Mom sagged in her chair, staring blankly at the table.

  • The Daughter They Erased   Chapter 9

Two weeks after the kidnappers were caught, the verdict came down.In court, the kidnappers showed no remorse at all. They insisted, "We didn't mean to kill her! How were we supposed to know she was a head case?"We beat her with the iron bar, and she didn't cry or make a fuss. She just kept her hands clamped over her mouth."Right before she stopped breathing, she was still mumbling something like, 'Sorry, Jason. My brain is broken. I didn't mean to score an eight.' She was crazy."No wonder her own family couldn't stand her!"When Jason heard that, he collapsed in the aisle of the public gallery. He clawed at the floor tiles as fat tears splashed down, and a wail of grief tore from his throat.Mom's eyes rolled back, and she passed out, convulsing.Caleb covered his face and smashed his forehead against the bench in front of him until blood ran down. Both men were sentenced to death on the spot. But for the ones left alive, a life sentence had only just begun. That night,

The lieutenant lowered his eyes to the bloodstained scrap in his hand.Slowly, word by word, he read it aloud."Mom doesn't like hearing me talk. Caleb thinks I'm an embarrassment.""I can't let Mom hear my voice. She'll get angry."The conference room went deathly silent.Holloway looked up, his icy gaze sweeping over everyone in the room."We interrogated the two kidnappers all night."They confessed that as soon as they tied Lily up in the basement, they threatened her with an iron bar to make her call home for money."But she refused to give them the number no matter what. She just kept shaking her head."He pushed the scrap of paper toward Mom, his voice trembling slightly."They said they broke three of her ribs with that iron bar."But even when she was rolling on the floor in pain, she kept her hands clamped over her mouth. She didn't make a single sound."They thought she was bad luck. They called her a crazy mute who couldn't even scream, and then they just dumped

When he saw the scene in front of him, his brows knitted tightly."Mrs. Carter, Caleb, what's going on?"The police said on the phone that something happened to Lily? What is she throwing a fit about now?"Jason walked up to the table, still speaking with the same condescension as always."Honestly, you guys just let her do what

The sneer froze on Caleb's face.He looked at the officers' crisp uniforms and took half a step back."Yes... I'm her brother. What's going on?"The two officers exchanged a glance. One of them stepped forward and held out a clear evidence bag."We recovered the body of an unidentified young woman from an abandoned drainage ditch on the outskirts of town."A DNA database match identified her as Lily Carter."The officer's voice was completely flat."Please come with us to the station to identify the body."Crash! The phone in Mom's hand smashed onto the marble floor. On the video call, Emma was still asking, "Mom? What's wrong?""That's impossible."Caleb snapped out of it and shoved the officer's hand away."You've got it wrong! She's got money on her. She's definitely holed up in some motel or at a friend's place!"She's just trying to scare us like this! It's not like she hasn't faked being sick before!"The officer frowned, his tone stern."Whether she's trying to s

They searched every corner of the apartment, but I was nowhere to be found. There was even a fine layer of dust on the coffee table. Nobody had been home for days. The smile froze on Caleb's face. He yanked open my closet door.My clothes were all there. So was my suitcase.Mom panicked.Without even taking off her heels, she rushed into the room and started searching everywhere."Lily? Lily!"The apartment was silent.Mom's hands started to shake. She grabbed Caleb's arm."She never came back? It's been two days!"That highway interchange is so far from here. Where did she go?"Her voice was thick with tears."She's sick! She can't find her way anywhere! What if she really forgot the way home?"I shouldn't have made her get out of the car... I shouldn't have left her on the side of the road..."Caleb's face went pale too.He pulled out his phone and fumbled to dial my number."We're sorry. The number you have dialed is currently unavailable."The robotic female voice

Today was the day the whole family was driving Emma to Boston for college.I sat obediently in the back seat, so happy.Because it was the first time in months they'd been willing to take me anywhere with them.Mom sat in the passenger seat and turned around to give Emma gentle reminders."Take good care of yourself at college. If you run short on money, just tell me."As he drove, Caleb glanced at me in the rearview mirror."With your sister's old grades, she'd have gotten into Kingsley University, no problem."But since she chose to turn in a blank test, that's on her."You won't have your sister at school with you, so you'll need to keep your wits about you."Hearing that, I was stunned for a second, and then I burst out laughing."What are you guys talking about?"The entrance exam isn't for another two years!"Did Emma lie and tell you she got into Kingsley? Emma, you're such a joker, haha!"Screech! The moment the words left my mouth, Caleb slammed on the brakes.T
