Chapter 2

Autor: Arya
I went to school first thing the next morning.

Ms. Stouder motioned for me to take the chair across from her desk.

“Emma, you did it.”

“Your low-cost water filtration project took the top prize at the national youth science competition.”

“The foundation is covering your tuition, housing, and basic living expenses. I’m so proud of how far you’ve come.”

She hesitated before asking, “Are you sure you don’t want to tell your parents before you go?”

My fingers tightened in my lap.

The previous Wednesday had been my eighteenth birthday.

Mia had spent the entire week crying over her fight with Luke.

To cheer her up, my parents drove across Seattle for her favorite strawberry cake while Noah bought her gifts and Luke stayed home playing video games with her.

They spent the entire evening comforting Mia. Not one of them remembered my birthday.

Would a family like mine really care where I went?

“Emma?”

Ms. Stouder’s voice pulled me back.

“If you think your family will object, maybe you should still talk to them.”

“Going to university in another country is a big decision.”

I took a slow breath.

“I’ve already made up my mind. This is a decision I need to make for myself.”

She studied the resolve on my face and didn’t press me.

“All right. If you’re sure, I respect your choice.”

“Send me an email when you get to England.”

I thanked her and left the office.

The sunlight outside was painfully bright. I raised a hand to shield my eyes and realized they were damp.

I found a bench in the shade and took out my phone.

Mom had just uploaded a new post to Instagram. There were more than a dozen photos.

One showed them walking through the surf.

Another showed a table covered with seafood.

The last was a picture of Luke and Mia.

Luke was peeling a shrimp for her, his head bent in concentration. Mia smiled at him as if she had never been happier.

The caption read: [Finally got all my favorite people together. The perfect family vacation.]

Relatives filled the comments with likes and heart emojis.

My aunt asked, “Where’s Emma?”

Mom replied, “Emma prefers staying home to work on her research projects.”

A dull ache spread through my chest.

So that was all they knew about me.

They knew I was smart. It was the one fact they remembered whenever they wanted me to sacrifice something. But they had never asked what I was working toward.

They didn’t know I had spent three years designing a low-cost water filtration system.

They didn’t know the project had won a national youth science competition.

The work they had never once asked about had helped earn me a place at Cambridge.

I calmly liked Mom’s post, then closed Instagram.

Six more days, and I would finally be free of this place.

When I got home, I started cleaning, just as Noah had ordered.

I wiped down every corner of the living room before moving on to Mia’s bedroom.

Her room was large and south-facing, flooded with sunlight. Her closet was packed with the latest clothes.

Expensive skincare products and collectible Labubu figures covered her desk.

After mopping the floor, I noticed a velvet box on her nightstand.

The lid was slightly open, revealing a necklace set with a blue gemstone.

It was Luke’s birthday present to her.

I had seen that necklace once in a note on his phone.

He had labeled it Emma’s graduation present.

In the end, it had gone around Mia’s neck.

Luke had explained it away at the time.

“Emma, Mia really likes the necklace.”

“You hardly ever wear jewelry anyway. Just let her have it.”

“I’ll get you something better later.”

I hadn’t argued. I hadn’t cried. I had just stopped thinking of the necklace as mine.

I closed Mia’s door and returned to my converted storage room.

Lying on the hard mattress, I stared blankly at the ceiling.

If you expected nothing, you couldn’t be disappointed.

It had taken me three years to understand that.

Emma’s POVThe next day, the filtration system went online at the first temporary shelter. After finishing the field tests, I stepped outside the tent and found Mia waiting nearby. She was still beautiful, but the glow she had worn when everyone revolved around her was gone.I later heard that once I left, the family lost the person who had always cleaned up after them.Mia refused to live in a dorm, but she wouldn’t find an apartment herself. She fought with Luke over every small thing and expected the entire family to drop whatever they were doing to comfort her. The first time Noah refused to run an errand for her, she accused them all of not loving her anymore. They finally realized that her sweet, easygoing nature had depended on everyone giving her exactly what she wanted.None of that mattered to me now.“Emma.”Mia stepped into my path, and her eyes quickly filled with tears.I had watched that expression work for years. Whenever she looked even slightly hurt, everyone rushed t

