Chapter 3

Author: Sun Keeper
Ever since my father died, Wynne had been raising me all on her own.

To provide me with the best care possible, Wynne practically split herself in two.

One part of her was devoted to the hospital, working her way toward a higher position so she could give me a better life.

The other half was mine to keep. She taught me the basics of being a wolf and raised me to be brave, strong, and fearless.

Sullivan was my neighbor, and we grew up together. No matter what happened, he was always there to keep me safe.

Once, while Wynne was away for advanced training, I injured myself on silver by accident. Sullivan wouldn’t leave my side for days, determined to nurse me back to health.

By the time we enrolled at the Werewolf Academy, Sullivan had turned down countless advances from well-born she-wolves and finally confessed his feelings for me.

“Odette, you’re the only Luna for me. Be mine!”

When did it all go terribly wrong?

I supposed everything started when Wynne took in Lena, a stray human with nowhere to go.

Lena was fragile and beautiful, like a frail flower swaying in the wind. Still, she always fought back the tears and uttered stubbornly, “I’m fine.”

At first, Wynne said to me, “It’s tough for Lena to fit in with our pack. You should take better care of her.”

Later, she would hold Lena and look at me with a frown.

“Just look at Lena. She always put me first. If she were my real daughter… Sigh. Why can’t you be more like her?”

Noticing how hurt I was, Sullivan used to stand up for me.

“This human is manipulative. She always plays the victim in front of your mother.”

Bit by bit, I caught his eyes lingering on Lena.

“Lena’s actually not that bad. Despite what happened to her, she stays resilient and understanding. I think you misjudged her.

“Odette, you’re older. You should look out for her more.”

Today, Sullivan promised to wrap up his pack duties early, so he could be back to celebrate my birthday together. It was supposed to be just the two of us.

However, he brought Lena home.

He even had the nerve to say, “Lena is family. What’s a celebration without family?”

Even the birthday cake Sullivan bought was covered with a thick layer of hazelnut dusting—Lena’s absolute favorite.

Seeing that I hadn’t taken a bite, Sullivan finally recalled my hazelnut allergy and offered to buy me another dessert to make it up to me.

It never occurred to me that shortly after he stepped out, Lena set the curtains on fire. While I carried a bucket of water to put out the flames, she pushed me to the ground.

My stomach hit the ground hard. Though I threw my hands over my belly to break the fall, the pain was still unbearable.

The pain of the past collided with the agony of the present, giving me a fleeting moment of clarity.

Only I could save myself and my pup now.

Gritting my teeth, I crawled to the reception desk and gripped the edge to pull myself up.

“Please… Call me an ambulance… Take me to another infirmary…”

The nurse rolled her eyes and went back to reviewing the paperwork, pretending she hadn’t heard me.

Tears streamed down my face as I heaved heavily, repeating myself in a struggle.

“Please… Just call me an ambulance…”

Annoyed, the nurse rose to her feet.

“The ambulance dispatch costs 500 dollars. Cash or card?”

I choked.

It slipped my mind that I didn’t have a single penny on me.

Not long after I was pregnant, Wynne persuaded Sullivan to let Lena take over my duties as the Luna since my health deemed me unfit.

Under the same excuse, Wynne shifted all resources belonging to the Luna to Lena’s control.

Every penny I spent required Lena’s approval, while she was free to spend what was rightfully mine.

I had protested the arrangement before.

Wynne uttered, “Lena has been doing you a favor. It’s only right she gets something in return.

“You sit around and do nothing all day. Stop obsessing over spending money. It’s hard work for Lena to watch your spending, too.”

As I froze, the nurse sneered, “No money? You can’t expect a free ride just because you’re Dr. Carter’s daughter. Not a chance!

“Dr. Carter has made it clear that you’ll be seen once all the patients have had their turn.

“She has stressed time and again that everything must be done by the book. No one gets to break the rules!”

With my strength giving out, my knees buckled, and I crumpled back to the floor.

A hand caught me, holding me steady.

Aida, her eyes red-rimmed, looked alarmed.

“I’ll pay for the ambulance!”

The nurse grimaced and warned frantically, “Have you lost it, Aida? Are you trying to join the sanitation crew?”

Clenching her jaw, Aida held me closer in her arms.

“I became a nurse to save lives. I can’t just stand by while a mother and her pup die!”

Braving the judgmental looks around, Aida propped me up and walked me toward the exit.

“Odette, where are you going?

“Lena lost a lot of blood. You need to give her blood right now!”

Wynne’s grim voice boomed.

I shuddered and snapped my head back in disbelief.

“She only suffered a minor burn…”

“What do you know? Lena has a blood-clotting disorder. No wound is minor for her!”

Wynne stood firm on her ground.

“As the daughter of a healer, you should lead by example and show some grace.

“Besides, I’m giving you a chance to redeem yourself.”

I gasped for air, my voice raspy.

“Mom, have you read the prenatal report I gave you?”

