Chapter 1

“Emma, why are you just standing there?”

My brother Noah’s impatient voice came from the doorway. He leaned against the frame with one hand.

“Mia hasn’t been feeling well. She can’t be out in the wind too long at the beach.”

“I couldn’t find that white windbreaker in your suitcase. Where did you put it?”

He spoke as if the jacket had belonged to Mia all along. But I had worked shifts at a coffee shop for a month to buy it with my own money.

“In the zippered pocket,” I said quietly.

Noah nodded and turned to leave, then stopped halfway down the hall.

“While we’re gone, give the whole house a good cleaning.”

“Especially Mia’s room. You know she’s allergic to dust.”

He didn’t bother hiding the distaste in his voice. I could have been the unpaid help instead of his sister.

Mom came out of her bedroom carrying Mia’s sun hat.

“Your brother’s right, Emma.”

“You’ve graduated. It’s not like you have anything else to do.”

“Make sure the house is clean by the time we get back.”

She paused, then added, “Oh, and Mia’s dress is still at the dry cleaner. Pick it up on Friday and hang it in her closet.”

The way Mom said it, every one of those chores was naturally my responsibility.

I didn’t have the energy to argue.

“Okay.”

Dad called for everyone to hurry up.

Luke was the last one out.

He used to be the first person to stand up for me whenever someone hurt me.

This time, he came over and lowered his voice.

“Emma, don’t make a scene.”

“You know Mia’s been under a lot of stress over school. She barely slept for weeks.”

“This trip is supposed to help her relax.”

He reached for my hair, as if he could still ruffle it the way he used to.

I tilted my head away.

His hand froze in midair. Annoyance flickered in his eyes before his expression smoothed over again.

“I’ll take you somewhere myself another time.”

“You’ve always been the understanding one. Can’t you just go along with it, for everyone’s sake?”

The understanding one.

That was what everyone called me whenever they wanted me to give something up for Mia.

My parents had favored her for as long as I could remember.

She was beautiful and affectionate, and she knew exactly when to smile, pout, or cry.

I was the clever one. The capable one.

Whenever I asked why Mia always got more, Mom gave me the same answer.

“Mia needs more attention. You’re smart, Emma. You’ll build a good life for yourself no matter what.”

Dad and Noah always agreed.

After years of hearing it, I had almost stopped questioning them.

And everyone expected me to accept it without complaint.

I lifted my chin slightly and forced back the sting in my eyes.

“I understand. Have a safe trip.”

Luke looked surprised, but only for a second. Then he nodded.

“Be good and wait for us at home.”

The door slammed shut behind him.

The entryway fell silent.

I stood there until my legs went numb.

My phone lit up with a notification from the airline.

Mom had canceled my ticket through the family account.

After the cancellation fee, there was hardly anything left to refund.

It didn’t matter anymore.

When I walked into the living room, I found the itinerary I had spent several nights putting together untouched on the coffee table.

I had marked the diving spot Noah wanted to visit, the best places for Mom to take pictures, and the fishing charter Dad wanted to book.

I had even listed the beaches Mia should avoid because she couldn’t stay out in the ocean breeze for too long.

Suddenly, all that effort felt pathetic.

I tore the itinerary into pieces, dropped them in the trash, and went back to my room.

It was barely a room at all.

When I was two, Mia had pouted, “I want a whole room for my princess dolls.”

So my parents turned the bedroom they had set aside for me into her playroom.

By the time I was old enough to need a room of my own, all that was left was this converted storage room.

I pulled an old suitcase from under the bed and began packing everything I owned.

My phone buzzed. The email was from Ms. Stouder, my college counselor.

[Emma, the final transcript I submitted has been approved, and Cambridge has officially confirmed your place.]

[Your funding through the foundation has also been finalized.]

[Could you come by tomorrow? I’d like to see you before you leave.]

I read the email twice. For the first time in months, the tension inside me eased.

I’ll be there tomorrow, I replied.

I tossed my phone onto the bed and glanced at the framed photograph in the corner of my desk.

Luke and I had taken it on his sixteenth birthday.

He was beaming at the camera. I was looking at him, my feelings written all over my face.

But he had worn those feelings down until there was nothing left.

I removed the photograph from the frame and dropped it in the trash.

