LOGINEvelina’s POV
The food tray sat untouched beside my bed. I had already told the nurse I wasn't hungry, but she kept coming back. First with soup, then bread, and now a bowl of rice with something warm on the side. "Please eat a little, Miss Evelina." "I'll eat later." "You said that earlier." I looked at the tray. "I had breakfast yesterday." The nurse stopped trying to convince me. She picked up the empty glass and left, but she returned a few minutes later with Doctor Hart. "You're still refusing food?" she asked. "I'm not hungry." Doctor Hart pulled a chair closer. "You don't have to finish everything. Just try a few bites." I didn't answer. She looked at the tray, then at me. "Would you rather have something else?" "No, thank you." She didn't argue. Instead, she sat beside the bed and waited until I finally picked up the spoon. I managed two bites before putting it down. "That's enough for now," she said. I thought she would leave, but her eyes moved to my arm. My sleeve had slipped down while I was eating. "May I see that?" I pulled the fabric back over my wrist. "It's nothing." Doctor Hart didn't reach for me. "I only want to look." I hesitated, then slowly pushed my sleeve up. There were old marks along my arm. Some were pale. Others were darker and harder to hide. I had stopped looking at them a long time ago. The doctor examined them without touching. "These are old." Alistair's voice came from the doorway. "What do you mean, old?" I hadn't noticed him enter. He was standing behind Doctor Hart, staring at my arm. "Months," the doctor replied. "Some, years." Alistair stepped closer. "How did she get those?" "I fell," I said. He looked at me. "You fell?" I lowered my sleeve. "Evelina, those are cigarette burns." Nobody spoke. I knew what he was looking at. I remembered every one of them. I also remembered how many times I had been told to keep quiet. Alistair moved closer again. "Who did that to you?" I turned my face away. "Answer me." "I said I fell." "Don't lie to me." I almost laughed, but there was nothing funny about it. He had spent two years believing I was guilty. He had never come to see me. He had never asked what happened inside that prison. Now he wanted answers because he had finally seen the marks. I pulled the blanket over my arm. "Can I rest now?" "Evelina" "That's enough, Alistair." Theron's voice came from behind him. He had entered without making much noise. His eyes moved from Alistair to me, then to the food tray. "Don't force her." Alistair turned. "I'm trying to find out what happened." "Then stop demanding answers while she's clearly uncomfortable." "She's my sister." Theron didn't raise his voice. "Then you should know when to leave her alone." Alistair's jaw tightened, but he stepped back. Doctor Hart stood and gathered her things. Before leaving, she reminded me to eat when I could. I nodded, though I wasn't sure I would. Theron stayed near the door. "Do you need anything?" "No." "Food? Medicine? Another room?" I shook my head. He didn't keep asking. He only told the nurse to make sure I had what I needed, then left with Doctor Hart. Alistair was the last one outside. He looked at me once more before closing the door. I waited until his footsteps disappeared. The food was getting cold. I picked up the spoon again and forced myself to eat another bite. I still had one reason to stay in this house. Mother. I wanted to see her get better. I wanted to know she could take her medicine without struggling and sleep through the night without pain. After that, I would leave. I didn't know where I would go yet. I only knew I couldn't keep living here as if nothing had happened. A little later, I heard voices outside. "Those marks weren't from one accident," Doctor Hart said. Alistair answered, but I couldn't make out his words. Then the doctor spoke again. "You should find out what happened during those two years." I sat quietly on the bed. For once, they had seen something they couldn't explain away. But I wasn't going to tell them what they had refused to ask about when I needed them most.Aurelia’s POVI noticed it during breakfast.Alpha Ronan wasn't looking at me.He was listening to Alistair discuss the eastern border, but his attention kept drifting toward the entrance. I followed his gaze and saw Evelina passing by with a basket of folded linens. She didn't stop. She didn't even glance at the table.Still, Ronan watched until she disappeared.I lowered my cup."Is something wrong, Alpha Ronan?"His eyes returned to me. "No. You were saying?"I smiled. "I was asking whether you would like to visit the garden after breakfast. Mother wanted to show you the new greenhouse.""That would be fine."Alistair looked pleased.I smiled too.It was a small thing. Nothing worth worrying about. At least, that's what I told myself. After breakfast, I went to Mother's room. She was sitting by the window, looking through a magazine. Her medicine case rested on the bedside table."Mother, did you sleep well?"She smiled when she saw me. "Much better, dear."I kissed her forehead an
