Chapter 5 The Price of Their Love

Author: Glamor Pig
Scott shot to his feet and roared, "Are you hearing yourself, Jenna? It was just one meal! What's the big deal? She's our mother!"

Dad slammed his palm down on the table. "Enough! You're making a scene over something this trivial and humiliating our family in front of the relatives. Your mother gave birth to you and raised you for all these years, and this is how you repay her, you wretched brat? Besides, Scott bought the watermelon for Riley. You ate it without her permission. That's stealing!"

I laughed, so hard that I doubled over.

After a long moment, I straightened and looked around the room.

The massage chair in the living room—I bought it because Dad's back was bad.

The gold jewelry Mom was wearing—I bought it because she cared about appearances and wanted to look the part.

The latest computer in Scott's bedroom—I bought it because he was good at gaming.

The collection of figurines filling Riley's bedroom—I bought them because she was my sister.

And now, after eating nothing more than a piece of watermelon, I had become the thief in this family.

I clasped my wrists together and held them out toward them, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "Why don't you call the cops and have me arrested then?"

Mom stared at me with such hatred that she no longer looked at me like a daughter, but an enemy instead.

After a long moment, she finally spoke. "Either throw up the watermelon or pay for it."

Riley tugged at Mom's sleeve.

"Mom, stop fighting with her. I won't eat watermelon anymore." She turned toward me. "Jenna, you should stop arguing too. She's still our mother."

Riley had never been a bad person. She was spoiled, but she was not unreasonable or domineering. However, she had always benefited from everything this family offered, and that was why I hated her.

"Fine. I'll pay!" I pulled out the envelope containing the 693 dollars Mom and Dad had given me and placed it in front of them. "Is this enough?"

"Not enough!" Mom lifted her chin, looking down at me as though I were nothing more than a tiny ant. "We raised you for 27 years. We poured countless hours, effort, and resources into you. Do you really think all of that is worth only 600 dollars? Three million. Pay us three million, and after that, you can do whatever you want. We won't interfere with you anymore!"

The blood in my body immediately froze. My throat felt as though a block of lead had lodged inside it. I could not utter a single word.

Mom stepped forward and stopped in front of me. "Don't have it?"

I stared at her blankly without answering.

She smiled. "In that case, shut up! This family isn't yours to run."

With that, Mom strode away, leaving only one final command behind. "Now, clean up the dishes and the dining table."

Dad, Scott, and Riley followed her out, closing the door behind them with a thud.

I collapsed onto the floor, my face tear-stricken.

Was I wrong? Should I not have eaten that piece of watermelon? Or should I not have talked back to my parents? The truth was, I did not know.

I only knew that my parents' love for me apparently had a price—three million. For the first time, I suddenly felt so valuable. So expensive. Expensive enough that I could never afford the price of their hollow love.

…

Over the next few days, it was as though they had all agreed to punish me on Mom's behalf. They changed the lock on the main door without telling me. There was no food set aside for me at mealtimes. Even the Wi-Fi password was changed.

Fortunately, I was getting married soon.

…

Isaac arrived the day before Labor Day.

I put on the white dress he had bought me and applied a light layer of makeup.

When I left the house, no one asked where I was going or what I was going to do. I did not tell them either. I simply held Isaac's hand tightly and walked with him into the vital records office.

Making the appointment, taking a number, waiting in line, signing the paperwork, getting married—I treated every step with the utmost seriousness. The moment I received our marriage certificate, I cried. Isaac pulled me into his arms and gently comforted me.

I thought I had finally found a family of my own.

When we left, it happened to be Labor Day, and the table was already covered with fruit, desserts, and all the food prepared for dinner.

I walked into the kitchen. "Mom."

She turned around, her voice cold. "Have you realized your mistake?"

I shook my head. "I'm leaving—"

Before I could finish, Riley came rushing into the kitchen and interrupted me. "Mom, my boyfriend is here!"

Mom did not even wait to hear what I was going to say. She turned and left.

I watched as Mom and Dad sat on the couch, putting on the full air of parents meeting their daughter's boyfriend—the kind of treatment I would never get.

I smiled and took nothing with me.

I walked downstairs, got into the car, and drove away.

