Theron’s POV

The prison warden took too long to answer.

I stood beside the desk, reading the same report for the third time. The file contained Evelina Marlowe's sentence, release date, and a list of disciplinary incidents.

It said nothing useful about her injuries.

"Your Majesty, the warden is on the line."

I took the receiver.

"This is Theron Valtieri."

There was a pause.

"Your Majesty. How may I assist you?"

"I want the complete medical records of Evelina Marlowe. Every examination, every injury, every treatment during her two years there."

"Of course. We sent the official records with her release documents."

"What you sent is incomplete."

Another pause.

"I'll have my staff check."

"Do that. And explain why several dates in the disciplinary report have no matching medical entries."

The warden cleared his throat.

"I would need to review the archive."

"Then review it."

I ended the call.

My aide stood near the door, holding another folder.

"The prison confirmed that her records are stored separately. They said it may take a few days."

"Tell them they have until tomorrow."

He placed the folder on my desk.

"This is the information we found about her shifting history."

I opened it.

There wasn't much. The Marlowe Pack had no recent record of Evelina participating in training or public shifts. The prison records listed her wolf as weak, but there was no proper assessment attached.

"Did she shift before going to prison?"

"According to the Pack, yes. Regularly."

"And after?"

"No confirmed record."

I shut the folder.

A wolf could become weak after prolonged illness or injury. But two years without a proper assessment was unacceptable.

"Arrange for a healer to examine her."

"Should we inform Alpha Marlowe?"

"No."

My aide nodded.

I looked back at the adoption document. The copy had been prepared years after Evelina joined the Marlowe family. It carried the signatures of two witnesses, but the original registration number was missing.

I tapped the paper.

"Find the office that processed this adoption."

"Yes, Your Majesty."

"And don't contact the Marlowes about it."

He left.

Later that afternoon, I saw Evelina in the east corridor.

She was carrying a folded blanket. A servant walked past her with a basket of fresh linens, barely acknowledging her.

"Evelina."

She stopped.

"Your Majesty."

"You don't need to address me that way."

She adjusted the blanket in her arms. "What should I call you?"

"Theron is fine."

She nodded, but didn't use my name.

I looked at her hands. There were faint marks near her wrists. She kept her sleeves pulled down even though the corridor was warm.

"Have you seen a healer since your release?"

"Doctor Hart examined me."

"That wasn't what I asked."

Her expression barely changed.

"No."

"Would you agree to another examination?"

"Why?"

"Your prison records are incomplete."

She looked at me for a moment.

Then she asked, "Did they tell you I was difficult?"

"No."

"That I caused trouble?"

"I didn't ask them that."

She lowered her eyes.

"People usually ask about that first."

I said nothing.

She shifted the blanket to her other arm. The movement seemed uncomfortable, but she didn't complain.

"I have to bring this to Mother," she said.

I stepped aside.

She walked past me without waiting for permission.

I watched until she disappeared around the corner.

That evening, my aide returned with a short report.

"The prison archive has located two additional documents. One is a medical request. The other is a disciplinary notice."

"Read them."

"The medical request was submitted after an incident involving Miss Marlowe. It was marked as received, but there's no record of a physician examining her."

"And the disciplinary notice?"

"It was filed the same day."

I held out my hand.

He gave me the papers.

The medical request was brief. It mentioned an injury and asked for an examination.

There was no diagnosis. No treatment.

Only a signature confirming that the request had been received.

I read the date.

Then I looked at the disciplinary notice.

The same date.

"What happened to her?" my aide asked quietly.

I placed both papers on the desk.

"Someone needs to answer that."

My aide waited.

I picked up the receiver again.

"Contact the prison. I want the names of everyone who handled her case."

"All of them?"

"Every name."

I ended the call.

The Marlowes had told me Evelina was guilty. The court had sentenced her. The prison had supposedly carried out that sentence.

But someone had requested medical help for her.

And someone had ignored it.

I wanted to know who.