Sullivan pushed Lena off him. “When did I ever say I’d marry you? “Odette is my only Luna. My heart only belongs to her.” Lena was taken aback at first, but she quickly burst into laughter. “Your heart is hers? You’re one to talk about love.” She locked eyes with Sullivan, her eyes dripping with mockery. “You often flirted with me right under her nose. Weren’t you on board when the Luna’s resources were transferred to me? All I was missing was the title.“Now that Odette’s out of the picture, don’t try to play the devoted lover now.” Wynne pointed at Lena, her finger trembling. “You took Odette’s life, all over a wolf? She’s your family! “I gave you the best of everything since I adopted you. Heck, I showered you with more attention than I ever gave her. How could you kill my daughter?” The smile on Lena’s face vanished, and her expression turned menacing. “The best of everything? How so? I’m just a charity case to you! “You think I’m weak because I have no fam

As it turned out, the moment I was dragged into the trauma room to have my blood drawn, Aida rushed straight to the Elders’ Council to sound the alarm. She was terrified that something would happen to me. When the elders arrived on the scene, they ran into the pack enforcers who were there to follow up on the fire incident. Brian, the captain of the pack enforcers, scanned the room with a keen eye before his gaze fell on my corpse. Surprised, Brian furrowed his brows. “Didn’t the paramedics tag Odette with the red critical band? Why does it look like she hadn’t received any care?” Wynne stumbled ahead and grabbed Brian’s sleeve. “What happened in the fire? Wasn’t Odette the first rescued? Why did she suffer horrific injuries?” Brian looked at her gravely. “It’s true she was the first one pulled out, but… that’s only because she was the only one trapped in the fire. On top of that, the fire was intentionally set ablaze. “We managed to restore the surveillance footage r

Minutes later, the door to the trauma room swung open. Will, dressed in tattered clothes and smelling of rot and sweat, was brought in. Spotting him, Wynne went up and grabbed him by the collar. “Will, what’s going on with Odette’s prenatal checkup results? “Why did her blood carry toxins? Why was her wolf injured?”Stumbling from the violent pull, Will looked past Wynne’s shoulder to my sad, lifeless body. His eyes flickered with shock and grief. He looked away and smiled at Wynne. “You should be asking yourself that, Dr. Carter.“Ms. Carter’s wolf was wracked with pain, but you, as her mother, had no idea?“Surely, you didn’t cut off your mind link?” Wynne shuddered. It all came back to her. Last month, when I applied to purchase some prenatal supplements, Wynne accused me of adding to Lena’s workload unnecessarily and cut off our mind link.As Wynne turned white, Will’s smirk deepened. “Perhaps Ms. Carter had seen through your hypocrisy and favoritism, so s

With Wynne falling to the floor, Sullivan asked worriedly, “What’s wrong, Wynne?” Wynne didn’t say a word. Wobbling to her feet, Wynne extended her shaking hand toward me. The tips of her fingers met with a stiff, icy chill. Color drained from her face, and her lips quivered as she mumbled, “Odette… Don’t scare me…” She gave me a rough shove. My limp body twisted, my head lolling toward her. My face was a ghastly gray, dried black blood still crusted around my lips. “Argh!” Throwing her head back, Wynne passed out cold on the floor. “Wynne!” Sullivan rushed over. Once he took a good look at my face, a deadly chill gripped him, and he sank to the floor. He crawled closer on his knees and shakily reached out to check whether I was still breathing. It took a split second before he jerked his hand back as though his skin had been burned by fire.Despite grabbing the edge of my examination table, he couldn’t hold himself up. He slid down to the ground, heaving h

Sullivan hesitated for a moment. In the end, he headed toward where I was. He barely took two steps when a panicked gasp broke out behind him. “What’s wrong, Lena?” Lena’s body went limp as she dropped right into Wynne’s arms. As blood rushed from his face, Sullivan rushed back to Lena’s side. The medical staff crowded around in a frenzy, scrambling to wake her and running more tests on her. Lena, her eyes half-open, grabbed Sullivan’s hand feebly. With tear-rimmed eyes, she spoke in a shaky voice. “Sullivan, I feel so dizzy and awful. Can you stay with me a little while?” She looked past the crowd to cast a glance in my direction. Lena raised her voice, her tone choked with sobs. “Odette, I’m so scared. I feel much safer with Sullivan next to me. “Would you mind letting him stay with me for a bit? Pretty please…” Sullivan’s voice practically melted. “Just hold on a moment, Odette. Lena needs me right now. It’ll only be a minute.” I didn’t offer a reply.

The tormenting pain vanished all at once. My body had never felt lighter. Confused, I looked around in a daze, only to realize I was hovering in midair. I lowered my gaze and spotted a she-wolf who looked just like me lying on the examination table in the corner. However, the she-wolf looked rather terrifying. Her lips were caked with dried blood, her face ashen gray, her neck flopped limply to one side, and her abdomen was swollen, showing no signs of life. It hit me that I was dead. No one was aware, though. Wynne and Sullivan had severed their mind links with me a long time ago. I let out a wry chuckle. Meanwhile, Lena sat propped on a huge, comfortable bed in the VIP section of the room. She snuggled up against Wynne, her cheeks rosy pink and her eyes bright. Wynne carefully adjusted the flow rate of the transfusion for her. “It’ll be over before you know it. My little Lena is the bravest.” Standing at the foot of the bed, Sullivan tucked Lena’s feet in