From now on, when we met again, we would only be relatives.

With that, I turned and walked away.My hand had barely touched the doorknob when I heard a loud thud behind me. I spun around and saw Mom sprawled on the floor, one hand still stubbornly reaching toward me. "Jenna, please. I'm begging you."She begged with such pitiful, humbling desperation, yet even then, it was still for Riley.I smiled, turned around, and walked straight toward my husband. "I'll pay your medical bills. But anything else, you can forget about it."I had barely stepped out of the hospital when Scott came toward me.It had not even been a year, yet his once-black hair had already turned noticeably gray.He hesitated several times before finally speaking. "You still came…""Yeah. Is this what you wanted me to see? Or do you want me to help Riley, too?"Scott shook his head. "No. I wanted to tell you not to go soft on them."I froze where I stood. Then, I heard his voice beside me. "This past year, while you were gone, I finally realized that the way they love

Life after marriage was remarkably fulfilling.Isaac did not let me sit around doing nothing for even a moment. Every morning, he dragged me to the family company, loudly announcing to everyone that I was his wife. Yet, instead of giving me any special treatment, he placed me at the very bottom and made me work my way up step by step.In the mornings, I attended department meetings with the middle and senior management as a regular administrative clerk. At noon, I went to the technical department to help with odd jobs while familiarizing myself with the product development process. In the evenings, I accompanied Isaac when he met with clients, though he made sure I did not touch a single drop of alcohol throughout the entire evening.Nourished by the love and care of everyone in the Forrest family, I blossomed like a rose, coming into my own with a beauty and radiance I had never known before.Meanwhile, my parents never stopped contacting me.I never blocked them or deleted their

After the call ended, the entire room fell into deathly silence.Dad cursed angrily. "Has she gone mad? How dare she? We're her parents!"With that, he called back. But this time, the call went unanswered. After the long, monotonous ringing, there was still no response.Mom had already gone pale. She nudged Scott. "Jenna adored you the most. She'll definitely answer your call."Scott hurriedly pulled out his phone. He called her again and again, but there was still no answer. My aunt stepped forward as though she wanted to say something, but in the end, she merely let out a long sigh before leaving.Riley stood rooted to the spot, completely at a loss. After the people who had gathered to watch the spectacle finally dispersed, Mom's legs gave out, and she nearly collapsed to the floor. She murmured to herself, "Did I drive away my own daughter? How could this have happened?"…After hanging up, Isaac looked at me with undisguised heartache. But he said nothing. He simply pul

Mom snatched the butler's phone from his hand, her eyes fixed on the wedding photo displayed on the screen. The familiar eyes and brows, the same obediently loose hair falling over her shoulders—everything about the woman in the photograph was unmistakably Jenna, just as Mom remembered her.But the happy smile curving across her lips was something Mom had never seen before.'Jenna really got married to a man none of us have ever even met?'After that argument, on the very day Riley's boyfriend came over, Jenna's husband sent people to their door with gold, gifts, and three million dollars, and immediately shattered all the illusion of happiness they had carefully constructed.Thinking of those three million dollars, Mom felt an inexplicable wave of panic, as though someone incredibly important to her was slowly disappearing. The relatives' enthusiastic congratulations felt like slap after slap across her face. They celebrated and cheered with genuine excitement."Where's Jenna?

Upstairs, Riley stood in front of Mom and Dad with her arm linked through her boyfriend's, her voice bright with excitement. "Mom, Dad, this is my boyfriend, Eli Lowe. He just graduated this year, and he's from Sangoria—not even out of the city!"Mom sized him up.Eli was tall and well-built, with striking, defined features. And he wore a well-tailored suit, which made him look even more polished and distinguished.Mom nodded in satisfaction. Even Dad, whose brows had been tightly furrowed all evening, finally relaxed a little, a pleased expression slowly spreading across his face. Before either of them could say anything, my aunt, who had been invited over, was already praising him. "Lewis, Riley certainly has good taste! Just look at him. A young man like this is more than good enough for our precious girl."Dad beckoned Eli over and gestured for him to sit, though he continued speaking politely. "They're still young. They've only just started dating, so there's no need to talk