Emma’s POVThe next day, the filtration system went online at the first temporary shelter. After finishing the field tests, I stepped outside the tent and found Mia waiting nearby. She was still beautiful, but the glow she had worn when everyone revolved around her was gone.I later heard that once I left, the family lost the person who had always cleaned up after them.Mia refused to live in a dorm, but she wouldn’t find an apartment herself. She fought with Luke over every small thing and expected the entire family to drop whatever they were doing to comfort her. The first time Noah refused to run an errand for her, she accused them all of not loving her anymore. They finally realized that her sweet, easygoing nature had depended on everyone giving her exactly what she wanted.None of that mattered to me now.“Emma.”Mia stepped into my path, and her eyes quickly filled with tears.I had watched that expression work for years. Whenever she looked even slightly hurt, everyone rushed t

Emma’s POVThree years later, I returned to Seattle with my research team.Wildfires had contaminated the drinking water in parts of the city. The local government planned to test our improved portable filtration system at several temporary shelters, and I was in charge of the field data and project presentation. As the plane landed, I looked out at the familiar skyline and felt none of the turmoil I had expected. The past three years had been good to me.I had completed most of my undergraduate coursework and become one of the youngest project leads in the lab. The device I had once built from secondhand parts had gone through dozens of redesigns and was now providing clean drinking water to communities in Africa.I was no longer the girl who slept in a storage room and measured every word before she spoke. Before returning, I had wondered whether being here would reopen old wounds. But when our car passed the coffee shop where I had worked to buy my white windbreaker, all I remembere

Emma’s POVI fastened Grandma’s bracelet around my wrist again. The cool forget-me-not charm brushed my skin, bringing back the words she had spoken before she died.“Emma, you’re smart and capable. One day, you need to live for yourself.”I finally was.Luke waited outside my college for an entire week.Every day, he emailed me. He began with the day we first met and worked his way through our childhood, memory by memory. He said he was sorry. He said Mia’s tears had clouded his judgment. He even offered to give up his place at Seattle University and move to England for me.I didn’t answer a single message. The first day, the sight of him outside the window still distracted me.By the third, I could leave through another door without feeling anything at all.Once, I had wanted nothing more than for him to choose me without hesitation. But devotion that arrived this late felt like nothing more than an intrusion. He didn’t understand that I hadn’t left to force anyone to choose between

Luke’s POVThe house sank into a gloom unlike anything they had known before.Emma’s mother kept wandering to the empty storage room. Her father stopped insisting that Emma was only throwing a tantrum, and Noah never mentioned the apartment again.Luke had no time to wait for them to understand what they had done. The moment the bracelet arrived from the hotel, he booked a flight to London.Emma’s mother told him to convince her daughter to come home. Noah gave him a bank card and repeatedly warned that England was expensive and Emma would eventually need their help.Luke said nothing. He closed his hand around the tiny forget-me-not charm and told himself that if he could just see Emma, he could still make things right. He would apologize. He would place the bracelet back in her hands and tell her that she was the only person he had ever truly loved. He would even stay in England if that was what it took for her to trust him again.Luke didn’t sleep during the ten-hour flight. He kept

Luke’s POVNoah gave a dismissive snort.“How much money could she possibly have? We’re the ones paying the rent. Once she calms down, she’ll call us.”Emma’s mother nodded.“She only wants us to panic. Don’t reward this behavior, or she’ll get worse.”Luke was the only one who didn’t agree. He stayed up all night checking every place Emma might have gone: the coffee shop, the school, the library she sometimes visited, even the cemetery where her grandmother was buried. There was no sign of her anywhere. The next morning, he went to the school and asked Ms. Stouder where Emma was.“I’m sorry, but I can’t disclose a student’s private information.”Ms. Stouder blocked the entrance to her office, her expression cool.“If Emma wanted you to know, she would have told you herself.”Luke tightened his grip on his car keys.“I just need to know she’s safe.”“She is.”Ms. Stouder studied him for several seconds, a cutting edge entering her voice.“And she’s finally somewhere people appreciate h

Luke’s POVIt was six in the evening when Luke returned from Hawaii with Mia and the rest of her family.Noah came through the door first, dragging two large suitcases behind him.“Finally. I’m exhausted.”He dropped the bags in the entryway and called upstairs.“Emma, come help us. Mia’s thirsty, so bring her a glass of water too.”The house remained silent.Emma’s mother frowned.“Wasn’t she supposed to look at apartments today? Why hasn’t she answered any of my messages?”Mia sank onto the couch and spoke in a small voice. “Do you think she’s still mad at me? This is all my fault. I lost Grandma’s bracelet.”Emma’s father patted her shoulder.“Don’t worry about it. She’s always had a mind of her own. She’ll come back once she’s done sulking.”Luke set the shopping bag on the coffee table.Inside was a pearl necklace he had bought in Hawaii. He had assumed that if he gave it to Emma and took her out to dinner, she would forgive him like she always did.She had always been so easy to
