Chapter 3 Even the Flowers Were Hers

Author: Glamor Pig
At 3 p.m., there was a knock on my bedroom door.

It was Mom, with Riley standing behind her.

Mom shoved a rag and a mop into my hands. "Riley's boyfriend will be here in a couple of days. Clean the house properly. Don't let Riley embarrass herself."

I looked up at them. Both of them were dressed beautifully, their faces made up as though they were heading somewhere important.

My grip tightened around the mop.

I raised a hand and pointed at Riley. "What about her? What is she supposed to do?"

Mom frowned, clearly growing impatient. "I'm taking Riley to pick out a couple of outfits. The spotlight will be on her, so she needs to look her best. Stop comparing yourself to your sister. She's different from you."

With that, Mom took Riley's hand and walked away, leaving me no room to object.

However, she seemed to have forgotten that I was the one actually getting married. Compared to Riley, I had more reason to dress up.

But Mom did not seem to care.

…

By the time I finished cleaning, it was already 5 p.m.

Scott came home from work and immediately stepped onto the floor I had just mopped.

He was carrying two bouquets of roses. One had 99 roses, while the other had only nine. He hid the larger bouquet from view.

His footprints trailed across the living room before abruptly stopping at Riley's bedroom door. He turned around and came back to me, holding the bouquet of nine roses. "Here. These are for you. I'm going to surprise Riley, so you have to keep this a secret."

I took the bouquet in my arms. Gradually, my nose began to itch and swell, and my heart tightened little by little.

When Riley was born, Scott and I were in the same position. In that corner of the hospital, we were both forgotten by the entire world.

At the time, Scott reached for my hand.

He saw how lost and helpless I was, and he protected the little bit of hurt I carried in my heart. I had thought that at least I still had Scott in this family. But as Riley grew older and started calling out to Scott, even that last bit of comfort was taken from me.

Scott had said, "She's my sister too. It wouldn't be fair to her."

Yet eventually, I was the only one who was treated unfairly.

From then on, his heart had clearly favored her.

When he saw my eyes turning red, he looked both amused and exasperated. "It's just a flower. Do you really have to get this emotional? Don't tell me your boyfriend managed to win you over with little gestures like this."

I set the flowers down and wiped away the tears gathering in my eyes before explaining, "He's actually never gotten me flowers because he knows I'm allergic to pollen."

Scott's smug look froze instantly.

After a long moment, he apologized, though no trace of guilt crossed his face. "Sorry. I didn't know. I just wanted to make Riley happy. The florist said if I bought 99 roses, they'd throw in nine extra. I didn't know you were allergic."

So, even the roses that made me sick had merely been Riley's leftovers.

I opened my mouth, wanting to tell him that he did know. He had given me flowers at my graduation ceremony, too, and he saw firsthand how miserable my allergies made me that day.

But in the end, all I said was, "It's okay."

It really did not matter now. After all, once I got married, we would only be relatives.

Not family.

With that, I turned and walked away.My hand had barely touched the doorknob when I heard a loud thud behind me. I spun around and saw Mom sprawled on the floor, one hand still stubbornly reaching toward me. "Jenna, please. I'm begging you."She begged with such pitiful, humbling desperation, yet even then, it was still for Riley.I smiled, turned around, and walked straight toward my husband. "I'll pay your medical bills. But anything else, you can forget about it."I had barely stepped out of the hospital when Scott came toward me.It had not even been a year, yet his once-black hair had already turned noticeably gray.He hesitated several times before finally speaking. "You still came…""Yeah. Is this what you wanted me to see? Or do you want me to help Riley, too?"Scott shook his head. "No. I wanted to tell you not to go soft on them."I froze where I stood. Then, I heard his voice beside me. "This past year, while you were gone, I finally realized that the way they love

Life after marriage was remarkably fulfilling.Isaac did not let me sit around doing nothing for even a moment. Every morning, he dragged me to the family company, loudly announcing to everyone that I was his wife. Yet, instead of giving me any special treatment, he placed me at the very bottom and made me work my way up step by step.In the mornings, I attended department meetings with the middle and senior management as a regular administrative clerk. At noon, I went to the technical department to help with odd jobs while familiarizing myself with the product development process. In the evenings, I accompanied Isaac when he met with clients, though he made sure I did not touch a single drop of alcohol throughout the entire evening.Nourished by the love and care of everyone in the Forrest family, I blossomed like a rose, coming into my own with a beauty and radiance I had never known before.Meanwhile, my parents never stopped contacting me.I never blocked them or deleted their

After the call ended, the entire room fell into deathly silence.Dad cursed angrily. "Has she gone mad? How dare she? We're her parents!"With that, he called back. But this time, the call went unanswered. After the long, monotonous ringing, there was still no response.Mom had already gone pale. She nudged Scott. "Jenna adored you the most. She'll definitely answer your call."Scott hurriedly pulled out his phone. He called her again and again, but there was still no answer. My aunt stepped forward as though she wanted to say something, but in the end, she merely let out a long sigh before leaving.Riley stood rooted to the spot, completely at a loss. After the people who had gathered to watch the spectacle finally dispersed, Mom's legs gave out, and she nearly collapsed to the floor. Mom snatched the butler's phone from his hand, her eyes fixed on the wedding photo displayed on the screen. The familiar eyes and brows, the same obediently loose hair falling over her shoulders—everything about the woman in the photograph was unmistakably Jenna, just as Mom remembered her.But the happy smile curving across her lips was something Mom had never seen before.'Jenna really got married to a man none of us have ever even met?'After that argument, on the very day Riley's boyfriend came over, Jenna's husband sent people to their door with gold, gifts, and three million dollars, and immediately shattered all the illusion of happiness they had carefully constructed.Thinking of those three million dollars, Mom felt an inexplicable wave of panic, as though someone incredibly important to her was slowly disappearing. The relatives' enthusiastic congratulations felt like slap after slap across her face. They celebrated and cheered with genuine excitement."Where's Jenna?

Upstairs, Riley stood in front of Mom and Dad with her arm linked through her boyfriend's, her voice bright with excitement. "Mom, Dad, this is my boyfriend, Eli Lowe. He just graduated this year, and he's from Sangoria—not even out of the city!"Mom sized him up.Eli was tall and well-built, with striking, defined features. And he wore a well-tailored suit, which made him look even more polished and distinguished.Mom nodded in satisfaction. Even Dad, whose brows had been tightly furrowed all evening, finally relaxed a little, a pleased expression slowly spreading across his face. Before either of them could say anything, my aunt, who had been invited over, was already praising him. "Lewis, Riley certainly has good taste! Just look at him. A young man like this is more than good enough for our precious girl."Dad beckoned Eli over and gestured for him to sit, though he continued speaking politely. "They're still young. They've only just started dating, so there's no need to talk

Scott shot to his feet and roared, "Are you hearing yourself, Jenna? It was just one meal! What's the big deal? She's our mother!"Dad slammed his palm down on the table. "Enough! You're making a scene over something this trivial and humiliating our family in front of the relatives. Your mother gave birth to you and raised you for all these years, and this is how you repay her, you wretched brat? Besides, Scott bought the watermelon for Riley. You ate it without her permission. That's stealing!"I laughed, so hard that I doubled over. After a long moment, I straightened and looked around the room. The massage chair in the living room—I bought it because Dad's back was bad.The gold jewelry Mom was wearing—I bought it because she cared about appearances and wanted to look the part. The latest computer in Scott's bedroom—I bought it because he was good at gaming. The collection of figurines filling Riley's bedroom—I bought them because she was my sister. And now, after eating not
