frowned. "What news?"I'd spent the night with Lina, finding doctors, checking her prescriptions, and arranging guards for her ward. I'd handled it all myself.Lina had taken up most of my attention."It's all over Sicily. Last night, the entire Corelli family packed up and moved to Russia. They're not coming back."For three seconds, the room went silent.I stared at Enzo and scoffed. "That's impossible—"But my heart was pounding."Forget the meeting. I'm going to the Corelli

Silas's POV:In Lina's hospital room, a sharp pain suddenly seized my chest.I frowned and pressed a hand to it. The strange pain slowly eased. But it left me with an unease I couldn't explain.Lina was pale, her eyes full of worry. "Silas, are you all right?"I shook my head and said softly, "I'm fine. Get some rest. I've posted bodyguards outside, and I'll be back first thing in the morning."Then I turned to go home. But a hand caught the hem of my jacket.I looked back. Lina's eyes were brimming with tears. Her voice trembled. "I'm so scared. Every time I close my eyes, I see those men's faces. Silas, will you stay with me?"I hesitated.A voice inside me said, Silas, go home. Go back to your fiancée.But in the end, I sighed and tucked the blanket around her."Okay, I'll stay. Close your eyes now and get some rest."She was the daughter of the woman who'd saved my life. As Don of the Lazzari family, I owed her that much.At 11 p.m., I broke my rule and texted Sophia myself."Don't

On the way home, Lina was in the front seat again. Silas took the long way to drop her off first.I sat in the back, going over the documents I needed for the contest again and again."Come sit up front."I didn't look up. "No thanks. There's plenty of room back here.""Suit yourself."Silas turned back around and stepped on the gas. When we got home, he handed me a tablet."Time to pick a wedding dress. Once we get the marriage license, we'll need to have the wedding quickly."I swiped through the dresses without much interest and pointed at the simplest one.Silas glanced at it and smiled. "Nice."He almost never complimented my taste."Lina likes this one too. She said it would look good on you."Even my wedding dress needed Lina's approval first. Before, I would've been furious. But now, I just nodded calmly."This one's great. Let's go with it."I was leaving tomorrow anyway. The wedding didn't mean anything to me.Silas patted my head. "I'll take care of the dress. Get some rest.