Emma’s POVThree years later, I returned to Seattle with my research team.Wildfires had contaminated the drinking water in parts of the city. The local government planned to test our improved portable filtration system at several temporary shelters, and I was in charge of the field data and project presentation. As the plane landed, I looked out at the familiar skyline and felt none of the turmoil I had expected. The past three years had been good to me.I had completed most of my undergraduate coursework and become one of the youngest project leads in the lab. The device I had once built from secondhand parts had gone through dozens of redesigns and was now providing clean drinking water to communities in Africa.I was no longer the girl who slept in a storage room and measured every word before she spoke. Before returning, I had wondered whether being here would reopen old wounds. But when our car passed the coffee shop where I had worked to buy my white windbreaker, all I remembere

Emma’s POVI fastened Grandma’s bracelet around my wrist again. The cool forget-me-not charm brushed my skin, bringing back the words she had spoken before she died.“Emma, you’re smart and capable. One day, you need to live for yourself.”I finally was.Luke waited outside my college for an entire week.Every day, he emailed me. He began with the day we first met and worked his way through our childhood, memory by memory. He said he was sorry. He said Mia’s tears had clouded his judgment. He even offered to give up his place at Seattle University and move to England for me.I didn’t answer a single message. The first day, the sight of him outside the window still distracted me.By the third, I could leave through another door without feeling anything at all.Once, I had wanted nothing more than for him to choose me without hesitation. But devotion that arrived this late felt like nothing more than an intrusion. He didn’t understand that I hadn’t left to force anyone to choose between

Luke’s POVThe house sank into a gloom unlike anything they had known before.Emma’s mother kept wandering to the empty storage room. Her father stopped insisting that Emma was only throwing a tantrum, and Noah never mentioned the apartment again.Luke had no time to wait for them to understand what they had done. The moment the bracelet arrived from the hotel, he booked a flight to London.Emma’s mother told him to convince her daughter to come home. Noah gave him a bank card and repeatedly warned that England was expensive and Emma would eventually need their help.Luke said nothing. He closed his hand around the tiny forget-me-not charm and told himself that if he could just see Emma, he could still make things right. He would apologize. He would place the bracelet back in her hands and tell her that she was the only person he had ever truly loved. He would even stay in England if that was what it took for her to trust him again.Luke didn’t sleep during the ten-hour flight. He kept

Luke’s POVNoah gave a dismissive snort.“How much money could she possibly have? We’re the ones paying the rent. Once she calms down, she’ll call us.”Emma’s mother nodded.“She only wants us to panic. Don’t reward this behavior, or she’ll get worse.”Luke was the only one who didn’t agree. He stayed up all night checking every place Emma might have gone: the coffee shop, the school, the library she sometimes visited, even the cemetery where her grandmother was buried. There was no sign of her anywhere. The next morning, he went to the school and asked Ms. Stouder where Emma was.“I’m sorry, but I can’t disclose a student’s private information.”Ms. Stouder blocked the entrance to her office, her expression cool.“If Emma wanted you to know, she would have told you herself.”Luke tightened his grip on his car keys.“I just need to know she’s safe.”“She is.”Ms. Stouder studied him for several seconds, a cutting edge entering her voice.“And she’s finally somewhere people appreciate h

Luke’s POVIt was six in the evening when Luke returned from Hawaii with Mia and the rest of her family.Noah came through the door first, dragging two large suitcases behind him.“Finally. I’m exhausted.”He dropped the bags in the entryway and called upstairs.“Emma, come help us. Mia’s thirsty, so bring her a glass of water too.”The house remained silent.Emma’s mother frowned.“Wasn’t she supposed to look at apartments today? Why hasn’t she answered any of my messages?”Mia sank onto the couch and spoke in a small voice. “Do you think she’s still mad at me? This is all my fault. I lost Grandma’s bracelet.”Emma’s father patted her shoulder.“Don’t worry about it. She’s always had a mind of her own. She’ll come back once she’s done sulking.”Luke set the shopping bag on the coffee table.Inside was a pearl necklace he had bought in Hawaii. He had assumed that if he gave it to Emma and took her out to dinner, she would forgive him like she always did.She had always been so easy to