Aurelia’s POVI noticed it during breakfast.Alpha Ronan wasn't looking at me.He was listening to Alistair discuss the eastern border, but his attention kept drifting toward the entrance. I followed his gaze and saw Evelina passing by with a basket of folded linens. She didn't stop. She didn't even glance at the table.Still, Ronan watched until she disappeared.I lowered my cup."Is something wrong, Alpha Ronan?"His eyes returned to me. "No. You were saying?"I smiled. "I was asking whether you would like to visit the garden after breakfast. Mother wanted to show you the new greenhouse.""That would be fine."Alistair looked pleased.I smiled too.It was a small thing. Nothing worth worrying about. At least, that's what I told myself. After breakfast, I went to Mother's room. She was sitting by the window, looking through a magazine. Her medicine case rested on the bedside table."Mother, did you sleep well?"She smiled when she saw me. "Much better, dear."I kissed her forehead an

Evelina’s POVI was halfway down the stairs when I heard Aurelia laughing. It came from the sitting room.I stopped. Not because I wanted to listen. I had a basket of clean towels in my arms, and the shortest way to Mother's room was through that hallway."Alpha Ronan said he might stay another day," Aurelia said.Mother sounded pleased. "That's wonderful, dear."Alistair chuckled. "He seems interested in the alliance.""Don't get ahead of yourself," Mother said, though she sounded just as excited.I continued walking.A servant passed me and opened the sitting room door. I stepped aside to let her through."Evelina."Alistair had noticed me."Yes, Alpha?"His expression tightened at the title. He still hadn't gotten used to hearing it from me."Mother needs those towels?""Yes.""Then take them upstairs. We have guests."I nodded and went on.Nobody asked me to stay. That afternoon, I helped the nurse prepare Mother's things for her next appointment. Her medicine was arranged on the

Ronan’s POVThe Marlowe Pack had prepared half the estate for my arrival.Flowers lined the entrance. Servants stood in neat rows, and the dining hall had been arranged for a formal welcome.I wasn't there for the decorations.I was there to meet Aurelia Marlowe. My father had been discussing an alliance with the Marlowes for months. Their territory was valuable, and their family had strong ties with several neighboring packs. A marriage between me and their biological daughter would make the agreement stronger.I had agreed to meet her.Nothing more."Alpha Ronan. Welcome to our home."Alistair Marlowe approached with a polite smile. Beside him stood an elegant woman in a pale blue dress.Aurelia."Thank you for having me," I said. She lowered her head slightly. "It's an honor to meet you, Alpha Ronan."Her voice was soft. Her smile was pleasant. She looked exactly like the kind of woman her family had described."Please, come inside," Alistair said. "My mother is waiting."We entere

Evelina’s POVMother's medicine was late.I noticed it when I passed her room. The nurse was checking the bottles on the bedside table, looking through the labels."Is something wrong?" I asked. She glanced at me. "Miss Aurelia usually prepares these.""I know. What time is the next dose?"The nurse checked the small chart. "It should have been given twenty minutes ago."I looked at the bottle. The label was familiar. So was the dosage. Mother used to take it after breakfast, never before. It upset her stomach otherwise."She hasn't eaten much," I said. "Give her something light first."The nurse hesitated. "I'll ask Miss Aurelia.""You don't have to. I can bring her some soup."I went to the kitchen before she could answer. The cook looked surprised when I asked for Mother's usual vegetable soup. He searched through the kitchen notes, then shook his head."We've been following Miss Aurelia's meal plan.""Does Mother still eat the same things?""Some of them. But Miss Aurelia changed

Theron’s POVThe Marlowes were pretending. Badly.Breakfast was almost over when I noticed Evelina's plate.Still full. She sat at the far end of the table, quiet while the others talked. Cecilia asked Aurelia about her medicine. Alistair discussed the day's schedule.Evelina reached for the water pitcher."I can get it," Aurelia said, taking it from her.Evelina pulled her hand back. That was it. No argument. No complaint. She picked up her glass and drank.I looked at her plate again."Have you eaten?" I asked. She looked up. "Yes, Your Majesty.""Your plate says otherwise."Her fingers tightened around the glass."I'm not very hungry."I didn't press her. She looked ready to leave, and I had no interest in making her breakfast another reason to fear speaking.Alistair stood as soon as Cecilia finished her tea."Mother, I'll see you later."Aurelia helped Cecilia out of her chair. Evelina waited until they had left before standing. She took her plate.A servant hurried over. "I'll h
