Chapter 2

Author: Not Drunk
"What's Lena doing? She knows you're home. Why hasn't she come down to say hi?"

Mom grumbled as she led Sophie inside.

"Do you still have enough spending money? I'll send you some more."

Sophie pouted and said something I didn't catch.

But the smile on her face was so glaring I wanted to rip it apart.

"Lena! Lena!"

I came downstairs, and Mom waved me over.

"You didn't come home for Christmas, so I forgot to give you your money."

She pulled crisp new money from her pocket: six one-dollar bills and six dimes.

"You can't find crisp small bills anymore. I had to go to several banks.

"Be a good girl and stop thinking about Sophie's gift money."

Mom patted my head, then quickly pulled her hand away.

"You were born unlucky. No amount of money will stay with you. I don't want to see anything happen to you again."

I pressed my lips together and took the money, wanting to say something.

Mom, why did you lie to me?

Mom, am I not your own daughter?

"Mom, why..."

Before I could finish, Sophie laughed and pulled Mom's attention away.

"Mom, how come you're only giving Lena money and not me?"

She made a cute face, and when she looked at me, her eyes were full of condescending pity.

Mom beamed and pulled out another thick envelope for her. "As if I'd leave you out! We gave you six hundred and sixty thousand at Christmas. Here's another sixty-six thousand.

"Spending money. Go buy yourself some new clothes."

I stared at the thick stack of bills and felt dizzy.

Five years ago, I'd snatched one of Sophie's gift envelopes.

I remembered it clearly. She'd piled her envelopes on the coffee table and was counting the bills one by one.

Before I knew what I was doing, I reached out and took the thinnest one.

I hid in my room and counted it again and again. Ten hundred-dollar bills. A thousand dollars.

I tucked the money under my pillow and fell asleep smiling.

The next day, I broke out in hives all over. My throat swelled so badly I went into respiratory failure, and I spent three days in the ICU.

When I woke up, I believed every word Mom had said, and I gave the envelope back to Sophie in tears.

I believed I was born unlucky, that money would never stay with me, that the $6.60 curse was real.

But now, looking at the money in Sophie's hand and remembering what my parents had said, I felt dazed.

Sixty-six thousand.

How many $6.60s was that?

I couldn't work it out, just like I couldn't work out what all those years of suffering had been for.

"Sweetheart, what were you going to say?"

Mom's voice cut into my thoughts.

I wanted answers, but I didn't know how to begin.

"Fine, fine. If it's nothing, go bring the fruit out from the kitchen."

I snapped out of it and drifted toward the kitchen.

Cherries, strawberries, and blueberries, all Sophie's favorites.

She picked up a strawberry, bit off the tip, and casually held the rest out to me.

"Here, Lena. You can have the bottom."

I didn't move. I just stared at her slender fingers, nothing like my own cracked hands.

"Lena? Hello?"

Sophie waved a finger impatiently in front of my eyes and shoved the strawberry bottom at me.

"Don't act like you're the victim here. I'm doing this for your own good.

"It's not my fault you were born unlucky and good things aren't meant for you."

Hearing that, Mom shot me a disapproving look.

"Lena, what's wrong with you? Sophie's looking out for you!"

I pretended not to hear and grabbed the strawberries off the table, stuffing one after another into my mouth.

They were so sweet.

So sweet that tears rolled down my face.

I'd just stepped out the door when my parents hurried back with Sophie.Dad's face was full of rage, and he started yelling before he even reached me."Lena, what the hell are you trying to do?"I brought you into this world and raised you, and this is how you stab me in the back?"It was laughable. How could he say that with such righteous conviction? He'd never once acted like a father, yet now he was talking as if he'd done me some huge favor."If you walk out of this house today, don't you ever come back!"Fine by me. I didn't want to come back anyway.I walked fast, desperate to get away from that house.Standing at the bus station and watching people come and go, I felt a little lost.I didn't have a home anymore. Where was I supposed to go?Suddenly, Sophie showed up, still in her party dress."Lena."If you leave, don't ever come back."I nodded carelessly and kept studying the route signs.Sophie was still chattering away beside me."Dad says I'm the only daug

I clutched my stomach and burst out laughing."Sometimes I was so jealous of Sophie. I kept wondering why you were so good to her."So I saved up and got a DNA test. It turned out you really are my biological parents."And Sophie really isn't related to you by blood."All I could do was keep telling myself that this was just my lot in life."I was born unlucky, after all. Good things just weren't meant for me.But just as I'd accepted it and gone numb, fate played a cruel joke on me.I pulled a small envelope from my pocket. Inside was a crisp hundred-dollar bill."That pays back what I owe you."From now on, I'm not a Hart anymore. Just pretend you never had this daughter."I dropped the flimsy bill and turned to leave.Dad strode after me and grabbed my hand.Don't get the wrong idea. He wasn't sorry to see me go.His face twisted as he glared at the bill. "Lena, where did you get that money?"Did you steal it from Sophie?"How many times have I told you? You were born

Sophie went pale and stumbled backward, knocking over the champagne tower behind her.Broken glass grazed my ankle, but I didn't feel a thing."Lena, have you lost your mind?"Mom rushed at me and tried to grab my phone.I didn't resist. I handed it over.I watched Dad slam the phone onto the floor and grind it under his shoe.Only when the sound cut off did my parents force a few awkward laughs, as if nothing had happened."Sorry you all had to see that."This girl has been jealous of how well we treat Sophie since she was little. We don't know how she turned out like this. We must have failed her somewhere."Dad sighed, and every word made it sound like I was the problem.I didn't say anything. I just stood there.I wanted to see what else they could possibly say.But they ignored me and left me standing alone on the stage. No apology. No explanation. They were too busy fussing over Sophie, afraid the scene might scar her.Suddenly, the ballroom speakers crackled to li

It was covered in so many diamonds it nearly blinded me.And the price tag, with its endless string of zeros, made my head spin too.I envied her, but I'd never dared to dream of anything like that.I was afraid of dying. I wanted to live.My life might not be worth much, but I still wanted to feel the spring breeze.I closed my eyes, ignored my hunger, and tried desperately to fall asleep.I had a dream.I dreamed I snatched Sophie's gif

Smack!Mom slapped me across the face."Lena! Do you ever listen to a word I say?"How many times have I told you? You were born unlucky. You can't eat nice things like this!"Do you want to end up in the ICU again and worry your dad and me to death?"I kept wolfing them down, strawberry juice smeared around my mouth.I didn't stop until my stomach turned. Then I threw up every last strawberry."For heaven's sake! What a waste of good fruit!"Mom covered her nose in disgust, then patted my back gently."Sweetheart, why won't you listen to me?"You're my own daughter. Would I ever lie to you?"That was exactly what I wanted to ask.I'm your own daughter. So why would you treat me like this?My voice came out hoarse. I'd barely gotten out the word "why."Mom frowned. "Why what?""Why did you lie..."But before I could finish, Sophie cut me off."Mom, my birthday portrait came!"Can Lena hang it on the wall for me?"Mom nodded and directed me to hang Sophie's photo in t