Evelina’s POVI was halfway down the stairs when I heard Aurelia laughing. It came from the sitting room.I stopped. Not because I wanted to listen. I had a basket of clean towels in my arms, and the shortest way to Mother's room was through that hallway."Alpha Ronan said he might stay another day," Aurelia said.Mother sounded pleased. "That's wonderful, dear."Alistair chuckled. "He seems interested in the alliance.""Don't get ahead of yourself," Mother said, though she sounded just as excited.I continued walking.A servant passed me and opened the sitting room door. I stepped aside to let her through."Evelina."Alistair had noticed me."Yes, Alpha?"His expression tightened at the title. He still hadn't gotten used to hearing it from me."Mother needs those towels?""Yes.""Then take them upstairs. We have guests."I nodded and went on.Nobody asked me to stay. That afternoon, I helped the nurse prepare Mother's things for her next appointment. Her medicine was arranged on the
Ronan’s POVThe Marlowe Pack had prepared half the estate for my arrival.Flowers lined the entrance. Servants stood in neat rows, and the dining hall had been arranged for a formal welcome.I wasn't there for the decorations.I was there to meet Aurelia Marlowe. My father had been discussing an alliance with the Marlowes for months. Their territory was valuable, and their family had strong ties with several neighboring packs. A marriage between me and their biological daughter would make the agreement stronger.I had agreed to meet her.Nothing more."Alpha Ronan. Welcome to our home."Alistair Marlowe approached with a polite smile. Beside him stood an elegant woman in a pale blue dress.Aurelia."Thank you for having me," I said. She lowered her head slightly. "It's an honor to meet you, Alpha Ronan."Her voice was soft. Her smile was pleasant. She looked exactly like the kind of woman her family had described."Please, come inside," Alistair said. "My mother is waiting."We entere
Theron’s POVThe prison warden took too long to answer.I stood beside the desk, reading the same report for the third time. The file contained Evelina Marlowe's sentence, release date, and a list of disciplinary incidents. It said nothing useful about her injuries."Your Majesty, the warden is on the line."I took the receiver."This is Theron Valtieri."There was a pause."Your Majesty. How may I assist you?""I want the complete medical records of Evelina Marlowe. Every examination, every injury, every treatment during her two years there.""Of course. We sent the official records with her release documents.""What you sent is incomplete."Another pause."I'll have my staff check.""Do that. And explain why several dates in the disciplinary report have no matching medical entries."The warden cleared his throat."I would need to review the archive.""Then review it."I ended the call.My aide stood near the door, holding another folder."The prison confirmed that her records are st
Evelina’s POVMother's medicine was late.I noticed it when I passed her room. The nurse was checking the bottles on the bedside table, looking through the labels."Is something wrong?" I asked. She glanced at me. "Miss Aurelia usually prepares these.""I know. What time is the next dose?"The nurse checked the small chart. "It should have been given twenty minutes ago."I looked at the bottle. The label was familiar. So was the dosage. Mother used to take it after breakfast, never before. It upset her stomach otherwise."She hasn't eaten much," I said. "Give her something light first."The nurse hesitated. "I'll ask Miss Aurelia.""You don't have to. I can bring her some soup."I went to the kitchen before she could answer. The cook looked surprised when I asked for Mother's usual vegetable soup. He searched through the kitchen notes, then shook his head."We've been following Miss Aurelia's meal plan.""Does Mother still eat the same things?""Some of them. But Miss Aurelia changed
Theron’s POVThe Marlowes were pretending. Badly.Breakfast was almost over when I noticed Evelina's plate.Still full. She sat at the far end of the table, quiet while the others talked. Cecilia asked Aurelia about her medicine. Alistair discussed the day's schedule.Evelina reached for the water pitcher."I can get it," Aurelia said, taking it from her.Evelina pulled her hand back. That was it. No argument. No complaint. She picked up her glass and drank.I looked at her plate again."Have you eaten?" I asked. She looked up. "Yes, Your Majesty.""Your plate says otherwise."Her fingers tightened around the glass."I'm not very hungry."I didn't press her. She looked ready to leave, and I had no interest in making her breakfast another reason to fear speaking.Alistair stood as soon as Cecilia finished her tea."Mother, I'll see you later."Aurelia helped Cecilia out of her chair. Evelina waited until they had left before standing. She took her plate.A servant hurried over. "I'll h
