Chapter 3

Author: Not Drunk
Smack!

Mom slapped me across the face.

"Lena! Do you ever listen to a word I say?

"How many times have I told you? You were born unlucky. You can't eat nice things like this!

"Do you want to end up in the ICU again and worry your dad and me to death?"

I kept wolfing them down, strawberry juice smeared around my mouth.

I didn't stop until my stomach turned. Then I threw up every last strawberry.

"For heaven's sake! What a waste of good fruit!"

Mom covered her nose in disgust, then patted my back gently.

"Sweetheart, why won't you listen to me?

"You're my own daughter. Would I ever lie to you?"

That was exactly what I wanted to ask.

I'm your own daughter. So why would you treat me like this?

My voice came out hoarse. I'd barely gotten out the word "why."

Mom frowned. "Why what?"

"Why did you lie..."

But before I could finish, Sophie cut me off.

"Mom, my birthday portrait came!

"Can Lena hang it on the wall for me?"

Mom nodded and directed me to hang Sophie's photo in the middle of the wall.

I looked across the wall. Every photo on it was a portrait of Sophie.

Every year on her birthday, my parents took her to have princess portraits done: white princess gowns, diamond tiaras, and my parents beside her.

Suddenly, my eyes stopped on the corner.

It was the only photo of me, a family portrait of the four of us.

It was taken a few years ago. I couldn't remember exactly when.

All I remembered was Sophie sitting in the middle with Mom and Dad on either side, arms around her, all of them beaming.

I stood off to the side in Sophie's hand-me-downs, silent.

The photographer asked me to move in a little closer.

I'd barely shifted when Mom glared at me. "Stay right there. Don't block Sophie."

I stood there awkwardly, frozen stiff.

Later, the family portrait gathered dust, hanging all alone in the corner.

Just like me.

I stared at it until my dry eyes ached, but I couldn't squeeze out a single tear.

I'd told myself long ago that tears were the most useless thing in the world.

They couldn't fill my stomach, and they couldn't make my parents love me.

So I made it a habit. No matter how hard things got, I never cried.

"Lena, stop daydreaming.

"Go buy a bottle of soy sauce, and make sure it's the brand Sophie likes."

Mom waved me off.

I left without a word.

The soy sauce cost seven dollars, and I didn't have enough money on me to pay for it.

Luckily, the store owner recognized me and let me put it on a tab.

When I got back, the front door was ajar.

I was about to push it open when I heard Mom and Sophie talking.

"Your sister's acting strange today. You don't think she suspects something, do you?

"Sophie, you didn't let anything slip, did you?"

Sophie shook her head, idly blowing on her fresh manicure.

"Mom, that's easy.

"Just slip something into her food again tonight so she has a reaction.

"You promised you'd spoil me and love me forever! You have to keep your word!"

Sophie pouted, playing the sweet little girl.

Mom stroked her hair helplessly and agreed.

I stood frozen where I was, hollow inside.

So they'd seen my hesitation all along and simply chosen to ignore it.

I silently asked myself one question.

Was there any reason left to stay in a home like this?

But what?I suddenly realized that the things I'd once thought I'd never get over were already starting to blur.I'd made it to a bigger city, somewhere the Harts would never find me.That was enough. That was all I needed.A flicker of heartache crossed Paige's face. She gave me a gentle hug and couldn't stop reassuring me."You can go back to school, and you can go to college too."As long as you want to."I nodded, my eyes lighting up.Paige helped me enroll in an adult education program.Every day was just classes, reading, and writing. I didn't have to scheme or wonder how I was going to survive. All I had to do was study. In one year, I finished all the middle and high school coursework, earned my GED, and signed up for the SAT.My teachers praised me again and again and said I had real promise.Paige and her colleagues often came by with armfuls of groceries and supplies, worried I wasn't eating enough.Little by little, my face filled out and got its color back.

I'd just stepped out the door when my parents hurried back with Sophie.Dad's face was full of rage, and he started yelling before he even reached me."Lena, what the hell are you trying to do?"I brought you into this world and raised you, and this is how you stab me in the back?"It was laughable. How could he say that with such righteous conviction? He'd never once acted like a father, yet now he was talking as if he'd done me some huge favor."If you walk out of this house today, don't you ever come back!"Fine by me. I didn't want to come back anyway.I walked fast, desperate to get away from that house.Standing at the bus station and watching people come and go, I felt a little lost.I didn't have a home anymore. Where was I supposed to go?Suddenly, Sophie showed up, still in her party dress."Lena."If you leave, don't ever come back."I nodded carelessly and kept studying the route signs.Sophie was still chattering away beside me."Dad says I'm the only daug

I clutched my stomach and burst out laughing."Sometimes I was so jealous of Sophie. I kept wondering why you were so good to her."So I saved up and got a DNA test. It turned out you really are my biological parents."And Sophie really isn't related to you by blood."All I could do was keep telling myself that this was just my lot in life."I was born unlucky, after all. Good things just weren't meant for me.But just as I'd accepted it and gone numb, fate played a cruel joke on me.I pulled a small envelope from my pocket. Inside was a crisp hundred-dollar bill."That pays back what I owe you."From now on, I'm not a Hart anymore. Just pretend you never had this daughter."I dropped the flimsy bill and turned to leave.Dad strode after me and grabbed my hand.Don't get the wrong idea. He wasn't sorry to see me go.His face twisted as he glared at the bill. "Lena, where did you get that money?"Did you steal it from Sophie?"How many times have I told you? You were born

Sophie went pale and stumbled backward, knocking over the champagne tower behind her.Broken glass grazed my ankle, but I didn't feel a thing."Lena, have you lost your mind?"Mom rushed at me and tried to grab my phone.I didn't resist. I handed it over.I watched Dad slam the phone onto the floor and grind it under his shoe.Only when the sound cut off did my parents force a few awkward laughs, as if nothing had happened."Sorry you all had to see that."This girl has been jealous of how well we treat Sophie since she was little. We don't know how she turned out like this. We must have failed her somewhere."Dad sighed, and every word made it sound like I was the problem.I didn't say anything. I just stood there.I wanted to see what else they could possibly say.But they ignored me and left me standing alone on the stage. No apology. No explanation. They were too busy fussing over Sophie, afraid the scene might scar her.Suddenly, the ballroom speakers crackled to li

I didn't know the answer.I walked into the house as if nothing had happened and didn't touch a single thing.Even when Dad came home from work, I stayed in my tiny room and pretended to be asleep.Downstairs, they were in the middle of a heated discussion about Sophie's eighteenth birthday party the next day.Mom had booked thirty tables at the most expensive hotel in town. She'd invited almost everyone she knew and told them a month in advance that they absolutely had to come.Sophie's gown had been flown in from New York.I'd seen it. It was covered in so many diamonds it nearly blinded me.And the price tag, with its endless string of zeros, made my head spin too.I envied her, but I'd never dared to dream of anything like that.I was afraid of dying. I wanted to live.My life might not be worth much, but I still wanted to feel the spring breeze.I closed my eyes, ignored my hunger, and tried desperately to fall asleep.I had a dream.I dreamed I snatched Sophie's gif
